Drinking in Australia, particularly at an Asian house party, every man that comes must bring a box (not a 6-pack) of beer EACH, anything less and you're a cheapskate/unsociable. Even if you're not good with booze, as long as you bring a box and have at least 1 bottle, no one will complain as you paid your fair share and the booze you don't drink goes to them. Normally, the booze leftover from the party mainly goes to the people who have to clean up after the party.

I like the drinking culture in Europe and the UK. Where I'm from, you are either an irresponsible college student who drinks until throwing up and getting wasted, or you're an adult who has enough after just one glass of wine, or one beer. There is not in-between. When I lived in Spain it was great how everyone, both young and older people, would hang out with friends or acquaintances and have a fair amount of alcohol without anyone blinking and eye.

I'd say it depends from person to person. Usually when the alcohol actually brings potential negative consequences with it beyond a slight headache in the morning (e.g. falling asleep on train tracks, drunk driving or comparably irresponsible and brainless behavior) or when it's consumed too regularly. Coming from a country where you can buy alcohol in universities and while working in some factories, with millions of confirmed alcoholics, I'd hope our drinking culture changes for the better at some point in the future. But it won't since alcohol isn't even seen as potentially harmful or a drug in the eyes of many, even though tens of thousands of people die from it here every year.

At least in my friend groups, it is common for everyone to buy their own stuff when we party or go on trips that will involve heavy drinking. Generally each person will bring about 50% more than they expect to drink and we'll all share. So, I'd get like a bottle of liquor/wine with a 6 pack of hard ciders expecting to give away a couple ciders and glasses of liquor/wine. We never did combining together for a couple of racks(30 packs) of beers like TrashTaste was talking about.

funny/tragic drinking story: once at my folk high school, (it is a Danish thing, look it up if you wanna know more) Three of the guys have bought and box wine each, and they decided to see which of them could drink theirs first. I think they started drinking at around noon, and the goal was to be done with their box wine before four o clock. only one of them managed to finish his box wine, and we were all impressed, now the other to lads had decided that they would not drink anymore that evening. but not the third guy, the one who had finished his box wine, he decided that it would be a great idea to start drinking beer. he ended puking a turrent of red over the public toilet, and I think an ambulance was called.

Burger man here. I don’t drink very much (maybe a beer or two a month, if that). BUT Memorial Day weekend (last weekend of May), there’s a camping/canoe trip I go on with some friends and family. We rarely go with liquor, but it’s guaranteed we’ll grab a 30-rack of some cheap beer (for sharing among the party), and most people will grab a 6-12 pack of their favorite craft brews. We’re lucky if that holds through noon on the second day. We usually stop off at a store that sits on the halfway point of our route and stock up. For myself, it’s a 6-pack or two of craft beer, plus 6-10 of the cheap ones to last me the trip. I’m by far the lightweight of the crew 😂 Grand times!

To be fair “I could go for A beer” in america means “I am craving a singular beer”. If you want to say “I’d like to get several beers” just say “I could go for a couple/a few beers”. Also, in general Americans assume that drinking the amount of beer THEY are comfortable with is too much to drink around other people you’re just meeting for the first time. On average, we under-drink to be polite. Also, we clearly have a very different relationship with alcohol, the average amount of alcohol people from Australia and Britain are comfortable with begins to crest into an american’s idea of “that person is an alcoholic”. Honestly the saddest part is that plenty of Americans can drink Aussies and Brits under the table, but we do it alone and sad in the privacy of our homes….
