That was actually really helpful. Thanks. Seeing practical use of the car with family made the pluses and minuses of a Tesla pretty clear. I think the obvious decreased stress of autopilot and that the app is finding and picking the supercharging stations lools like it outweighs the stress of needing to go out of your way a bit for them, regardless of the fuel cost savings. In an all day family road trip, that's where the real money is.

Great video, I have never had an electric car before and I was very interested in learning not only the cost but also the process, and you did a great job of explaining how everything worked. Thanks for the video, just got the New Toyota Siena Hybrid with 35 MGP and gas tank of 18 Gal... so 18*4 = $72 full tank and on paper that should last 630 miles... A 500 miles trip should cost around $58 ... not that much over your $43 total and probably save a few hours waiting :)

We recently did a road trip from Minneapolis to Detroit via 94 past Chicago, then from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, along the UP Lake Michigan coast (Hwy 2) and then across Wisconsin back to Minneapolis. We averaged about $0.40/kWh overall. It depends on the charger location and time of day.

Pretty interesting. Due to the lack of charging stations vs gas stations, depending on the area/destination, it seems you could really add up a lot of extra miles/time often going on longer routes just to find a charging station & you could find yourself with unnecessary trouble such as going through more road construction, congested traffic, & even into dangerous areas. Neat, but for most I think they would still choose paying a little extra for easier, more direct, & faster traveling.

This was a very well done video. Great job explaining it. I know it’s a year later so this may not be known at this point, but… do you recall how much total time you spent charging? One of things I’d like to see for average users of Teslas is not just their cost savings, but the time “paid” for charging while on road trips. I want one very badly. However, I still am on the fence about having to wait 25-30 minutes to charge at times. 10-15 is doable, but when you take long journeys, those 20+ minute stops will really add to your time. Enjoyable video to watch. There are so many factors to consider when you compare the many choices of cars today. A Prius traditional hybrid can get you 600+++ miles on a tank of gas while driving 65 MPH or so. Cost and comfort are factors as well. Long trips vs daily driving and access to home charging would be factors to consider. The cost of gas vs electricity It is good to have more choices.

Should have done your homework before the purchase. He just proved to me that it takes 3 charges at about 30 minutes each, with additional charges if you don't unplug in time and that his battery has already degraded 10%. I'm not convinced EV is ready yet for prime time.

I get 50 miles per gallon in my hybrid and it cost me 30 to fill up and about 495 miles per tank so cheaper than all electric plus the time saved with not having to stop and charge. So at the current time I’ll stick with hybrid and not full electric. This was a very helpful video thanks

That is supercharger on road trip. Home is dirt cheap. I would argue you spend less time on charging ev then you do filling up gas tank. It takes me 2 seconds to plug-in similar to a phone. I go in my house come back with a full charge. That’s time I’m saving not driving to a gas station and pumping gas 52 weeks a year. Also forgetting the fact I’m not standing outside freezing my butt off filling up. Imagine you had to take your phone out to refil vs charging it at home. It’s insane to believe that is more convenient.

@@bamboy06 That’s awesome. I used to own a Prius and it was great on the road and reliable. I later switched to a 2018 Tesla model S. Paid about two or three times of what you probably would pay for a Prius. Do I regret it? No. Purchased it during the free unlimited super charging for life and haven’t paid a dime to charge it in the 57,000 miles I have on it. If I were looking to get one today I would stick to what you got for sure and hold off until it makes a little more sense financially. I feel batteries are close to having a major break through. I just got my Tesla Model Y about 3 weeks ago and I live in Southern California. Charging at Tesla Superstations usually cost around $0.45 a kWh. Since I charge at home mostly, this isn't an issue. Next month, I will be taking a trip to Northern California and back. Round trip will be about 750 miles. I am looking forward to seeing my actual cost.

I have a 2018 MS 100D and wish I could afford the new Model S. I noticed the 1000-mile charge rate on your MY. I think my MS has only been able to charge at about 500 miles per hour at a V3 supercharger. Newer is usually better but I do have the free lifetime charging. Don't buy one unless you plan on getting a 240v put in at the house. Plug it in and forget about it. Only cost me $35 a month and I drive 150 miles round trip to see my kid every other weekend most people drive a lot less than I do.

I drive a Cadillac ELR, often referred to as a ‘dressed-up Chevy Volt.” 40 mile ‘pure electric’ range, with a 1.4 gas generator. $85k when new and less than 2900 made 2014-2016. Nearest Tesla public charging is about 50 miles from home. GM has ‘fast charging’ out, but the only public fast charging is 110 miles from home. Bottom line? I LOVE this car. Drive it 400 miles to L.A? Often. Vegas? Yep. Gas generator keeps the batteries charged when traveling. Mileage is about 40/gal. So, local driving is pure electric and gas on long trips. No range anxiety. Best of both worlds, for now.

No I would not recommend anyone to use Tesla or any electric cars for long distance drive. If the car breaks now on the road, it is over. You can't fix it in a short time and many repair shops don't do it. Another issue is the charging time. You basically waste several hours waiting and doing nothing. It was really annoying and stress you out.

You might not remember since this was a while back but did you take into account your starting energy and finish with the same energy at the house to actually get a true cost. I mean you wouldn’t be that far off and less you started really full and finished really empty. The comparison was a little unfair at the end. You should’ve compared it against a RAV4 hybrid or some kind of hybrid SUV. I understand the point you were making but that was a very poor example. I have a RAV4 prime and a Tesla model three performance. The actual cost for the supercharger versus the 40 miles per gallon that I get at 75 miles an hour is very negligible over a road trip. But the home charging is no contest. The RAV4 prime gets about 3 mi./kW in the Tesla gets easily 4 1/2. Basically 50% more efficient. But the convenience of a road trip cannot be overestimated on gas. But I just found your Contant and I really love it thank you. Very good information. I will state again that you only showed chick a fill chicken in your video. You didn’t show any other food. So we know which one you enjoy best. Good video! But I was thinking that there is probably no road tax added to the charging cost. Do you report mileage and pay the road tax like truckers do when they don't purchase fuel in states they drive through? If not, this will be a future cost as EVs are adopted. In the future cars will likely self report and you get a bill in the mail.

I have a 2023 Honda crv hybrid. I fill with 50 dollars @ 4.20 per gallon. My average mpg is 40.2 which gives me a range of 510 miles. I love EV’s but Hybrids seem to be the best of both worlds. Idk just my opinion.

Thanks for the video. I own a 2022 Prius prime and I am considering trading it in for a model 3. However, after watching this, I’m really thinking it over. You see, 500 miles on my Prius (at a minimum 55 mpg) it can do that distance with 9.5 gallons, which at $3.55 a gallon would be $33.72. I know charging at home would be a lot less, but how much less? Can it be more economical than my Prius? Also, I like Teslas but I’m not a fan of the glass rooftop, that’s too much glass. Thank you.

Actually, if you can average about 4.5 miles per KWh driving the model 3, with a mix of city and highway driving, then at 0.175 per kWh at home where I live, I could drive 500 miles with about $19 of electricity. That’s a savings of about $14 per full tank on the Prius. That’s about 42% savings over the Prius.

The fortunate thing is that on the typical day I do not use a supercharger only on road trips.

500 miles, so let’s see. If you take a modern car with pretty much all highway miles, you’ll get about 40mpg. That will use about 12.5 gallons of gas, and at $4.05 a gallon, you’d spend about $50. That’s really only about $8 more expensive which makes the difference way smaller. Not to mention the initial purchase price would probably be less expensive for an ice vehicle and the total trip time would be less by pumping gasoline. Starts to look like if you want to save time and money, the frugal option would be ICE. Anyways good video boss, always fun to road trip with the kids 👍

A BMW X3 xdrive gets 29-30mpg highway and has a range of almost 500 miles. You would have only had to stop once and saved over an hour not having to stop and charge (extra time getting to/parking etc. and leaving charger station). Only saved maybe $30 (premium in X3, not all suv's need it). If you can afford a midsized luxury suv, $30 is easily worth it to get there faster.

great question. It saves time. For traveling purposes, when the charge gets around 80% it slows down tremendously. It can take 15 minutes to go from 20% to 80% and It can take another 30 minutes, or more, to go from 80%-100%.

Damn so I did a trip that was 340 miles Full charge from when I left my home the trip to there was 170 miles got there with 15% left charged it Manteca California which the rate is currently at $.45 per kilowatt so it was a total of $26.10 to charge it from 15% to 75% that took about 30 mins. At night time I left the hotel fo charge it to do have to deal with it in morning and oh my gosh from 75% to try to charge to 100% took 49 mins and at 90% I got impatient and just unplugged it and that was $10.91 the rate of $.45 per kilowatt I don’t know why maybe I’m new to this but I did see and noticed that from 80% to 100% the charging rate time is a lot slower and the kilowatts is a lot slower uggghhh but in order for me to get home I have to charge it or I have to stop AGAIN which sucks with smaller kids who always want to buy snacks or food or toys if at times area annoyed of having to stop when they just want to be home!!!! My overall perspective on owning a electric car for now a year : is if you do the math in my bmw m4 I would get to my trip of 370 miles with $50ish bucks only 14 more I paid for the supercharging and huge key factor is I Do NOT REPEAT DO NOT have 2 spend over an hour and a half charging at the superchargers and what most individuals do when they’re at the superchargers get off of the vehicles and buy things nearby so I spend always more !!!!! Great car I have one but I would never buy another one again for myself time is worth more that whole hour and a half of having to charge it is lame 😒 and not worth it I travel a lot so to me I hate the fact to charge it and let’s keep in mind because I do travel a lot for work I had to purchase solar panels in my home that were a total of 64 which was contact to buy of $71,000 so realistically the model Y out the door cost me about $76k then Few months of getting electric bill of 1600 I had to opt for getting solar panels in my home which I’m now in the whole of 71,000 for it so realistically to keep them the model Y and solar panels I got myself in debt of $147,000 This part of owning a electric car isn’t spoken upon the real cost and it’s not at times for someone who drives a lot gas i the way to go because of time spent and solar panels needed in a home to keep the electric bill not be $1600 every month

Not to mention that the comparison was not fair at all since he was comparing an SUV to the Model 3, which is, by all intents and purposes, a Sedan. At the gas price shown in the video, a decent hybrid Sedan could easily do the entire 500 mile trip for ~ $42, with virtually no stops. At current gas prices, however, the trip would cost $64 in a good hybrid. If the electricity costs haven't gone up, then Teslas would currently win, but only due to gas inflation.

Results may vary. I charge at work for free using a welder outlet in the machine shop. MID Modesto irrigation charges .16 per Kw at second and highest tier. If you are on PGE (Pacific gas and electric) it is .24 to .26 depending on time of year and day with a TOU meter. With PGE you have to have solar to offset your house and car. My place in Copperopolis has a 12 Kw setup. When not charging the Model 3 LR it puts 30 to50 Kwh's to the grid each day. It puts on average 1.2 Mwhrs to the grid Monthly. What is your Sun number at your residence? 64 panels, if newer, is a huge amount. A system that size is double of mine. Possibly you have a lot of shading?

@@JustFrugalMe Get a Prius. I have 150,000 miles on my 2016 Prius Two, get between 48 and 58 mpg (depending on the wind direction) and have never spent a dime on maintenance except for a single pair of tires.

How about when you compare it to a similarly priced & sized 2023 Rav 4 prime hybrid & 2023 model Y long range & it was all highway driven miles Rav 4 would give 600 miles on a single rank vs Tesla long range 330.. I think Gas is still king plus the time you would save battery cars still need work done on the range.

Well I drive 2013 Honda Civic I get 41 miles per gallon on the highway. I would have only feel that one time in 500 miles and having a 13 gallon fuel tank it wouldn't be 40 bucks. Plus I will make it home a lot faster than 9 hours. But hey either way is good but 9 hours on the road for a 500 mile trip is a bit lengthy

No, Teslas don't need much maintenance compared to standard vehicles. Tesla vehicles have fewer moving parts, and you don't have to do regular fluid changes or deal with a combustion engine. My insurance went up only by a few dollars a month, nothing insane

So by the math my 2013 VW passat tdi that gets about 43 MPG would be dang close to the Tesa to go that distance...yeah i want to buy one but the only real savings is if you can charge at hone. In my case.$.10 kw... great for home but not so great for road trips @$.35KW. Good video...thanks for the price breakdown. Now I'm just doubling the Kia miles and halving the cost so not super accurate. Also I have a 750 mile range. Also insurance is much more unfortunately. And $20k more will buy a lot of miles (200,00) at $4 a gallon. Think I'll have to wait

At this stage an EV like this Tesla is really designed for your daily/weekly commute and this is where they shine. Plug it in at night, unplug in the morning and good to go. No visiting these costly fuel stations again, how good is that.

Location matters. I charge up to 80% and everyday I have roughly 280 miles for the day, which is more than enough that I need. Supercharging takes about 15 minutes on road trips… with kids that’s perfect, every 3 hours by time they get a snack and restroom we are back on the road.

I think if you charge to a full 100 percent since you’re taking a long trip it would at least cut one of those stops off Maybe two Also the cost of the trip might be cheaper in the off-peak times because out here in California it’s half the price before 11am and after 9pm

After 80% the charging speed slows down significantly. It can take you 15 minutes to get to that 80% and another 30 minutes to get from the 80-100%

@@bigcee730 I watched a different review of somebody who did a road trip from Chicago to Florida (like 20+ hrs), and they said it felt significantly easier in their electric (non-Tesla) car than previously in gas, b/c they had to make a few extra stops and take more regular breaks; even if it was like an extra 2 hrs total; so I guess it depends?
