This video was so incredibly helpful. I'm 17 and strongly looking into self-publishing the novel I've been working on for two years, thanks to having heard a thousand different horror stories from some acquaintances who published their books traditionally. Like you said, no one does it perfectly their first time, but I am really trying to explore my options and find out what would work best for me. As a teenager who has no idea where to start, this video pointed out some things I hadn't even considered. Thank you. Now, I'm off to binge your videos.

I became a quadriplegic when I was 23 and started writing my first novel eight months later. Took me eight years to finish it, and got close with one agent who read the entire manuscript, but I eventually gave up after querying a few dozen more, and also opted to not self-publish. I didn't write a single word of fiction for over six years, then finally started on a another novel. More than five years later I still haven't finished it and am in another long writing drought. I'm 44 now, and my point is that I hope you're a more diligent writer than me. You don't want to look back at 20 years wondering what might have been.

You're right on with the copyright. As for the non-registration vs registration distinction, as of a recent Supreme Court case, you can actually no longer file a copyright lawsuit until you've registered the work with the copyright office. Saw a few cases get thrown out this year because of that ruling. But, it's a procedure thing. You don't have to have the work registered at the time it gets infringed, but before you take your case to the court, you'll have to get around to registering it, anyway. So you might as well up front. Plus! When you register your copyrighted work completely changes what types of compensation you can get in court if someone copies your stuff. If they infringe a registered copyrighted work, the copyright holder can go after them for up to $150,000 per infringed work in court. If they infringe when your work isn't registered, then you register it so you can sue them, your damages are limited to pretty much what it would have cost them to pay you to license your work for their purpose. All that aside, there's some movement right now at Congress for more options for smaller artists to enforce their copyright, because the average cost of a copyright lawsuit is upwards of $250k. Yikes.

Instead of Writing Thank you so much for sharing all that information! It’s incredibly helpful and makes me glad that I decided to officially register with the copyright office 👍🏻
@pauligrossinoz
@pauligrossinoz 3 жыл бұрын
This is a special case for the United States only. Here in Australia there is no formal copyright registration system. The copyright owner has full rights immediately and automatically when they create anything, and this is also the way it is in the rest of the developed world. If the US wishes to fix their silly copyright system, all they have to do is _remove_ the requirement to register copyright, and it's done and dusted. Also, the International Copyright Treaty means that somebody in the US violating the copyright of an Australian citizen automatically gets Australian law applied, which becomes very painful - financially - for that idiot because our courts take a very dim view of copyright violations.
@TexanUSMC8089
@TexanUSMC8089 2 жыл бұрын
@@pauligrossinoz The US Copyright system isn't all bad. It's like insurance. When something is filed and officially copyrighted, you have proof and a date. Otherwise, you can have two people right a similar song, but how do you prove who was first and who copied? This way, we have an official documented event that's filed and registered. I can write a song without copyright by mailing a copy to myself and not opening the package. Then it's officially dated by the post office. It's not as strong in court, but it's better than nothing. If you don't copyright your work in Australia, how do you prove the date it was written? Our system doesn't sound so silly to me.
@pauligrossinoz
@pauligrossinoz 2 жыл бұрын
@@TexanUSMC8089 - in the rest of the world, not just Australia, you can simply produce your own dated copies of the earlier revisions. And today, electronic versions are valid in a court. You don't need to post any hard-copies anymore. Server logs can be accessed as necessary. The actual author of the book will be constantly producing new revisions to their manuscripts and sending them to people for review, not the plagiarist, so it's a simple matter for the judge to decide who is lying. No judge is going to believe that a completed, polished manuscript materialised in the first revision. It's basically not ever been a real problem for authors. And the best part is that by International Treaty, any copyright cases are decided in the author's jurisdiction, so if a US person decides to try to steal my manuscript(!), the Australian Judge will make the decision. And obviously they will decide in my favour, because I've already emailed heaps of people my revisions so far. The US system takes a non-issue for authors, and turns it into a barrier with a price tag. It's worse than pointless.

As far as I'm aware, using free KDP ISBN means that Amazon is the publishing house rather than (e.g.) Enchanted Ink, or our own publishing house/LLC. I also know/as far as I'm aware in the UK at least (don't quote me if I'm wrong 🙈) you have to register (when you copyright, pre-publication) your book with 5 different places - Book Depository* British Library Library of Congress (Other 2 I cannot remember off the top of my head). *Only 1 that's mandatory, the other 4 are good to have.

Thank you for this. I received an offer for publishing from a company based out of the UK (I live state-side) and this confirmed for me that the prices they pitched me, along with the equity split they brought, were hugely unfavorable to me. I would actually go ahead and describe them as downright predatory. Best of luck to you with your future books as well.
@bone9jdjkaye
@bone9jdjkaye 2 жыл бұрын
It is totally predatory. Run away from any publisher that charges you even £1 to publish a book. They are usually vanity publishers, and don't care about you or your work so will charge a fortune and then not do much for marketing - it is better to self-publish. Traditional publishers will pay you money, rather than you paying then. money should always flow from the publisher to you, not from you to them

Yes - a copyright exists as long as it is an original idea put down in some kind of physical medium. That is, when you write it as a Word file, and email it to yourself, you have total copyright protection with a date stamp under the law. If you want to file with The Library Of Congress you get a number which can help in the event of a legal dispute.

I find copyright the most confusing thing ever haha I'm pretty sure you're right in the fact that everything you write is copywritten. I'm pretty sure you have to email/mail it to yourself to give it a "timestamp" so to speak. But if you ever want to bring someone to court, you'll have an easier time winning your case if you filed for copyright and paid for it. On my bucket list is to just talk to a legit lawyer about it and really find out whether or not it's worth it to pay.

For instance, if a distributor picks the book up (maybe you have some printed), so who posts it to... let's say Amazon? And should you already have print-on-demand set up from your account, how do they connect? Maybe things aren't that complicated and one can just link the products?

Registering your IP with the US Copyright Cffice has one advantage. But first...the law stipulates that your creative works (writing, broadcast, song, score, etc), is protected the instant that it is created. (Example: Ever watch TV news and it says, "This broadcast is copyrighted?" That's how they do it. So...the advantage is THIS: I'm a composer and an author. Say someone rips off my song and is making money with it. If I want to sue them, a judge will not take my case if I have not registered my song. So...just because your work is copyrighted by law, it does you no good if someone rips you off anyway! So--if you want to take the chance of going without registering your IP, just don't blab it out there, "I don't register my books/music, etc." Because if someone does hear that and rips off your creative works, you likely have no recourse in a court of law. A judge will say, "It's not registered? Then it's not 'legitimate'". or, you won't be taken seriously, etc. OK...there it is.

How much did you spend on actually *marketing* and *promoting* your book, "Song of the Dryad," in addition to the expenses you listed in this video? And how much time and effort did it take you to promote and market that book, and how many copies, if you don't mind me asking, did it sell?? Would you still recommend self-publishing over traditional after your journey?

Did I understand you correctly about your fees for copyediting? I think you mentioned that one factor in determining cost is how much editing has to be done. In other words, if a writer's work needs fewer edits your fee is lower? Please clarify, and thanks for the videos.

I used a copy editor who’s many years seasoned and she was about $850 for 150,000 words. You said 200,000 words would be so much more because it would take so long but copy editors charge by amt of $ per word not by time so a bit confused by your comment.

I really enjoyed your video. It’s one of the best ones I’ve watched. I am writing 30 page reading and writing strategies books for teachers. I am trying to publish them in a series. Where did you take your courses to learn copy editing and proofreading? I would like to take those courses so I understand the process and get rid of my fear of trying any service.

Okay question...So you need different ISBNs for different versions of the same book, but that 1 ISBN would work for multiple copies of the same version? Like say 1st edition, paperback, if like 10 ppl buy it, that same ISBN would be used for those 10 copies?

I believe the rules state you are not allowed to make 'substantial' edits under the same ISBN. Small error correcting like spelling is allowed but adding chapters would not.

Hi Shiva! I'd have to do a sample edit to give you a more appropriate quote, but we'd be looking at about $333 for a novel at 37k words.
