17/25 (even as a lifelong Quaker some answers evaded me) Worth noting, Pennsylvania was named not after the colony's founder William Penn but after the founder's father of the same name, who was not himself a Quaker to my knowledge
@thomasc9036Ай бұрын
Well... It was King Charless II who gave that name during the charter signing in honor of the William Penn's father. It was never the idea of William Penn or any Quakers.
@MartinKelleyАй бұрын
This is the question/answer I flagged. You're right that the state was named after Admiral Penn, much to the consternation of his son William, who very much didn't like the idea.
@thomasc9036Ай бұрын
@@MartinKelley Where did you hear/read about "not liking" the name? Willian Penn received the land by King Charles II to pay off his debt William's father. It was one of the largest land grants and almost unheard to be given to an individual. I highly doubt that claim because that would make him an extremely ungrateful son.
@MartinKelleyАй бұрын
@@thomasc9036 It's fairly common knowledge. Eg, Wikipedia's entry on the admiral: "After his death, his son, William, accepted the grant of land in the American colonies in lieu of money owed by the Crown to his father. William Penn had wanted to call the land 'New Wales,' which was objected to by the Secretary of State, Privy Council member and Welshman Leoline Jenkins. Penn instead put forward the name 'Sylvania.' The Council then chose to tweak this new name a bit by adding the prefix 'Penn' to honour the late Admiral, William Penn's father. After some protestation from William Penn, he reluctantly accepted it." William the younger had a rather contentious relationship with his father throughout his life. The Wikipedia citation is Andrew R. Murphy's 2018 biography, "William Penn: A Life." I've read it (or much of it, I think I bogged down at some point) and can recommend it. www.friendsjournal.org/book/william-penn-a-life/

After a lifetime attending churches in the evangelical and reformed traditions, I attended my first Quaker meeting. At the end of the meeting, when they asked me to say a few words, I tearfully said that I had spent my entire life attending churches where people implored God to speak to them, and was completely overwhelmed to find a group that actually were quiet long enough to hear Him speak.
@francescocantoni5665Ай бұрын
@TheJimNicholson Thank you for sharing your experience, I'm glad to read it! In my teens, one of the activities in my parish was the so-called "desert". We used to spend some time of retirement on a mountain in silence. Then we were asked to share our meditation. Mine was a bit silly and pretentious because maybe I wanted to live the moment a little too much. I know that it wasn't the same thing but the similarity amused me.

i've been a british quaker for a few years now, and got about 18/25 correct - mainly because i struggle to remember the names and positions of the various sects. that being said, nixon's position as a Quaker is debated, as despite being born and raised in a Quaker family, he seemingly did not attend a meeting as an adult, profess any Quaker beliefs nor hold to any key Quaker values - such as honesty. that being said, we cannot know a person's heart, so many consider his status to be ultimately unknown. also, as a very small nitpick, the word 'derby' is pronounced 'dar-by' in the UK!

@@napoleonfeanor Many European languages have a second and third person "you." The third person form is for more formal use, like when you're talking to a superior. The second person is for addressing a junior, a peer, or a close relation. This exists in English as well, but in modern English we phased it out and mostly use "you," which is technically the third person pronoun, for all situations. The second person pronouns are thou and ye. Ironically, today we associate that language with a sort of hyper-formality, but the opposite is true. So in English, the Lord's Prayer was originally said using the second person to address the Father, and this is because he *is* our father.

Answering the question before I watch the video (I’m not 100% on all of this): - Quaker is a derogatory name they picked up because other believers said that they “quake at the word of the Lord” - Pennsylvania was founded by a Quaker - I think they talk a lot about light and I think they call each other “friend” - They were common conductors on the Underground Railroad and were big proponents of abolishing slavery - They don’t believe in baptism - Their meetings include people of all ages and people take turns speaking as they feel led because the Holy Spirit can speak through anyone - Someone asked me if I was one because I wore a head-covering once (but I’m not sure that person knew anything about Quakers) 😂

I asked because I don't know what you guys think of Reform-Theology
@peacecraft344927 күн бұрын
@@noahtylerpritchett2682 It depends on the Quaker, we all have our own beliefs. As for different theologies: Not a fan of predestination unless its universal, lords supper I think is up to the believer on what the presence is. anmillennialism and its opposite I dont think anyone can truly know either way, infant baptism and adult baptism is fine if people want to do that but I dont view them as necessary. Calvinism I'm really not a fan of it because I did not like John Calvin and Arminianism is fine, I believe of course we are given free will. In general, I find theology to be a personal thing, as in whatever works for you and does not harm others, go for it. While we have no creeds, the most common ground Quakers follow is the teaching of the inner light found in all. From this understanding, you can go about any spiritual practice or belief you find appropriate to that. For me its silent worship. I hope this helped friend.
