Glade you encouraged becoming debt free as much as possible as soon as possible. I have been debt free for years now and I can testify that debt may be your biggest threat or obstacle to achieving the goal of self reliance/homestead.

Great video Eric and well done. My husband and I are still homesteading and we both turned 70. We have been here 33 years. We have minor health issues but I think this is how God wants us to live and we love it.

My wife and I came across Dave Ramsey when we had two kids and 15k of debt. We were out of debt before one year, and we bought a house not too long after. We are now looking selling our house to move to Saskatchewan to homestead.

Dave Ramsey, knowledge about getting out debt is awesome. We saved up $3.000 instead of $1.000 for emergency fund. Once we knew we could do this. I had to challenge myself and tackle the biggest debt, which was paying off my home. I had a 15yrs loan and paid that off in 7yrs. To be honest, it was very hard. Everything was breaking down, so the emergency fund save us a lot. I know this isn't the way Dave would do it. But it's what worked for us.
@CountryLivingExperience3 жыл бұрын
Great job! The debt snowball has been a blessing for us as well. We deviated from his plan a little bit as well. I was just never comfortable with that 1k emergency fund. We put more in there just like you.

Love love love your video!!! Your encouragement is so empowering for me. so much so that it brought tears to my eyes. My partner and I are both 60, and out of shape. Last year my partner retired from the medical field and we sold everything in Dallas to moved Central Maine to be closer to my father, 85, and whom has since moved in with us. We bought this property with a large farm house, 4-bay barn (3-bays open on one side), a small apple orchard of 9 producing apple trees, and a small outbuilding that would be perfect to expand my online business to a brick n mortar. All this is on 13 great acres of open field. So, I think we have great potential here to be self-sufficient. Because I have been watching so many videos, I am simply overwhelmed on where to start.

There is a saying, if you want to know how to live your life, think what you want written on your tombstone, and work backwards. In other words, start with what you want your homestead to be and think about what it would take to accomplish it. There is an awful lot of information on how to get started, but if it is in the wrong direction, it will take more effort later to correct it. So, work backwards from the end goal, and develop your plan. Often just writing the goal down and the steps needed to reach them is half the battle. Much like a budget, it is a plan to guide you as to where to expend your energy. "A budget is telling your money where to go, rather than wondering where it went" - Dave Ramsey

in the beginning how did you guys manage to get needed supplies with your medical issues. this is what i am facing. I have many years of experience in this area and more but i cannot drive right now due to a health issue. i have worked on a small farm 4 acres and lived most of my 60 years in suburbs but working with nature and tradition, herbal medicine, blacksmithing, canning preserving, handyman, heavy equipt operator, i am now studying natural solutions for livestock I am not giving up on my dream because it realistically has my heart consumed with truth. this video opened my eyes more and reignited hope and possibility i also am 95% out of debt

Hello. We do not have any medical issues so I don't understand how to help you there. Congrats on being out of debt, it is a huge step to obtaining a country homestead.

This video has inspired me. Thank you for that. After watching Daniel with Arms Family, my wife and I have been talking about this for over two years. Just curious, what were you looking for in a homestead? We currently are looking at farms away from the city in a more conservative county. We are pinched in between three medium cities now and we want out. Thank you for this video.
@CountryLivingExperience3 жыл бұрын
We're glad it was helpful! Daniel is a cool guy. They do a lot of great things on their homestead. At first we were looking for raw land because I am an Architect and had designed a cool off-grid home. We lost out of five pieces of property before we decided to look for a home. It had to have a barn, home and fencing (and be a decent distance for my wife to drive to work). We are about 30 minutes away from a medium sized city. I hope you get out soon.

@@CountryLivingExperience yeah. I know the feeling. I am a commercial general contractor and high in residential. Obama years destroyed many of us. Just reached a point that I am fed up with it all. How politics got involved in the construction industry is amazing. We are hoping to check out later this year. Spend weeks looking at properties. My thinking is it has to have a water source and pond or a way to build one.
@CountryLivingExperience3 жыл бұрын
@@1963RonTKiser Having a water source is good. We only have a well. We will be adding rainwater collection this year too.

So, would you say that one acre is the minimum? I have I think about a quarter acre in an unincorporated Township, ( in fact being from Houston you might actually know where Garwood Texas is) so I know I could grow some stuff on my own, but I don't know if that piece of dirt would be enough, even it work quality soil ( which I'm guessing black clay probably isn't LOL) Measuring from fence to fence I got 65 ft by 65 ft oh, so that may not actually be a quarter acre after all
@CountryLivingExperience3 жыл бұрын
I would actually look for no less than 2 acres. We wrote an article a few years back about homestead size. 2 acres is the smallest. I have heard of Garwood. Another great thing about a larger size property is that you are farther away from neighbors. 😉
