I get the impression that there is some type of index, but that noSQL databases, including MongoDB are very fast at writing data and comparatively slow at searching for it, and building things like joins across tables.

Oracle also supports unstructured Data in JSON or XML format. You can mix both models in the same DB.

Few things to keep in mind regarding your explanation, parts of the structural flexibilities such as nested document, array of items, etc. come from JSON as data format, this not a MongoDB specific or provided feature, any NOSQL document centric data store will provide this flexibility.
