I am so happy you made this vid. The price increase is so scary. I worry less people will be able to afford to own horses. Gonna see more and more unwanted horses

I don’t own a horse. But I full lease, and you wouldn’t think it, but full leasing is actually more expensive than owning. At least for me. Because in the short run, yeah, buying is more expensive because of the cost of the actual horse. But in the long run full leasing is way more expensive. Because you have to pay for everything that you would if you owned, but you have the additional cost of the lease, which is quite expensive
@marrmaladee5 ай бұрын
i get the idea of leasing but in the long term is sounds so silly to me. you are basically putting your money into paying for someone else's animal, which is ridiculous to me.

Wow! We currently have 4 horses and we are so lucky!! We pay about $25 for 750# of alfalfa timothy hay from our neighbors. We feed a homemade grain mix and ration balancer. Typically around $18 a month per horse in grain and around $24 per horse in hay. Our pure alfalfa hay is about $6 for a 50# bale. On average we spend about $50 a month per horse as they all get a flake of alfalfa too. Our most expensive horse gets triple crown senior and it’s about $100 a month for his grain. I feel so bad at how much you have to pay for feed!
@maryajaniak2896 Жыл бұрын
Wow, I think you nailed it Stephanie. I had no idea how expensive it is to buy hay. Years back when I had horses, I had a standing order with Agway which was a feed supply company. My feed bill ran about $3K every 6 months and that was for 2 Quarter Horses, one Appaloosa Stud and one Arabian Stud. At that time it was Omelene and 3 wire wrapped Canadian Hay which weighed about 100lbs. and was a mix of alfalfa and some other blend. The bales were green and smelled so fresh. But every 6 months they would deliver my order and place them in the barn on wooden pallets. I was also getting a truckload of wooden shavings as needed. At the time, my fiance' and I were splitting the bill 50/50 since the Arab and Quarter Horse mare were mine and he had the other two. Of course, when we broke up, he left without paying his share of the feed bill but, thank God, I had a very good job and was able to pay it myself. Those were good days. I wouldn't want to be feeding horses today. I watched the Farm on Route 66 and they were saying that hay is $30/bale in northern Arizona and they expect to rise even more. Thank you for sharing. Please excuse me for my long winded comparison. I love how you have set up your farm. Have a good day, stay safe!

If you google it, you will see that Alfalfa can and is grown in N FL. U of F extension has info on it. If you get acreage in N FL you could grow your own. Acreage is sooo much cheaper up here. We had 3 acres in a bigger coastal FL city and one house and small barn. Now we have 2 houses,16 acres of pasture plus woods, 3 ponds, huge barn, lots of outbuildings and it was less than half of what our 3 acre property was. Everything is Ag and much nicer. Rolling hills, good soil, no traffic, way way lower crime, our car insurance dropped by half when we moved up here. It is dead quiet at night, no sirens or gunfire etc like around the big FL cities. If you get inland a little, your hurricane insurance drops way down too.

I do sometimes wish we could go more northern or inland but all mine & mikes family lives in our area & we aren’t ready to be away from them yet! ❤️

The feed stores are taking advantage of everyone ever since the c 19 💩 In CA the local store is still charging $26 for 3 string bale but I went on Craigslist and found its back down to 16 to 18 a bail. I pay $60 for trims.
@SS-rm9ix Жыл бұрын
I’m paying 34 a bale for alfalfa and not getting a discount for buying a ton. That’s 680 a ton not delivered or stacked and a ton lasts me two months for two horses because I feed local for lunch (my barn supplies that). Board is 700 per horse a month x 2 horses. Just for board and forage that comes to a whopping 20,880 a year for the basic necessities. If you add supplements, ferrier, the vet, supplies like shampoo conditioner, fly spray, treats, fuel to haul them and replacing tack it’s closer to 28k ish if you board for two horses. Divide that by 2 = 14k for one horse. If you don’t have land and you can’t afford board or the upkeep I would highly suggest leasing or lessons before you make the commitment. Because it really is a big expensive commitment.

I use premethrin for flys and other bugs. And you can put it directly on your pets(I used it on my dog for fleas one year cuz he had a bad reaction to the flea meds) you just mix it 50/50 with water and put it in a spray pump and I now use it around my yard.
