Matthaus parents were not from poland, his parents were from silesia which is current day poland however when they fled it was germany. Stalin changed the physical border of germany and poland. The name matthaus is certainly not polish and i doubt the player has any connections to poland

More than pressing the like button, this video made me a subscriber! I was still a child, younger than 10 the first time I saw Lothar Matthaus play, he's one of the reasons why even though I'm not German at all, I have always rooted for Germany in every single world cup since 1986. Sad his personal life overshadowed his greatness. He's an unforgettable footballer, a living legend.

I don't care about Messi, Ronaldo, Benzema, Lewandowski etc...for me Matthäus will always remain the best player. Then the 94 World Cup came and Baggio is the reason I started watching football. Then by chance going through a video of the 1990 World Cup, there he was, Mattheus showcasing his brilliance, he's the reason I became a midfielder and would watch his videos over. I think that one of the things that defined Matthäus in his prime and that gets barely touched on in this video is how he made everyone around him better. There was a clear difference between Bayern or the national team with him on the pitch vs. with him off the pitch, and I think that more than anything else, that makes him one of the all-time goats. He was, albeit a completely different type of player, the Xavi of his generation.

Matthäus wasn’t particularly liked as he felt he was his generation’s Beckenbauer and resented that he didn’t get the respect and admiration he thought he deserved. He also held his face into every camera, and presented one trophy wife after another, all of whom left him after extracting generous divorce settlements. Then Matthäus became a coach but no league 1 team wanted to hire him, which reinforced his sense of being disrespected. Things have turned around only in the past 10 years or so. Today Matthäus is a well respected and liked TV commentator and pundit. He finally has found a role that goes well with him, and age seems to made him wiser, calmer, more humble. He doesn’t take himself that seriously any more.

Unlike many others, Matthäus didn't need the perfect setup with other players to boost a team. He was able to play on virtually any position making him one of the most complete players I ever saw. With his physical strength, speed, precision, control, and leadership ability he was definitely on the top in his prime. It is the fate of players in a German team that they can't establish themselves as individual artists. For this, they have to move to Italian or Spanish teams.

11:51 Correction: Klinsmann DID win the World Cup alongside Matthäus in 1990. He even was responsible for getting the penalty! Edit: Ahh okay, you meant not as a captain... Edit: indeed it was Völler, thanks for correcting me!

OLDFAG HERE BUT, WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE! 80's-90's and early 2k's was for me the absolutely GOLDEN AGE of Football. I remember how we enjoyed of Football....the increidible collection of XL shirts (not Slim like now) I had of the good old teams, Maradona's Careca's and Zola's Napoli, Internazionale de Milano with Matthaus, Milano with the best team ever with Maldini, Baressi, Gullit, Rikjard, Van Basten (AND MORE) Sampdoria with Vialli, Vierchowood, Mancini, Pagliucca, Lombardo, Manchester United with Neville, Irwin, Roy Kean, Scholes, Vince, Huges, Schmeichel, CANTONA. Southampton with Sir Mathew Letissier, Madrid Galacticos with Casillas, Zidane, Hierro, Beckham, Raul , Figo Ronaldo, Quinta del Buitre with Michel, Hugo Sánchez, Pardeza, Emilio Butragueño, Miguel, Sanchís, Martín Vázquez and then my Team Dream Team FC Barcelona with Zubizarreta, Koeman, Guardiola, Laudrup, Stoickkov....

Matthaus was underrated. People don’t give him credit. For me one of the greatest players of all time. Also when he won titles at Bayern. Bayern weren’t the dominant team in Germany as they are today. Plus inter winning the league title when napoli and AC were the dominant teams.
