HOW MUCH Does It Cost To Replace Timing Chains on an R32 VW Golf Mk2? (DIY vs Garage)

After the head gasket failure on our VW Golf Mk2 with R32 conversion, I chose to change the head gasket and timing chains of our R32 powered Volkswagen Golf Mk2 myself, despite having no experience in doing so.
Why wouldn't I use a garage to do the work? And how much did it cost to do a DIY repair? I answer a bunch of questions that I have received in the hope, giving an honest review on all costings in the hope that it helps people out who need to do timing chains and head gasket on their VR6 too.
In the costings I reveal:
How much I spent on doing the work
How much a garage would have charged (as a bare minumum)
How much it would have cost with suggested add ons
How much it would have cost for an entire engine rebuild - I'll give you a clue, it's eye watering!

Worth mentioning the value of the things you have learned along the way! You wouldn't have any of that if it had been drive in, drive out with a garage

That is true and probably outweighs the cost savings, as I can now use this newfound confidence and knowledge to tackle most jobs on this car, as well as use the principles on the modern cars in our ownership. 😁

Really enjoyed that Ali! Very informative and good to have the breakdown & comparison against garage costs. Funny how people are always quick to comment on "oh you should of done this" and "you should of done that and bought that" but these people don't think about the cost implications so its great to see actually how much this would of cost had you of done just what those folks had told you to :p

I think it's important to realise what a rabbit hole it can potentially be when doing engine work and easy to be drawn in by what may originally seem like a reasonably fair priced garage quote, unaware that additional work perhaps should be done too, making that price not such good value.

The happiest day of a Mk2 Golf owner is the day he buys it and the day he sells it! Unbelievable prices but I'm assuming that's genuine VW parts. I'm a great believer of if it ain't broke don't fix it. Just out of interest did you consider an engine swap for a different VR6?

Haha funnily enough the day we bought the Golf it broke down on the journey home with the original engine in it! So that may not have been such a happy day! We're also far too sentimental and rarely sell cars. Every time I have sold a car I feel overwhelmingly guilty! Parts are expensive yeah, especially on these 6 cylinder lumps with variable valve timing. Parts were VW where possible as I've had awful experiences with pattern parts in the past so I do try and avoid them if I can. When we discovered the fault with the head gasket we were in two minds what to do, swap the engine for an ABF (not another VR6 due to no guarantee on reliability) or sell the car in its entirety, as we felt pretty deflated by it the situation, especially when totting up costings. But that feeling over euphoria when it started for the first time after the work was like nothing I've experienced before.

Most interesting and very enjoyable video. Real world costings are often overlooked yet are necessary when it comes to doing the job, so credit for telling it like it is. Interesting, that the machining costs were probably the least expensive item, relatively speaking. A lot of people would probably expect those to be higher and so swerve them to keep the budget low, which would be a mistake. On costing; what was your budget for sound effects? 😁

It's always the burning question on peoples' lips, so really wanted to break it all down with every scenario covered. As for the sound effect budget, let's just say Avatar doesn't have anything to worry about. 😉

Hi great video, do you have a list of the part numbers needed and where did you purchase the parts from? I will be putting a 3.2 in my Corrado next year and will be doing the timing chain for peace of mind.

Hi there. Thank you for the kind words on the video. Yes I have most, if not all of the part numbers. Gaskets and O-Rings I bought a Victor Reinz Head Gasket+rocket cover kit from Autodoc, plus head bolts, clutch pressure plate bolts, flywheel bolts. Order the rear main seal (crank seal) at the same time from them. The chain kit, which included tensioners came from ProRace Engineering, here: prorace-engineering.co.uk/product/vr6-24v-r32-febi-timing-chain-kit/ For the cam sprocket bolts and intermediate shaft bolt I sourced them from LLL Parts. www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/audi/RDW/ATT/278/1/109/109070 You need the cam bolts x2 (no.19) And intermediate sprocket bolt x1 (no.8) Those are the main parts needed. Anything else, drop a message on here and I'll help best I can. Hope this helps and it goes well!
