I own a 2016 GTI, just spent $1000 US dollars to replace the water pump and thermostat @ a VW dealership. I love the car but that was a tough one to swallow. Glad I’m not the only one to run into this problem. Cmon VW…plastic?!

Hi mate love the videos and keep up the good work. I am an hgv mechanic and have been for 12 years. I’ve also had my fair share of vw Mk5 golfs. Now in my experience if there was a blockage to the heater matrix there would be no circulation and there would be no heat Going into the cab at all. Also there is a flow and return going to and from the matrix. If 1 is hot and 1 is cold the blockage is in the matrix, If both are hot then I would suggest checking the thermal sensor for the vent that is cold. As this sends temp reading back to the heater Control unit. You can access through side of dash. It will be reading sky high and telling control unit to cool down. You can check this With a multi meter and measure resistance by using a a hair dryer. The resistance should fall as it gets warmer. That bag would not make it through the rad if it was burst I would think. Hope this helps bro

Thanks for the great video. I have a 2015 GTI Mk7 and had the water pump/thermostat housing done last week after a slow coolant leak for months. I also have the heater issue. It (sort of) works if you keep it on the hottest setting. I think that the heater code is clogging and will change it out myself in the Spring as I am off warranty for that. Luckily, it is easy to get to....no need to remove entire cash ( only a kick panel). This appears to be a common issue with the Passat/Jetta, too. In the US, there is a warranty extension for certain Passats but not the Mk7 Golf....yet.

My MK7.5 Golf R started to have a coolant smell around 14,000 miles. At 17,000 I discovered it was the water pump leaking. Do you know if the MK7.5 also has a plastic pump?

I had the water pump issue as well. Fortunately VW covered the cost under warranty.

What year is yours? Mine (2017) is still under warranty at 27000 miles and getting replaced tomorrow for free. I went in to complain my clutch is slipping (6mt no tune) and they said they couldn’t feel it slip yet it did it to me on the way home. Anyhow when I was there they said the pump was leaking as well as my valve cover gasket so both will be fixed.

Well done James, very informative! Great to see the pictures of the bag inside the bottle. I was lucky getting water pump fixed under warranty! Not sure what im going to do about the bag inside the coolant bottle, maybe get a new one and remove bag, depends on cost really? Or just leave it and 🤞 lol.

@@jamesr50 Agreed, if you believe all the comments on You Tube you'd be expecting the world to end soon 🤣 I'm leaving the bag in both of my Golf's as I believe it's integral to the design of the car and not mentioned in the owners manual. Therefore any issues with that component VW can deal with it but if VW notice the bag is missing and there's subsequent overheating / Head gasket issues etc VW will say it's because the bag was removed and pivot around you tinkering with their components. That''s my opinion on VW..

If you think theres a blockage still, causing the cool vent, why didn't you get it flushed through whilst you were doing the Waterpump? Are you sure the cool vent issue isnt down to a Climate Control system problem instead (sticking actuator, something like that?)

Luke Clevely the plan Was to use a steamer to unblock it cos it can get pretty thick but the car wash next door was closed we were gonna borrow the steamer from them I’m gonna get that flushed then if it’s not that I’ll look at the climate control system

Mk7 water pump ...failed at 39months at 20000 miles cost £670 insane crap ...crayzy ..stupid design .. turns out its was just the rubber gasket leaking because whoever installed it hadn't torqued the screws up ...probably because they were screwing into plastic.... pathetic ...who said German cars were well designed?

On the last humans garage channel he removed it from his 2018 GTI MK 7.5. So if the 7.5 gti has it. I would think the 7.5 Golf R would have it too.

My S3 8v currently awaiting coolant regulator and new ECU due to coolant leak from regulator running down wires and shorting out sensor. On doing so damaged ECU costing £2037. But no reason why this happened and any reason why this could not happen again.....

Just a concern for me,, why didn’t you get a new expansion tank fitted at the time of doing the water pump, while it was in pieces it may have been easier and more cost effective to do so. If that bag parts ways it’s more grief for you. Hope it’s ok now

John Dearn You do have a point but didn’t think tbh silly mistake really, the expansion tanks are easy to change and they don’t really cost alot I’ll be getting one ASAP

you don't need to pay that much money,I saw the photo,they remove manifold,they don't know how to do this new model pump,they use the old model pump way to do, they don't need to do this ,only coolant fan ,water pump and starter motor, remove starter because I can turn flywheel to put the new belt on, only 2 hours total on my KZbin video will show me how to do it.

£112 per hour main dealer charges. MOT is coming up in January so I rang the main dealer to see how much to replace all discs and pads that I already have and just labour alone would be £340 £140 front £200 rear
