I've lived in the Dumaguete area for many years now, nice place to retire but getting crowded, the traffic has doubled in the last 6 years or so. Getting around town in a car is difficult, it's best to live in Dauin, Bacong, Tanjay or maybe Amlan and come to Dumaguete as needed. I have friends who manage their monthly living on as little as $900 and others that spend upwards of $4000 monthly. For me a comfortable budget is between $1,400 to $1,800. Once you get your transportation and a long term visa sorted you can live well on a budget. It takes time to learn where to buy your daily items for the best prices but it will come. The best things in the Philippines are free, the sunshine, mountains, ocean, beach and the friendships you will make. Life is good.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to talk about your expenses, its quite helpful for those of us in the research stage of planning to visit. I'm actually medically retired from the navy at 35 years old. Luckily I've mostly recovered from the physical injuries that led to my discharge. The VA pays me about $3400 a month, which increases with inflation each year. Which I should receive until I die. Right now I'm in the planning stages of visiting the Philippines for about a month and depending on how well that vacation goes, I may try to make it a permanent move. I live in Oklahoma right now, which is one of the cheapest places to live in the USA, so my quality of life at home is decent, the problem is that I feel like I'm just sitting at home waiting to get old and die. Now that I've recovered as well as possible, I think it's time I get out of my comfort zone. Life is about adventure, after all!

I love your comment. I was in the middle of outlining my next video on retirement. And few of the things you just mentioned will be on the next video. I will be recommending for people to come to Philippines for 6months before they make a final decision to retire here permanently. Just the fact that after 1 month you’re just barely scratching the surface of the lifestyle here. For me moving to the Philippines and outside of the world that I knew for 50yrs is a big move…I’m not sure 30days is enough. Maybe a minimum of 3months. I’ve been coming here and living here 6months out of a year for the last 15yrs. I’ve seen the changes …I’ve been to places I would never recommend but overall it’s one of the safest countries I’ve been to. You will love the people here.

You are 100% correct. I just looked it up. The average SS check in the USA at age 62 is $1200 and at age 70 it’s close to $2000. For those of you near the retirement age in the USA. You should have enough money to retire in Dumaguete. Also, most Americans have savings, 401K and pensions. Once again this doesn’t apply to everyone but if you watch your budget you can retire in the Philippines comfortably.

Can someone help me out here.. 54 years old retired from US explored Dumaguete and in my humble opinion found it to be not such a warm welcoming place. Boardwalk not what I expected at all. A few coffee shops and eateries seemed okay but overall seemed like a busy place. Maybe I’m wrong and needed to branch out but the city itself didn’t appeal to me. Wonder if other expats feel the same.

In my opinion, DUMAGUETE is great place for couples but not so great of a place for singles. Few resto and coffee shops in town. Some bars scattered around the city. If you want more action I would recommend Cebu city or Siquijor. And once you find that Filipina then Dumaguete is a great place to bring her to.

Hehe I was waiting to see if you mention "vices," and you did at the end. But I guess if you settle down with a love one that expense will go down. As you can see on my video…my budget is about $800 a month…if you want more. Here are the things I did not list because everyone is different…on a Monthly basis I like to go island hopping:$200 and I like to have a $500 cushion if some emergency happens…so for $1500 a month I’m sure you will live very comfortably here…also I did not throw in my initial investment of buying a scooter for transportation. That cost me about $3700.00 for a new Honda PCX and also the initial deposit of 1st and last month rent plus a security deposit was $375x3=$1125.00…hope that helps you out…so for me it took about $10,000.00 for the first 3months of living in Dumaguete( including buying a new scooter and initial deposit for my rental house) and then it would cost $1500/month to live comfortably after that..but I also know every month I can live comfortably for $800 a month… hope this helped…
