How much does it COST to check into Costa Rica?! - Onboard Lifestyle ep.293

On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle, the Captain saves $500 by checking into Costa Rica without a marina agent before we jump across the bay to get a bit closer to the action. The ladies pop into town to provision basik properly before leaving the area as this is the last major town that we will see in Costa Rica. It seems that Costa Rica is not cruser friendly. Also I would recommend using ear plugs when cleaning the bottom in the water. I got a terrible ear infection once! After that I would use pantyhose over my head to keep the critters out of my hair too. Fair winds and following seas is my wish for you!

Costa Rica Is not cruiser friendly at all. They don't need too, because all the marina's are filled with multi-million dollar sport fishing boats. They make you jump through hoops with paperwork before charging $4.75/ foot per day plus utilities. CR is a beautiful place, but we stayed clear of all the marina's.

Don't know where you can anchor down around the Oso Peninsula... -Almost the southern end of the country-... but that is an extra-special nature preserve!!! I use to spend time working at a research station in the mountain side above, and got to visit the peninsula on occasion. Also, just beyond that, right next to Panama is one of the best left-break surfing waves on Earth. Also, if you make it down to Golfito, then get inland to Neily, (25 long but scenic miles), is a quaint little town, good grocery store that Linh and Emma will, no doubt, enjoy... ...but Teal, do yourself a favor, find the small bakery down the street from the market, and buy your wife a loaf of the Chocolate bread/cake... 😉😜🥰 ...you will be ehhhmmmm, VERY glad you did.

Unfortunately, the prices don't go down until Panama. Compass gets alot of love, but for whatever reason, hates the camera. He hides when he sees one of us pick up a camera. Lol

Keep your green onions in water they will continue to grow, just cut as you need.

That's what I usually do. Sometimes they last and sometimes they go bad. I think it really depends on how the bunch of green onions I start with were grown.

I had that Howler monkey 'alarm clock' experience when I rented a cabin at Manuel Antonio park a few years back. If you think hearing them from your boat is loud...try right next to them in the jungle. I thought they were in my room...Jaring and surreal! Consider using ear protection while hull scraping, critters like to grow in there, hanging a spear gun or sling close by not a bad idea either, some of my best "catches" have been body guarding scrapers.

It's weird how expensive it is there. When I was in Costa Rica there were a lot of people who had retired from the states because it was so cheap. Of course I wasn't on the coast. Maybe it's cheaper in the interior of the country. I suppose that it might make a difference that I was there about 40 years ago. 🙄

Regarding the dinghy, have you thought about filling with expanding foam, instead of using air. It’s light and no air leaks, liked the episodes…

The problem is that once you fill it the water still permeates through the open seams and the dinghy doubles then triples in weight. I have seen people that have done that and eventually the dinghy is to heavy to be practical.

The plan for the dinghy is to get to a place where it's possible to buy a replacement. They haven't been to that place yet. Probably Panama.

I am ever surprised at the continued need for a motor on this very capable sail boat. 8 minutes in and "theres not enough wind" despite a full flag flying in the same shot. And so much motor sailing. Id think with the price of diesel alone there would be less call for the yanmar these days......

Kinda sounded like Costa Rica doesn't really want cruisers.. $500 US. or 12 hours,,, Ah,, think not!! Really!! Ya think if one spends that kind of money at a grocery store, they would wave that arrival fee. But both!!! Wow.. You never mentioned, are the other boats going the entire trip with you,or was this just a buddy up to Costa Rica? Yeah, is winter/spring, it's their season. Lot warmer there than anywhere North of the Mason Dixon Line!! Not sue of your time, but Spring break as well. So computer down, we call that a snow day in the schools back here.. Guessing you call it ,, a,, "teachers planning day!". Any school you can go to, dressed in a bathing suit, is fine by me!!!

Yes, you have to cancel the TIP when you leave the country. I believe they take it from you when you check out of the country.

Those are our inflatable belt packs. We wear them in more benign conditions as well as keep them in our dinghy. It's also less bulky and not as sweaty then our usual inflatable vests.

Dingy leak: could one not though tubeless tyre sealed in the air tanks. One might have to flip the dingle or take it on a rough ride to spread the latex.

The issue is that 20 lineal feet of seams have opened up. Every time we fix it, other seams blow out. This dinghy has reached the end of it's lifespan.

My experience in Costa Rica is so much like the USA. hectic, expensive. Almost as you never left the USA. So, don't like it. For a modern Country, the crew checkin process is too complicated. If you put the green onion in a little pot soil medium after cutting down to the white part and replanted it- it grows back and back again. You can have green onions year round and never buy them.

I'm sure that's the case, but since we are in coastal areas, they really cater to tourism and more importantly the sportfishing boats. Those guys are kings around these parts with big wallets to spread the wealth. It's good and bad. Good for the economy, bad for cruisers on a budget. Lol

I did get a little infection on that cut I sustained on my knuckle. Been trying to use cream to help minimize the scarring. You are so right on that. I did use neosporin cream on it, but it wasn't enough.

They can do it in less than 3 hours as well as us if we timed it right. It took us longer because we were with 2 other boats and waited for everyone to get their paperwork processed as well. It's nice to know there are options. We did find it a bit odd the marinas require you to use an agent if you were to go into the marina. So for us it would cost 500usd in agent fees + 206.63usd (per night). That's a lot of money for one day.
