There was a deeply partisan press in the early days of our Republic. This talk brings up the question: how did the Founders expect the voters to wade through the lying and propaganda leading up to campaigns?
@soapbxprod5 жыл бұрын
IMHO, they didn't? Which is why they tried to create an extremely limited Federal government... at least most of them gave it their best effort... well maybe not Hamilton and Adams?
@Galgus20005 жыл бұрын
soapbxprod The Anti-Federalists were the true champions of limited government and Federalism: the Federalists wanted the Constitution to create a more centralized government, though it has grown beyond what most of them would have dreamed of.
@erichill86745 жыл бұрын
At the time the only people who voted were "approved". States were allowed to impose literacy tests, poll taxes etc., Effectively blocking a large portion of the electorate. Even though a lot of those barriers are gone today, it was never in the scope of the Constitution. Free speech has pretty much carried us by the persuasiveness of arguments. Mass media has changed this, because it is essentially now "free" to send broadcast messages and any idiot can do it. So the truth is essentially drowned out in speech, or made so simple as to lose its subtlety.

There's a shorter term for "engineering consent": seduction
@thegeneralstrike67475 жыл бұрын
Desire. Desire cannot be satisfied. Seduction only accounts for the getting. If I am seduced at some point the glow may wear off. Desire creates a seemingly self induced need that cannot be satisfied. Perhaps seduction brings you in but, it is desire that perpetuates a false need that can never be satisfied.

How can libertarians do these techniques, or others like them, to "manufacture consent" for liberty, the NAP, and even "anarcho-capitalism"? Can these techniques be employed to advance a private-property, sound money, and peaceful economy and society, as opposed to the war, destruction, and poverty which are inevitable with statism, including "democracy"? Food for thought!

@@bluespiral4678 Perhaps, but please apply the same standards to both (opposite) systems of social organization. Humanity is clearly not evolved enough mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to live in societies run by monopolistic institutions maintaining their power and privilege through force and fraud either. Every human community (for at least six thousand years) around the world with such institutions ("governments") has always been bitterly impoverished, brutalized, and terrorized, with the extent of such savagery often directly related to, and a function of, the intrusions of the dominant government itself. How is "Democracy" a hard term to define? it's a hard term to live up to, which is why America is not all out democracy and shouldn't be. Is forcing every citizen to vote democracy? Maybe, but if you have to chase people down to get them to vote, don't we think that would pollute the results somewhat considering how many people who apparently don't care about who's president would be made to vote. Yes we should all be better informed, yes we should all make the effort--as long as we have that option and people aren't preventing us, i don't see the fact that many people don't vote as an issue. It's probably for the best if many of them know very little about the process or perhaps do but don't care to vote for whatever reason. 22% of people voting in a country isn't that bad when you consider how many kids, recent immigrants, felons, retarded people/alzheimer's patients, anarchists, lazy and/or dumb people there are.

What difference does it make if some people were ineligible to vote? Those who were ineligible clearly did not (and could not) give their consent to be governed in any way. If only 25% of population were eligible to vote and 100% of those had voted for Reagan, Mr Deist's point would still be just as valid that he was elected by only 25% of the population. How does restricting the number of people who can vote increase the legitimacy of a so-called Democracy?
