Pay should be a huge factor. Let's be very serious, this job does not pay as well as it should for the amount of education you need. Median salary is skewed by states like California that pay a lot more. Sounds good, but realistically it aligns with the cost of living which is much more expensive than it would be in somewhere like Oklahoma or Kansas.

there is also a significant difference between pay if you are a school psychologist with a masters or a doctorate degree
@kevonabaines176
@kevonabaines176 3 жыл бұрын
This is actually incorrect the pay range for school psychologist is rooted in experience and performance, not degree. Doctorates and Specialist make the same giving the idea that your emphasizing work with in the school on a 10 month contract. If you are speaking in regard to persons with PhDs teaching at college and universities they are not doing work in schools outside of research much of the time. If taken the specialist route with desires to work directly with children in the school setting you can make just as much as a person with a PhD. It is important to remember there are three levels M.A., Specialist, Doctorate. The difference significance in salary is between M.A. & Specialist/Doctorate. Then of course you have where you reside. Hope this helps !

Hi! I’m studying to become a school psychologist now and am in the second year of my graduate program. I want to work in a school once I graduate but I’m also curious what it would be like to work in a hospital, and other settings like private practice. Could you make a video on job options for school psychologists outside of the school setting and what those responsibilities would look like?

It is not as easy to build relationships with kids like it is when you are a teacher. You have so many kids on your caseload that you don't really have much time. Not saying its impossible but if you want to be able to create relationships and bonds, teaching or school counseling allows you to do more of that. Thanks for the video suggestion! Keep an eye out for that :D

@@JHALandCBForever I think either job will be rewarding in their own way. I would recommend making a list of the things you are looking for in you dream job and then look at the pros and cons of each career as well. Try and figure out which one would fit your desires and personality. For example, you do a lot of report writing as a sp and are in meetings more often than not, are those thing you would be ok with and enjoy? Look at it in ways to try and help you figure out what you really want because grad school is a big commitment so its important to be sure! :)

Hi Vernice! I am exploring school psychology myself. I know have been approved to pursue this as an option and I have a degree in Applied Science with a psychology minor but I wanted to point out a friend with a sociology degree was allowed to explore this as a possibility as well. This was an option for him as part of his graduate school program of choice, and I'm not sure whether there was anything extra he had to do to be eligible for this but he has this as an option. I hope this was helpful.

Hi Ijay! It is not required to have a BA in psychology to enter a SP grad program but it definitely is helpful. If you can, take some courses in psychology before entering the program. I would also recommend speaking to the program department and see what they recommend because some programs have certain requirements. Its a plus that you have experience working in a school!

hi! my university has a PsyD program for school psychology that's accredited, and the entry is at least a bachelor's degree. it only takes 4 years to complete. although it's a year longer than the specialist degree, i feel like it would be the smartest move because i really want to hold a doctorate. is it worth it? thoughts?
@MrsSchoolPsych
@MrsSchoolPsych 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I think if you eventually want to get your doctorate and have the opportunity to do it now, then I don't see why not go for it. It really comes down to your goals, what your state requires, if it makes a difference, etc. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice (doctorate or specialist degree) :)

@Babyluv_
@Babyluv_ 4 жыл бұрын
choose school psych!!! I'm a teacher. Have been for the past 5 years and I'm back in school for school psych and I love it! Both are rewarding careers but teaching can feel less rewarding because you get a lot of kids who are not invested in learning at all. So, you end up feeling bad because you put in all this effort in a lesson, just for kids to basically let you know that they don't care nor appreciate it. The parents can be annoying. I've had parents demand that I give their child special treatment. Administration will constantly harass teachers to make unethical decisions. Such as pass kids who are obviously failing. The school culture among teachers is sometimes very toxic. It's survival of the fittest. Everyone is snitching and throwing people under the bus. I find that the school professionals who are not teachers are the happiest: school psychologist, counselors, social worker, OT, PT, nurse, etc. There's a lot of pressure in being a teacher. The career has a high turnover rate. Many teachers are underpaid and very unhappy.

I agree with all that you said, and want to add how draining each and every day can be. At the end, I asked myself am I truly happy every day? The answer was no, of course. Hi! Im on my last year as an undergrad and just became interested in SP. I’ve heard there’s A LOT of writing involved which is one of my concerns because writing is not my strongest skill. Do you have to be a highly skilled writer for this job?
@MrsSchoolPsych
@MrsSchoolPsych 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, there is A LOT of writing involved. As an SP you will be writing a lot of reports. If you feel that writing is not your strongest skill, you can always use resources available that help students improve their writing. The more practice, the better you will get. The reports you write as an SP are considered legal documents so they should be well written. But don't let it discourage you, just practice, use resources to help you, and you'll get better!
