WHAAAT - 2 great videos in the same week! Is there a long weekend around the corner?! LOL. Looking forward to the deep dive on Matter (although I am guessing that might not happen until it is more widely available?). Would be so nice if manufacturers (at least those that have committed compatibility with the standard) would update their products (at least recently released products) with a firmware update - would help with the adoption of the standard. Versus if they make customers angry by expecting them to buy newer versions of the same product. BTW, I hope you are OK I pointed one of your viewers looking for Smart Projectors to Rob's recent video on the topic.

What do you think about Paul's video on why he believes Matter will be another failed standard? It's been a while since I've seen it, but the main takeaway I had was that it doesn't create standards or requirements for devices to actually be compatible with each other.
@SmartHomeSolver
@SmartHomeSolver 2 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I've seen it too but I partially agree with Paul on it. At the time he made the video Apple may or may not have been on board with Matter but if they were, they definitely were not as much as they are now. So I think at the time of Paul making the video it seemed more of a hopeful wish that Matter would happen. Whenever Apple decides to do something adoption rate across the industry goes up for whatever that is (for better or worse on some things). Like I said in the video there are solutions like Zigbee already out there. I remember Paul saying that we don't need another standard because we have OHhh the Zigbee. I agree it feels like we are supposed to buy Thread devices because it's the shiny new thing. But with Matter, all of its benefits it can justify the need for change in my opinion. I didn't mention it in the video but I spent some time on the Matter github project looking at all the progress and it's pretty cool to check out. Seems like developers from Apple and Amazon are working on it which is pretty sweet. Collaboration like that is not easy.

Truth is you will NEVER get Apple, Google, AND Amazon to all agree to something that has blanket requirements. It should still vastly improve the landscape and if you are like me using Homekit and Home Assistant then you are already operating locally anyway which is the biggest thing.
@espressomatic

It won't be possible to make Matter devices that "don't work with each other," regardless of how you interpret the spec. I'm a fan of Paul's but he's either being goofy here or just didn't look into it enough. As long as your automation platform has the required radios and can talk to all the devices, everything is a green light. And every major platform is going to support it (Apple, Amazon, Google, Home Assistant). What one shouldn't lose sight over however is that not everything will be Matter, including Philips Hue - that is, their bulbs are supposed to continue with Zigbee (instead of moving to Thread) and their HUB will support Matter/Thread. You can think of Thread as pretty much an IP-based Zigbee and Matter will run on top of that - but it can also run on top of WiFi. And while Matter can work locally (hey, so does plain IP over WiFi), you'd better believe that some companies will still have cloud-connected services tied to their devices (Ecobee, Nest, etc..) The two main benefits are what was mentioned early in the video. Works with all home automation platforms: don't need to shop around for that special version for your platform. Easy to add to your platform: scan a code. The other benefits already exist with other products: local mesh, low-power. You shouldn't replace any of your existing devices if they're working well for you. If I had any, the only things I'd get rid of are cloud-only devices like Tuya, etc. And that really has nothing to do with Matter coming later in the year.

Thread advantage: much faster/lower overhead networking in comparison to Zigbee, also not congesting your wifi. Matter advantage: universal enrollment, CASE sessions (sessions resuming), less power usage for lowpower devices [batteries could last a lot longer], IPv6 based, mDNS, multipath BorderRouters internet connections, universal casting. Events are similar to Zigbee: Custom and Cluster. Matter over thread is much more advance than Zigbee, +added [hopefully universal] casting protocol.

What ive seen, your first 3 points you listed only is a thing if the devices are running thread. And people confuse thread for matter to much. For most people I think thread won't be a part of their smarthome as they already use another standard as zwave, ZigBee or similar. As those only talk through the hub and already support homekit or whatever, matter don't really add anything. Philips had already shown signs that they will continue to work in their existing ZigBee ecosystem, so we will not see an abandonment which would have been worse. So we now have 3 big smarthome low power ecosystems. Can matter simplify acces to and through Alexa, ha homekit etc? Maybe and that is where I think matter may have its core feature for most people. Then maybe they add cameras etc in the future, sat 10 years in this speed they might get easier to integrate. But we already seen companies in old industry like Samsung create their own for washing machines and similar so before it's released we are looking at a fragmenting market. Although AC units and washing machines did not integrate good in the first place so win for those devices....maybe.

In my opinion, it's pointless to wait for something that no one knows when will be released specially if there's no secure reason to believe the utopia Matter proposes, when Matter itself is composed by the same companies that were into Zigbee Alliance and they used to promise basically the same thing. Furthermore, as stated in the video, even if it does come out and it is what everyone expects it to be, your "old" smart home products will still work just the same, so you might as well start now.

The membership and certifications costs are going to sink this standard. The number of products produced are going to be small... Small vendors will not be able to afford thousands of dollars per year and the number of products will be so thin that there will be obvious holes in the types of products offered. The number of competing products will be small and more expensive. It will be awesome if Matter is actually implented the way it is designed. Unfortunately what I have read so far is that it is going to be a bit like Zigbee and allow manufacturers to only partially implement it, or allow propietary functions.... I hope I am wrong there, as that is what hobbled ZigBee up until 3.0, and even Zigbee 3.0 is not 100% guaranteed. I am even more cautious given all the companies in the Matter bed are the same ones that were in the ZigBee alliance, and made the same promises when Zigbee was released. As I said, hope I am wrong

@@espressomatic Sounds good in theory, but even on Zigbee 3.0, proprietary functionality is still allowed and there is already talk of a Matter v1 that will not have all the implementations of Matter v2 and nothing has even been officially released yet. Sorry, but i don't quite agree. None of the big companies involved want a single hub to control everything. Yeah, it might make things easier but Apple, Google, Philips, Amazon will still want to sell you their hubs, probably at a premium since it's new and shiny (and you'll be their unpaid tester)
