📌 What's your daily average spending while on tour?
@erikl.18604 жыл бұрын
in August 2019: 20 days Solo tour in Belgium/France/Netherlands (Maasroute - EuroVelo 19): average 26.5 €/day 60% for food/drinks (a few times restaurant, mostly food from grocery stores and bakery) 34% for sleeping (16 nights on camping and 4 nights wild camping) 3.6% for transport: ferries in The Netherlands

We are currently saving up for the next 3 years to go tour for 3-5 years but as we save and slave away at work, we are just considering saving a massive cushion around 50,000, and working occasionally throughout our travels in order to just... live nomadically, perhaps. All I know is that niether of us can stand living somewhere we can never truly own or lay down permanent roots and when we tour we feel happy about our place in the universe. : ) this time we will be going with a different kind of setup- electric bosch bikes with a lot of storage so we can have the comforts we've been missing on tour like camp chairs and a tent we can stand in, laptops and clothing for every type of weather. Not sure we will ever stop once we start, honestly.

My biggest expense was food, I could just not eat enough. Foodies should bike tour, everything tastes better when you starving. I was out a year and only paid for accommodations twice. I stayed at warmshowers/couch surfing, fire stations, hospital parking lots, red crosses, schools, police stations, members from my church, park/bus benches, and I wild camped a few times, not that much though. Fire Stations was probably the best stays, just pull up to the fire station and see if you can pitch your tent there. They usually say yes and it is safe because they are always there. Police Stations are the same but the night shift is really really nice, letting you use the bathroom and kitchen but man the day shift hates you and won't even let you enter the building. It happened on multiple occasions in multiple countries.

Thank you so much for sharing! Worries about costs are one of the biggest things stopping me from jumping in. I really appreciate people who are willing to share the full details like this, it's one of the most helpful things you can do! I would love a video on some of the big unknowns that people are afraid about going in. How do you figure out the quality of the roads before you ride? How do you determine which roads will feel safe or not? How do you go to the doctor in a foreign country? How do you ensure that you don't miss out on big events in these places? How do you communicate in a place where you don't speak the language? Were wild animals ever an issue? These (and more) are all very uncertain and frankly frightening things I've been thinking about and I think they would make a good topic for a video.

Hi James, you're welcome! I'm so glad you found it helpful. And these are all GREAT questions and you are definitely not alone in asking them. Would love to answer them and more in future videos. Thanks for the input!
@buckettraveler83984 жыл бұрын
I had the same questions. Just start up on a small tour and learn the basics. The most important thing you'll learn is you will never know ever everything and to just go for it. If language is a worry realize that 99.9% of doctors speak English but you should do a few short tours in a country that uses you native language. Seriously though, I was really nervous about my tour through every mainland country from the US to Panama but if you want to do it just do it. When you are on your tour worries seem to melt away.

We loved this video! Thanks for sharing. We track our spending always. It is great data to have and really helps in being planful. We are about to take a two week cycling trip in Taiwan (where we are currently Ex-Pats) but during our trip Brently will continue to work! His company has gone to a work from home situation given this global pandemic. Thankfully, we are safe from the virus in Taiwan so are able to travel the country freely. We will track our spending and have set a hotel budget of $60usd per night - that's high for cycle touring, we know, but remember, Brently does have to work each night so we need some comfort!

Really great presentation, really gives a good perspective on what a long distance cycling trip will cost. Me & Julie just finished our ride across America, (Key West, Florida to San Diego, California). We followed the Southern Tier route most of the way, we took 8 weeks to cover the 2815 miles. We camped out a lot on this trip, but did stay in motels at least twice a week. Because of the Covid-19 scamdemic, the warm showers/ couch surfing program was shut down. We ate out often on this trip mainly to get a hot meal at dinner time, during our daily rides we would snack on fruits, energy bars, cold pizza, and energy drinks and a lot of water. We did a lot of prep work on our bikes to insure limited mechanical issues. Because of the touring tires, tubes, liners, and rims we were using on this trip, we had zero flat tires and very little tire wear. The Surely Long Haul Truckers performed flawlessly on this trip mainly because we packed very lightly. The total cost of this adventure including shipping our bikes and gear back to Florida after we completed the ride, plus airline travel back to Florida was $7288.22.....

Very useful and well done, all in I am at the €50 per day end, weather is a determinant I find for decisions on camping vs hotel/B&B. These costs are for Europe.
@radbikeadventure4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Tony. Yes, it really depends on what kind of travel you prefer (and what you're willing to put up with lol!). As you can see we like a bit of roughin' it and a bit of comfort. No shame in taking a hotel or b&b when the weather is crap! Plus it's nice to support local businesses along the way. I really should have mentioned that!

Great video, thanks for the info! Do you mind me asking what you guys do for health insurance while touring?
@radbikeadventure4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this question Jessica! I actually meant to mention health insurance. I think I'll do another video about this too because it's a common question. We had World Nomads Insurance (though not for the entire trip (tho we probably should have 😬) trusting we'd stay safe and healthy. Did lots of research and talked to plenty of travelers (from previous trips) and a couple of friends who recommend them and had good experiences to report. Nomads are unique because they cover many adventure activities that most insurance companies won't cover so that was definitely a major reason we chose it! It costs about $3-4/day per person (we are in our 30s) which seems very reasonable. Thankfully we never had to use it.
@radbikeadventure4 жыл бұрын
We also plan to use them for any other trips we take overseas (now older and wiser to always get insurance!): Here is a link to the World Nomads page through our affiliate link: bit.ly/2Wcl22e

You guys are just too cute together. Congrats on finding each other! My around-the-world starts May '22. So these videos are great and are helping me realize bike-touring will be way less expensive than I thought! Plus, well, it's only me! And I totally agree with being unable to resist hitting the DQs along the way. So I'll have to add that in. :D Don't drink so that expense is right out! Suggestions for phone is one of the sketchiest I've run into so far. I refuse to do A[radio edit]e, so still researching Android phones. Great informative video! You guys rock! Stay safe!

My budget per week of vacation (the being honest version) Three movies, pizza, popcorn, soda = $105 4 hotels (I swear next week I will camp more!) = $260 6 restaurant stops (looooooves my liver and onions!) $360 2 stupid “tourist trinkets” $100 1 trip to a local doctor, don’t know why, it just happens. $30 deductible $120 out of network 1 payment to a bum with a paper sign. This only happens on vacation and I don’t know why?? $20 Normal stuff like food, camping, pay offs to the biker gang I flipped off, so I don’t get my butt kicked. $500 So that makes..?. About $1,450 per week? Am I in budget?

My hang-up about touring is I don't like to camp but hotels are just too expensive I wonder if you could book bed and breakfast or pre-booked Airbnb and it would be economical??
@radbikeadventure4 жыл бұрын
Probably a bit cheaper yes! You may just have to take shorter trips (unless you have plenty of $$) if you're not into camping but there are plenty of cyclists who tour this way. Every tour will look different and maybe yours is 7 days with nicer accommodation! This is also where the Warmshowers network could come in to help. It's a fantastic way to meet other cyclists and have a cultural exchange. Try hosting first and see how you like it : )

Hello, I love to watched all your videos, and some I repeated watching. Its inspired me to cycle one day around the world. Good videos, very nice adventure. Yes, you are travelling with a good budget daily. How much you earned from donation ( patreon, paypall etc ) ? can it cover at least 50% of your daily expenses ? I am preparing to cycle in europe using eurovelo routes. I hope you will keep cycle and waiting to watch your new adventure. I am in Granada Spain, maybe in future we can meet to exchange knowledge.
