I think that one of the things that defined Matthäus in his prime and that gets barely touched on in this video is how he made everyone around him better. There was a clear difference between Bayern or the national team with him on the pitch vs. with him off the pitch, and I think that more than anything else, that makes him one of the all-time goats. He was, albeit a completely different type of player, the Xavi of his generation.
@oleolsonn1002 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right, because he was a leader, the driver, the role model on the pitch for his teammates. Yes, that's right, he was way ahead of his time.
@henrykaspar3634 Жыл бұрын
Matthäus wasn’t particularly liked as he felt he was his generation’s Beckenbauer and resented that he didn’t get the respect and admiration he thought he deserved. He also held his face into every camera, and presented one trophy wife after another, all of whom left him after extracting generous divorce settlements. Then Matthäus became a coach but no league 1 team wanted to hire him, which reinforced his sense of being disrespected. Things have turned around only in the past 10 years or so. Today Matthäus is a well respected and liked TV commentator and pundit. He finally has found a role that goes well with him, and age seems to made him wiser, calmer, more humble. He doesn’t take himself that seriously any more.

With his physical strength, speed, precision, control, and leadership ability he was definitely on the top in his prime. It is the fate of players in a German team that they can't establish themselves as individual artists. For this, they have to move to Italian or Spanish teams.

If we have a time machine to bring back players at their prime, Matthaus and Rijkaard will be my first 2 choices for the CDM positions in my team.

Matthaus was underrated. People don’t give him credit. For me one of the greatest players of all time. Also when he won titles at Bayern. Bayern weren’t the dominant team in Germany as they are today. Plus inter winning the league title when napoli and AC were the dominant teams.
