They want to build something more of an ecosystem rather than a type of console per se. They are trying to focus on making games playable on an Xbox brand rather than an Xbox console, meaning they'll still focus on Xbox Play Anywhere, game pass services and so on. They don't want people to focus on the console's power, even though they are making one of the most powerful consoles ever. I hope that helped.

I mean come on, their almost decade long dry season of games, the same contrived sequels and smoke blown up the arse of the very same drawn-out games, with more care and consideration put into porting older games and bringing out another exclusive controller, that in total vastly outnumber the amount of games having resources poured into them instead. It wasnt enough that the one x barely made a sales difference, but the hardware wouldn't have mattered nearly as much if there were games justifying the system. Then, I think, people would have look passed the fact the OG XBone looked like a cross between a VHS and grill, and still had an external power supply.

This makes me think about how far the Xbox One has come this generation. It's just amazing how fast technology is growing and how great the games are playing and looking. Microsoft learned a lot from the first Xbox One. And I have to admit they did make a all in one console for both the casual gamer Xbox One S and the core gamer the Xbox One X which is a beast of a machine and is my console of choice. Me personally as good as games look on the One X I can wait longer for the next generation to come out.

Microsoft focusing on the xbox being an entertainment system theoretically makes sense to me because in general if you want the best gaming experiance you would play on pc for the best graphics/frames/storage etc. But if you like to casually play games for a more affordable consol price with the convience of being able to watch a show on 4k television after, the xbox more suits that niche. imo

@WD Fourty Not exactly. Sure, they don't have as many quality exclusives as Sony but they have other distinguishing features that make them stand out. The 360 had a far superior online infastracture than the PS3 and ports tended to look and perform better than on the PS3 due to MS having a better SDK which made porting much easier. Granted, exclusive PS3 games were better able to take advantage of the hardware and one could argue PS3 exclusives had better fidelity than 360 exclusives. In the case of the One, multiplats tend to look and run much better at higher resolutions, even sometimes native 4k. Plus, the Elite is pretty much the best gaming controller on the market. The 4k Blu-ray and video passthrough doesn't hurt either. Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3 and PS4. They are fantastic systems with truly great exclusives. But let's not act like the 360 and One don't have anything to offer.

The problem with Xbox making big budget single player story driven exclusive games like Sony is the fact that they have to make them available day one on game pass.. They just don't have a big enough incentive to do so because where Sony can make $60 per copy of God of war, through programs like gamepass Microsoft makes $10 subscription fee for someone who will play their latest exclusive single player game, finish the story, unsubscribe and wait for the next big release and repeat.. This is why Xbox is more focused on AA games with multiplayer and replayability value so people can subscribe to gamepass for longer durations.. This in my opinion is why I'm not optimistic on Xbox matching Sony on the quality of AAA exclusive games any time soon unless they change their gamepass terms..

The games of Xbox this generation just did not overwhelm me in any way. Only Forza Horizon is a franchise I would like to play. If Microsoft focuses on creating more single player games, they might have a chance.

If you asked me, I’d agree that Xbox has been heading down the path of focusing on the whole spectrum of entertainment vs solely being there as a gaming platform. I’ve owned every Xbox up til now, and every PlayStation, and I hate to say it but it appears that the Xbox one very well may be my final Xbox. It’s not a terrible console, but these last 18 months have been excruciating for someone who sold off ALL PlayStation equipment these last few years in order to focus on Xbox and the Nintendo Switch, only to immediately regret doing so. There have been hordes of massive A+ 1st party developments from Sony since doing so, and I’ve been feeling the pain all along. Ironic, I believed Xbox to be the better option for long term has bit me in the ass. Sold off every bit of my Sony equipment that I had, dating back to my days of huddled in front of my 13” CRT TV playing crash bandicoot, resident evil, and metal gear solid and more before there ever was an Xbox, and come next generation of gaming consoles I’ll be making a full loop back to Sony. I’ve been slowly figuring out that, as you have pointed out in your video, if you want to play video games and be open to more exclusive titles then PlayStation will be for you. If you’re looking for overall entertainment that features the ABILITY to play games, then the Xbox will be there for those folks. Too bland anymore for my liking and not focused on what I own a gaming console for, gaming. Great video!

Very well said! One of the other bad signs is, if they do not dedicate themselves to a game console, they also don't have the responsibilty to keep good new games coming. In my opinion they are opening the door too soon for mediocre products that can be played on any device anywhere. Wich in the end will be a loss for all gamers, no matter wich platform. Except the casual mobile players who will be the cashcows as always. Xbox, PS or PC, I serious hope the "competition" between platforms will keep them all pushing eachother to higher quality in the next generation.

Good morning Gameranx: I like to hear what your position on Backward compatibility, I've been lucky enough to have all the version of XBox and PS consoles. I very rarely trade in games with the thought I will revisit/replay them at some point. So why hasn't Sony/Microsoft figured out that all their game console release should be backward giving us the opportunity to play any game from the previous console. I do realize that part of this is a profit issue. However for has many console as both companies sell with each new upgrade, give us a little brake, the price on these game of 40,50 and 60 a pop with decrease value in a very shortly after release. A little free backward compatibility would hurt the industry at all. . Just a thought. Looking to hear you response. Thank for making these great review. v/r KnightShadow.

Microsoft has been on the right path for a few years now. I bought PS4 first and then a few years later got the Xbox One S. Fast forward to now and my PS4 collects dust unless an exclusive I like catches my eye. Game Pass and Backwards compatibility are amazing and provide so much extra value to the system. Plus the interface runs much smoother.

Ok, I work in the Cable industry and can the whole idea of being able to watch regular TV on the XBox is real. The convergence of the traditional cable box and a gaming console is an evolution of services into one platform can be evidenced by just looking at where tech was 10 years ago and where it will be going to in the next 5 years.
