We've all dreamt of blasting around the Nürburgring in one of our favourite cars, but do you know what the consequences would be if you came off the track? We've found out so that you (hopefully) don't have to!

I live in the US and I can defiantly vouch for it being reasonable actually even if you completely wipe out. The cost of most prestigious tracks in the US like Virginia international Raceway are inclusive cost and cost of individual race pass is between $3000 and $6000 depending on season and how much of a crew you bring and expect to race. You can get in much cheaper with a massive group and split the cost. However I raced my friend’s cars at VIR once and I learned cuz of race requirements basically $3000 -$6000 already required extra in the cars themselves from 6 point harnesses and race seats to roll cages to fire suppression and fuel and power mr cut offs to the race outfits.. TL;DR cost of racing on a great track in the US without wrecking cost about as much as racing then completely wiping out at the Ring.

How does anyone even acuse them from "stealing/robbery" with those fees? 1 - You're driving there because you want to; 2 - Nobody told you to crash, not their problem if you don't know your car and what it can do / how it will respond; 3 - What is their problem, however, is track maintenance and safety. To upkeep all safety measures for a 21km track... you need not only a lot of manpower but equipament as well, that also needs to be maintained; 4 - If you thought racing wasn't expensive and never considered you'd have to pay for repairs yourself if you damage a track, especially the nurburgring which is famous af for being opened to the public whenever it doesn't have a scheduled race, the bill suits you. Think of it as a lesson learned by the hard way. The only people which I feel bad that have to pay those bills is when they crash thanks to other people / external reasons who can't prove it wasn't their fault. That being said, take a gopro with you. The 300€ you invest in it can not only save you in those situations, but it can also save you on your normal commutes. These days, being prepared is everything.

Been out there 4 times, the simple case if you want to go and drive it is the following statement: " Drive within your limits and the vehicles" Basically , don't drive like a complete and utter tw@t, Some things i found helped me first time i went: > Get a sighter lap from someone there, plenty of brits or germans will gladly give you a passenger ride (especially if you offer a few beer tokens!) so you can get a feel for the track, no simulator prepares you for the G forces through some sections like the foxhole. > Take a friend to act as a co driver and have them keep an eye out for faster cars when you have your first run, and take it in turns, one of you gets a free sighter lap to learn the course to boot. > Get some guidence from a experenced Ringer if you can with them in the passenger seat , good example , Alex doing his MX5 lap with Marsha (Spelling) > Make sure your car's in top condition , especially brakes and cooling system as these take the most abuse. Bikers will not be happy if your car dumps coolant!

Replace coolant with distilled water with no additives. Shouldn't having a sorted out vehicle the first thing you think about not something that just comes up in the list? And if you do track driving shouldn't you have made sure by default your car is in order regardless of where you are going to drive? Some rhetoric questions for everyone to ponder on their own.

I’ve been a passenger in a ring taxi but consider myself a total novice in terms of racing. Most young 1.4 corsa drivers have played it on a computer or done a track day in a super car and believe themselves qualified to race. The problem is, computers don’t give you the feel of the bumps, height on some apex’s or the sheer scale of the track. Those who’ve done track days in a tuned down super car are driving on a pristine surface with near slicks, however the ring is far from pristine, the track is littered with spray paint, household paint, the contents of Steve’s leaking sump on his 320d. It’s a brilliant place to visit but drive it with caution. On the subject of cost, I agree, it should be expensive, after all the number 1 rule is no racing or time trials, during touristenfahrten it’s a regular German toll road and some areas have speed limits!

@@jentsenadriaenssens5017 I luckily have not crashed, but as far as I am aware on most major tracks around the world you pay for the track in the entry fee (including your liability to the track). This cover any accidents. The only reason why track may want to recover damages from you is if there is a reason to suspect (and ways to prove) you crashed in bad faith... which is very unusual. I have been on countless track-days where people had crashes and nobody ever been asked to pay any damages for the track. I have colleagues who race for the team in Silverstone 24, again never heard of them paying for track... for their own cars sure, they all cry how expensive it was and how broke they are. Sure my experience mostly from UK, but I am not aware of any other track where such aggressive charging is present. I mean I have not seen people discussing how expensive is to crash in Imola or Spa... at least not in the sense in terms of caring for the track damage itself. Is this a German thing then? The safety aspect is most important - in all track they focus on clearing tracks, removing vehicles and bringing everyone to safety first. There is no such thing like "price-list" for each part, but as I said - sure if you did something stupid and they feel that wasn't accident, they may want to go after you after the events.

Sorry, but you forgot to mention the most important thing: In Germany you are legally required to have a so called Haftpflichtversicherung (the most basic of insurances) it covers ALL damages you caused on any road in Germany. Since the Ring is considered a toll-road, this insurance also applies here. You will still need to pay to fix your car, unless you have a Vollkaskoversicherung (which covers all damages caused by you and to your car).

@@MrMarcomc81 nearly all german insurances define the Nuerburgring as a toll road, but a toll road with the goal to achieve the highest possible speed and/or the best possible lap time. because of this "race conditions" the insurance wont pay anything by law. Very often in the small prints of the insurance policy the Nuerburgring and/or other racetrack activities are excluded from any insurance services. But all this depends from one insurance company to another.

It took me about 100 rounds in Gran Turismo 6 to actually memorize the place before ever setting foot there. It was truly a bit magical to first drive there, and actually know every corner and bump. However, some things just don't translate well from the game. For example I was shocked by the altitude differences while driving. To be honest the track is very rewarding when you know it well, but I can't imagine having fun without being frozen by fear when not knowing the track well, especially a criminally fast blind corner as Pflanzgarten II.

Great bit of knowledge there. I was wondering how much it all costs. Every time I saw a crash I figured it cost a lot - never mind the inconvenience. There are likely further additions to the bills already mentioned though. What about steep repair bills by the track repair shop and, of course, the costs involved in getting home (and coming back to pick up car etc)

I was doing 60mph because my coilovers had developed a knocking noise so I slowed right down (To the point where driving so slow was actually kind of a hazard due to the closing speed of other cars)... And even at that speed the car instantly lost control and it took me a hundred yards to regain control, and I am very familiar with cars loosing traction. It was like driving on invisible ice. Many many other cars crashed on that same oil, I was lucky enough to get away with it.

@Stolas there are 14 yellow warning lights dotted about the 20km circuit, these lights are km's apart at times. They get lit when an accident is reported. Good advice, since most of accidents happen because of late braking (downhill especially), high speed sections look scary. I drive car with "Torsen Quattro", "slow in, fast out" is usually the best strategy for it anyway and fun. Now for high power RWD, fast out could be dangerous too, apply power when the car is in good balance.

@@ericsson_motorsports How many people spend whole day on the ring during touristenfahrten and how many just does one lap? Secondly, the cost should not be prohibitive for safety. What happens now - everyone are at more risk because track damage is not included into the entry fee (like on all other tracks I know of). In short, I don't think insurance is the answer for casual driver who just wants to drive once on the ring. It probably becomes more useful if you training at quite high level and really pushing your car to the limits. Besides just to be clear 300 euros - that is only third party liability cover.
