This makes me long to get a tortoise for a pet. I remember in grade 9 my science teacher had a bunch of reptiles, and it was my job to feed the tortoises. It was fun watching them eat, especially when I'd set the lettuce just outside their tank to get the top off, and they were already trying to eat through the glass. The things keeping me from getting one is I don't have the space or resources to make sure they have a proper set up that meets their needs. Tortoises are also a very long term commitment, they'll probably outlive me and there's no one I trust to will my pets to.

Some add calcium dust or a multi vitamin dust to the greens, that helps pyramiding as well, right?

My 5yr old daughter’s hermannes tortoise is 2 over the few weeks … my daughter turns 6 …. We named him Herman so my daughter would never forget what type of tortoise he is lol …. He is such a friendly lovely little fella who has taught me a lot about tortoises and their way of living aswell as their needs , he is literally part of our family now and we love him dearly

As a kid in the 60's I had a male & female tortoise. She laid several nests of eggs, but none hatched until she laid a double batch of 23 eggs --- ALL hatched and survived. We moved from California to Ohio & gave our brood to a family who already had several tortoises. My female bred with a vengeance with about 8-12 eggs per year. Eventually several dozen tortoises of all sizes were given to an organization who releases them into specific desert locations. Tortoises do love lettuce. Mom would get giant bags of free lettuce trimmings from the grocery store produce department. They also love bread soaked in milk that provides additional calcium needed fore bone,shell and egg development. My Mom met a professor named Sobol who was the foremost authority at the time on tortoises and we learned a lot about them. Tortoises can dig like gophers and easily escape any yard not having cement blocks or bricks buried under the gate. They poop like dairy cattle ...

1. This tortoise is super cute. It reminds me of ours when she was little (Ours is 16 now and weighs about 50lbs) 2. I was studying these in my College Herpetology class and I realized these cute little guys are threatened or endangered rn. I’d research before getting one. They’re a lot of work and they don’t stay little forever. They also live a long time and usually out live their owners. Here in az they require a home inspection and a will drawn and legalized on who will care for the tortoise should you pass before they do. They get so many surrenders here because people don’t understand the level of care they require or how big they actually get. They’re a cool animal for sure but need care.
