This list is so real. I've spent $7.7k on bike gear and $1.3k on running gear since I started training in 2021 for all 3 sports. I've spent $1k on swimming gear + swimming lessons to get better, and I still haven't even done my first triathlon. This sport is amazing but it is also such a money pit.

I got myself a 800€ second hand bike. Lets assume i put another 500€ for maintenance and bike clothing (it was definitely less, but i dont know how much). Running was 60€ for shoes. I already had normal sport shorts and shirts. Lets say 100€ to keep it an even number. Swimming roughly 100€ for equipment. And 250€ for 2 year membership in a swim club. That was cheaper than paying the entry every time. Thats 1750€ and i could have gone for far less e.g. for a cheaper bike. I was already in the upper half of the whole start list as well as my agegroup in my first triathlon. Triathlon certainly is not the cheapest (my calculation over 2 years equals 73€/month). But your costs are most certainly so high because YOU want it to be. Which is okay of course and investment in health are always good. Just do not tell the story as if it has to be that expensive.

how many bottles u gonna rock on the bike at once? I feel like tri suit is so important, make sure u swim in it before the race to make sure the front doesnt balloon w water.

I think I’m going to go 4 bottles for the race. 2 bottles with carbs and 2 bottles with electrolytes. I will keep that in mind thanks!

About 70% of my stuff is used, just throwing the idea out there yes even my nice tri swim suit is used but in decent condition. Total spend on gear alone around $2300. Specialized tarmac bike got from the “guy around the corner “. My bike bag is the most expensive part at $650 and still have bread left. I’m happy. Yes the bag was more expensive than the bike. Bike is carbon and about 8 years old. She old but still rideable. Look around people, you’ll thank your wallet later you could have saved so much more.

It's very expensive. I was lucky to have a bike already from when covid was happening, but i still had to spend quite a bit on maintenance on it.

Great question, I love it! I have the COROS pace 3. I had the garmin forerunner 955 when I first started running but I found it was heavy, clunky and too much color. I wanted something sleek, light and durable. Coros also has an AMAZING BATTERY at an amazing price! 7 days or more on one charge and found with triathlons, ironmans and long bike rides, a healthy battery is a necessity. Did a ton of research so I am glad I can finally share it! **not sponsored**(but coros please sponsor me)

It doesn't have to be expensive. You don't need the best of the best especially as an amateur rider. Unless your riding for the Olympics or Kona you can get by with all the top level gear 7500 is ridiculous

you lost me at shoes... As long as your are not below 3:50/km it's just a waste of money to go into so high tech footwear.

No one needs a brand new bike for around 3k… I bought mine for 350$ and I bet I can finish 180 km on that. Its 10+ years, yeah. But who cares. People finished an Ironman or Triathlon already many years before us. So why not use their equipment as well. Also the shoes are kinda expensive. I don’t know if you guys have decathlon over there, but here in Europe you can get really great running shoes for around 80$. I’m not paying extra for Nike or whatever brand. Same goes for every other clothing equipment. Their top of the line equipment is probably the same if not better than double the price equipment with a Nike batch on.

You don't need super expensive gears to finish the race. Vietnamese athlete Thanh Vu finished and became the world champion of the Swiss Ultra 2022 (deca ultra triathlon) with a 1700$ bike and road bike helmet, and some cheap glasess. 38km of swimming, 1800km of biking and 422km of running without fancy gears, and still champion of the world lol.
