He could have been the undisputed goat without a doubt. Imagine players like Diego, Adriano, Dinho or even Neymar with the work ethics of Cristiano or a calm life outside football like Leo. But this is why van Basten, Platini and Baresi are legends, not gods

Very good content DDOF on your doc. Diego's long term cocaine use destroyed his heart and the big increases and decreases of his body weight, also damaged the muscle. At the end he died of a heart attack obviously. He was a tortured genius.There are a number of great players in history, but Maradona was a player who played with the biggest heart and passion. We love you Diego.

I'd love to learn a bit more about the difficulty and the 'extent' of the match fixing in the Italian League when Maradona joined so I can get a better idea of just what sort of achievement getting Napoli to win the League was. Either way, I'm a Messi a guy, but I think it's fair to say maybe Messi is the most talented, most beautiful to watch, but if you're talking about achieving greatness, it's kinda gotta be Maradona. I'd still take Leo over Maradona in a game, but Maradona was just SO much better than everybody else around him that he could achieve things that even Leo, with all his talent, simply can't anymore. From your Average players to the best players they're all significantly better trained, way fitter, and the coaching they receive as well as their understanding of the game, systems, and ability to prepare for different opposition thanks to endless video footage and analytical information just makes it SO hard for individual Geniuses to just carry a team and defeat the opposition at the same time. Nobody is winning a League, World Cup or Champion's League by themselves anymore.

A bit of controversy? Maradona was the epitome of controversy (and that's a euphemism). He spent more time wreaking havoc than playing football, even before he retired. Well, youngsters can choose whom to look for inspiration and how. Football as a sport needed Maradona.

No, we should dirty his legacy. The truth matters. The ‘real’ Maradona is so much more important than the idealised version football fans love to idolise and worship. Yes Maradona was a once in a generation footballer, but that isn’t reason to let slide the fact he was arrogant, entitled and an all-round scumbag off the field. It's a crucial part of his story and legacy. Maybe it’s the historian in me, but Maradona’s crimes and moral failures have to be remembered alongside his footballing triumphs

Maradona was the best of his era. No doubt. But he was a troubled and flawed man who did a lot of bad things. And NOTHING YOU SAY, will ever change that! I am an American and let me tell you something that's going to blow your mind: here in the USA we had even better athlete stars than Maradona (Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Michael Phelps, Carl Lewis) and everyone admits that they were not "Gods" and were very flawed. Stop treating these people and referring to them as if they are greater than anyone ever. They are not! I can easily make the argument that Michael Jordan was more compared to Maradona. Easily. Football is an intense game where the players have to move their bodies nonstop for 45 mins which affects their physical health. Combining the toxicity and passion shared by the fans takes a toll on their mental state and health. Maradona and Ronaldinho are the perfect examples of escaping the physical and mental toll by doing drugs and partying. All I am saying is, that we should not look down on these players, rather we should understand that Football takes a huge toll on the players and they deserve our empathy.
@silvesta5027

To me they represent how NOT to deal with the mental and physical tolls of football. How choosing to drown your problems in drug fuelled partying is universally a terrible idea. It's why players like them no longer exist in football, if you go down that route you simply cannot succeed in the long term. We should look down on them, pity them and learn from their mistakes. It's tragic how they killed their careers, but they did it to themselves. Maradona by every metric was a complete scumbag. Yes I can empathise and feel sorry for him, but it doesn't change his actions. He was self-entitled, lazy, arrogant, drug addicted and a cheater, both in football and in his personal relationships. But it just so happens that this scumbag also was a one in a generation footballer and a titan of the game. We shouldn't idolise people for their talent alone, that's so superficial and shallow. Maradona's legacy is as much about his footballing genius as it is his moral failings

After winning the Scudetto, on a wall of the Poggioreale cemetery, someone wrote: "e non sapete che vi siete persi" meaning: And you don't know what you have lost, reffering to the fact that Naples won Serie A. When Argentina faced Italy, many neapolitans rooted for Argentina just because of Maradona. In short, Maradona was a god in Naples.

@@No-wc6hw Santos in the 60s were arguably the Greatest Team in Football History Cruyff’s Ajax won 3 UCLs in a row Di Stefano’s Real Madrid won 5 UCLs in a row Did these teams benefit from these players? Absolutely yes…but these teams were stacked even without them Napoli had nobody but Maradona, they relied everything on him, same with Argentina

@@vb2388 Santos without Pelè were a mid-table club and Palmeiras (more stacked than santos with Pelé) were more dominant in other tournaments. Maradona had great players alongside him but not a stacked team I agree.

For us Argentines, Messi and Maradona are two sides of the same coin, both are considered gods, and both are extremely different from each other, while Maradona was outspoken, extremely polemic and would always give his opinion on everything (literally everything), Messi is shy, family orientated and will only focus on football, both with an inmense amount of talent and both widely considered the best players of their generation, we can only enjoy both of them and be thankful that if there's a god up there, it always gifts our country with the best players of all time.
