These videos are some of the clearest, most concise explanations of a topic that 'music' professors LOVE to complicate for no reason except their own egos. Finally, explanations for the common folk, without mention of Dorian mode double flat G sharp aggravated chords and their uses at the zoo. REAL educators don't have to complicate things, THANKS ! P.S., I have studied with some music geniuses, including Hugo Montenegro's first music teacher, who was my father.

Nice demonstration of the principles of your excellent article. I have since noticed two more examples: one is Desplat's score for Philomena. The motif for the protagonist's long lost son is a text book example of the loss gesture. Then I heard "The Unanswered Question" by Charles Ives, which was used in The Thin Red Line in 1998. That starts with another textbook M4m, although it's not clear that "loss" was the intended result of the composer in 1906... bloody beautiful and sad whatever he intended, though!

Hahahahaha. For some reason, my 'next' playlist put this video in line so I watched it while having breakfast. I didn't recognise a single one of the movie themes. This means that I have to quit composing and recording for the next 6 months and watch much more tv and films 😀 Seriously, you have a great way of teaching which isn't unnecessarily complicated. You're also funny and, it seems, a thoroughly nice man 🙂

Any chance you could or would say something about, or demonstrate some of the "tricks" that the "minimalists" use? Or maybe recomend videos or text about this subject matter? As I am an old visual artist who got into music late in life, I know nothing about music theory, but I love your comprehensible lectures, and especially this about "sad" film music. I have however learned to read notations well enough to memorise and enjoy playing some of Philip Glass's pieces. Metamorphosis one-five, and Morning Passages. I have not played piano for a while as I have been preoccupied with trying to understand the basic of synthesis, where videoes by Dean Friedman from The New York School of Syntheses has been my main source for this. But after these remarkable and impressive videos of yours I'm back to "basic".

what is the name of the song you played at the start of the video?
@ScottMurphyIdeasAboutMusic
@ScottMurphyIdeasAboutMusic 8 жыл бұрын
It's not one particular song with one composer, but a cadential archetype from Hollywood's "Golden Age" that several composers used to various degrees. You can see a notated form of this "Hollywood cadence" and read more about it here: www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.13.19.4/mto.13.19.4.lehman.html#FN5REF

If you’re feeling like you haven’t progressed in the past year or so.. just watch the first 6 minutes. It’ll definitely remind you of where you first started learning to play. Not downplaying people who just started learning or anything. Also, this guy put so much effort into explaining his points and the positions of your fingers, you really have to give him props for it.

Ive recently did a film score to a feature released last year on VOD in the US.... (amoungst many other shorts etc) Never was a theory guy.... Does that mean im not a Muso??? Maybe a non muso that wrote??? , always just listened to what i played all in context i guess... I just discovered your channel and I know it maybe simple for some, but at school I always got the answer, though went a long way around to get it.... Just like all theory teachers.... The smallest of things they never explained, you have... Just like guitar, its about shapes, though different... Brilliant! Mate, Id buy you a beer.
