Toronto is very expensive. As are American cities. I lived in NYC about 10 years ago paid anywhere from $750 in Queens to $925 for a room in Upper Manhattan.... those prices have probably doubled since I moved away in 2016. The average rent for a 1 bedroom in Manhattan just hit $5000 p/month which is insane. Rental prices in Berlin and even Munich compared to a lot of North American cities like LA, Vancouver, Boston, NYC, Chicago, Toronto, etc.. seem very affordable.

The state should be taking care of the housing, it would greatly reduce the cost - as no longer the renters have to pay the multi-million dollar salary of the property owner and his upper managerial staff - and increase the efficiency. I can understand the rents being expensive in USA, which to me is not a Society but a tasteless soup of private ownership for everything, but I cannot grasp how the Germans can not see the benefit of that!

I live in Berlin and it's next to impossible to find an apartment at these prices these days, doubly so if you're a foreigner with no German skills. My suspicion is that a lot of people have older contracts with rent control or live in a Student WG which have really low rental costs (and unfortunately a long wait list). More realistically you're probably looking at least 500 euros as a new renter inside the ring, a lil less outside.

Depends. I have a friend on a temporary rental contract (zwischenmiete) at 750 euros for 4 months in Mitte - Prenzlauerberg (where the video is shot around at). Truth be told I don't know if that's even possible anymore because the problem is that there are way too many people looking for houses. You're looking at least 1000 euros in Mitte, if you're lucky enough to get on a waitlist (area is popular with startup people). If you want to go cheap but cool, best go to Leipzig to be honest. I would move there if I didn't have work commitments here

English version. The problem in Berlin is finding apartments or hygienic WG (shared apartments, with roommates). Quite often to see apartments you have to stand in a line outside the apartment and wait an eternity. Then another person will come, give a pile of cash to the owner and get the apartment. Wasting your whole day and effort.

Wow, as an American these rent prices seem very cheap. I currently pay $550USD for a room in a shared apartment and that is very cheap for where I live and I was lucky to be able to find it (although I do live with 3 other people). Normally I'd expect about $750USD for a room at the very least. I believe that we do tend to have comparatively higher salaries in America though (but not sure if anyone told my employer that!)

700 euros a month for an apartment in central Berlin?? And that's considered expensive? My god, to a Norwegian who pays 850 euros a month for a tiny apartment, this is mindblowing. I can't even find apartments for less than 900 on the market these days

You can use "veräppeln" in the sense the woman did in the video, though probably "jemanden übers Ohr hauen" would be a slightly more common or suitable way of saying "to rip someone off".

Wahnsinn. Sorry for my bad Deutsch.
