I would replace all the glass except the windshield with Perspex, change the hood for a fibreglass one, remove the window motors, get a lighter set of wheels, remove a lot of soundproofing, maybe go for bucket seats, ditch the fender cross members, or at least ensure they are alloy not steel, then go to the barbershop for a haircut and clip your fingernails 👍👍

Well it won't be a racecar so I'm not going to take anything away that will take the few comforts it has. Small changes though

Interesting project and cool car you have chosen. Own a 1988 Apline vit 924 S (German Le Mans edition). It is the original "lightweight" from the factory, then without AC and manual steering. The seats and door sides are in thin flannel/cloth fabric. You probably don't need the windscreen wiper in the rear window and there is some weight in the insulation in the floor. Early 944 "cookie cutter wheels" are they lighter than teledial wheels? Euro bumpers are also mentioned, are probably lighter than us.
@tangentsbhb Жыл бұрын
The wiper has already been removed before I got the car as well as the rear hatch carpet being replaced by something homemade. The other carpet I bought is definitely heavy back there so I see what you mean though

Oh wow, those us models are lardy. Ive heard those bumpers and bumber shocks behind it are really heavy. Maybe a euro bumper conversion would be efficient for removing weight. Lighter exhaust and battery could be easy weight aswell.
@tangentsbhb Жыл бұрын
Yeah the bumpers add a bunch. I won't do a Euro conversion unless I find a smoking deal but I plan to remove the pads, fab new mounts, and modify my existing bumpers. A lithium battery is also the plan when this one goes

Make some chocks out of angle aluminum and zero the scale with them in place. That is how we do aircraft. Wheels may be a place to lose some weight if you get the right ones. I have an ex autocrossed LX 5.0 Foxbody and the racer removed all of the insulation. The 2nd owner put in Dynamat and a huge stereo (which I removed). There is not a whole lot more that I can think of other than what you are already planning.

Yeah some simple pieces of aluminum angle would have been a good move 😅 I'm going to remove some of the carpet padding but may add some sound deadening material in key areas.

Very cool, I've been putting my 87 924s on a diet as well and curious to see the results. I've done what you have but also removed the entire A/C system(condenser, lines, and blower) I would guess its over 50lbs+ plus frees up a little hp. Mine wasn't working anyway so I ditched it. One nice thing about the 924s, like the early 944 the Heat has its own blower motor so I kept it for defrost. Also I have a non Sunroof(slicktop) roof skin I plan to replace the roof. Plus ditch the electric sunroof motor. That Sunroof weighs a ton too. Rear carpet is pretty heavy too for carpet bc of the foam insulation. So you just loose the foam if you're keeping carpet. I removed the pop-up headlights motor and actuator, I got manual headlight brackets so the lights are permanently up all the time. But you loose the iconic pop-up coolness but saved some weight. I take mine Rally-X so every pound helps, idk how crazy in weight reduction you are going. I want to replace the rear hatch with lexan as well as the quarter windows and possibly some fiberglass body panels.
@tangentsbhb Жыл бұрын
Yeah your car is rad dude! I have been looking into manual latches for the sunroof and need to either fabricate some or buy some used ones. For the headlights I have an idea on how to lose the motor but convert the system to manual with a cable. I really want to see if I can make it work.
@anthonydietmeier6524 Жыл бұрын
@tangentsbhb I've contemplated a cable light setup also, definitely do an in depth video if this happens. And for what it's worth I've got over 270lbs taken out of my early 944 while keeping it stock looking, no fiberglass or lexan yet.
@tangentsbhb Жыл бұрын
I have many ideas flowing for a light setup! I think it will work once I begin the process. It will definitely be a dedicated video

50-50 weight distribution, I guess they were right 😁 My idea for weight savings? I’m not taking anything off it because how much gain are we talking here? Other than perhaps lighter racing wheels maybe. I suppose you could remove the bumpers and flush out the body panels? Find some carbon fiber replacement doors and hood or make your own? The seats have to be pretty heavy and carpet. I don’t know BJ, this all just seems kinda pointless. It’ll be interesting to see what you come up with 👍🏻😁
@tangentsbhb Жыл бұрын
I like to focus on many small changes that add up. You can quickly get 100lbs out of something by doing it with multiple 2lb, 10lb, and 15lb changes. There is no weight goal and the car is not for the track but losing it where possible is simply a focus

There's a growing number of people who put a 2.3 liter v-5 VW Passat engine in these when new power is required. Factory spec will get you 180 BHP, and with a build and tuning, many approach 300 HP.
