Completely true. 10 pounds if not less. If you could get close enough to a deer and stab him with an arrow in the heart it would kill it. So yes a 30# bow can kill a deer with a well placed shot.

You're not wrong however there is a caveat you overlooked. If the arrow is not traveling as fast, it will have a steeper arc and will take longer to get to the target which can translate to striking a branch ect it also gives the animal more time to get out of the way and could result in poor placement

I found a Barnett youth bow at Walmart for more than half off on clearance and picked it up on a whim. I figured it would be good to target shoot with along with my sons. It was set about 43 lbs from the factory and that felt just fine to me. My buddy hunts and as humbling as it is, I've never even been able to draw his bows back. I'm only 5'-6" and not super strong and the youth bow feels just about right to me. I had to dial it back to about 25 lbs for my wife and oldest son to be able to pull it back but I know I can always crank it back up to the max for myself. I don't see a need for much more, because I'd probably struggle too much with it. This is just for backyard target shooting anyway.

Just the video I needed....The second I clicked I see a Penn State hat, I though ok this guy got that part right he is worth a listen......then you added a PA hunter (my home state) made this extremely informative to me just getting into archery at a later age (40+) having filled many many rifle tags over the years my son is now hunting making rifle season more of a learning time for him, so I wanted a hunt I can call my own. Not that I mind showing him in any way. Its just a Dad thing I have spent many years on my own hunting so now I have to learn just like him. So I figured why not pick up bow hunting for some :me time" in the woods. Grab one of these adjustable compounds like Diamond pro or Bears G2 that way when I am better he gets my old bow to start his learning cycle with. Great stuff!!!!!!!!!!!

good video and info, people need to remember your pass through or penitration relies relies heavily on kinetic energy from arrow weight. people often increase poundage to increase speed but the problem is your only going to gain 7/8 fps for 5 pounds of draw weight, and often require a heavier stiffer arrow. it's not all crank your bow up and call it a day. the biggest factor is your cam design and how fast it can release the energy.

The hand me down PSE I shoot was and still is set at 70. I used to shoot at 55. I could definitely tell the difference in the 15 pounds. I still draw back the 70. I'm a big dude so I'm comfortable with it and I like how much faster the arrow gets to the target at distances. By the way I really enjoy your videos. You have yourself a new subscriber. :)

It's about the broad head not the bow and shot placement so I do agree. I've killed many dear with a 32lb bow and a great two blade broad head. Cuz two blades have the best penetration for low poundage bows.

I haven't been shooting long and the first time I used my compound bow I thought my shoulder was going to cave in at 55ibs. I dropped it to 45 and after 2 weeks of getting my technique right I was able to put the bow up to 70 and I pull that with ease. The let off is enough that it doesn't affect my accuracy. My point is with the correct technique there's no need to be using 35-40pound draw weights and taking the risk of injuring rather than killing.
@MyPlaymaker
@MyPlaymaker 7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your video. I am a heart patient and can no longer pull my old bow. I am thinking of buying an Infinite Edge so I can keep shooting. BTW, I agree with your assessment of bow weights: I've killed four deer with a 40# recurve using the old Bear Razorhead with no insert. I also like your reference to God's creation.

When I first got into the sport I went all out for an 80# setup. I was elk hunting in the west so I justified my decision because of the size of my game. Later I picked up a Martin bow to be my target practice bow, it maxed out at 70#. My groups of practice shots tightened up immensely at 40 and 60 yards. I discovered that I was using so much energy pulling and holding the draw weight that it was negatively effecting my shooting ability. I routinely shoot 65#, 70# bows now as a well placed shot will always be more lethal than a poorly placed more powerful shot.
@vf12497439
@vf12497439 7 жыл бұрын
+Nikolai Kravchenko when I first got into archery hunting draw weight meant faster. Now the bows are so fast that you can choose. I had a Person Spoiler 80# bow with an over draw and shooting a 26 inch arrow I was getting speeds of 250 fps. That was pretty fast in 1990. Now with the newer bows and carbon arrows... Well you know lol

@vf12497439
@vf12497439 7 жыл бұрын
+daimon hellstrom I've had good results, I've often wondered about tree stands but in my area it's tall timber and tight underbrush. You could sit on a good trail for a week and not see an animal and sometimes they might travel that path daily. One Hunter can run a heard of elk out of an area and they might not come back for weeks. Basically the herds are scattered after opening weekend and you might spend several days locating a herd after that. And if a lead cow is killed in a herd, that herd could scatter into two or more small groups. That being said I've wondered but never wanted to stay stationary. Most people on the coast range of Oregon stalk instead of using stands.

Augustus Anagnostou Ah, I see the angle you're coming from. In the trad world (of which I'm certainly no expert) it seems to be at the greatest a 50/50 split between rest shooters and shelf shooters. I shoot a 55lb recurve with a 675 grain arrow going maybe 170fps. It will go through any bone on a whitetail. I have no problem shooting a deer quartering towards me. If you have a heavy arrow, you can get away with even less draw weight. I know several guys that hunt with 40-45lb bows with really heavy arrows and have no problem getting passthroughs on deer even through bone.

jokes aside, I'm pretty sure there are dynamic differences between bows and crossbows, so my question is, if I'm looking for a crossbow that can reasonably take up to large game, what would be the ideal draw weight? not asking for an extream end lol. I may need to make the bow prod, and I also don't want to draw a 175# draw crossbow repeatedly all day. can a 75-100# prod work? I'm not totally sure what differences are between bows and crossbows in terms of draw weigh, and energy of projectiles, but I know the two won't be identical just by nature of the design. I don't need to seige a castle, just drop a deer. so what is the reasonable ranges in the crossbow world?

I use a 180 lpound crossbow. I'm only 13. I use rope cocking aids to pull up the crossbow string to the trigger lock. I pretty sure you will be fine. Pick the bow that appeals to you. Shoot and practice with it. You will do just fine.

What if you made an arrow out of a steel pipe (with the diameter of an regular arrow) and drilled a shit ton of holes in it so that the blood could gush out through the arrow itself? The arrow usually blocks the wound channel and you have to rely on the cutting of the tip to do the killing. With a pipe it would be like an open wound that can't close. I'm guessing it could also channel blood into the lungs if you hit those. Has an arrow like this been made before?

As far as I'm aware no one has ever devised a "swiss cheese" arrow before, although the concept is intriguing. However, in practice, it would be much more lethal for the shooter than for the animal he was trying to harvest. An arrow relies on its ability to transfer the bow's energy equally along the length of its shaft. If there are any weak spots (i.e. holes or cracks) all the momentum and energy gets focused on the weakest spot and the results are catastrophic.

Boss McAsskick in all reality you'd only need a few holes near the bottom and top of the shaft

In Hungary, the law about hunting says 50# draw weight is the minimal for big game hunting for the man. Women don't have the same legal limit. 50# is very sweet. This is not too much for small game and enough for big game and also in competition, you can use it for everything.

Great vid. If you think about it, native Americans have hunted deer and other species of animals for a long time and obviously they didn't have the technology of todays modern bows, arrows or mechanical or even steel razor blade broad heads. Yet, they were able to harvest game successfully. I agree the poundage isn't necessarily what gets the job done, its shot placement.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's I used to hunt with a Hoyt bow set at 85lbs we had to shoot that weight to get any kind of speed for long range shots (50-60 yards). But with the technology of todays bows and the development of carbon arrows thier is no need to shot anything over 65lbs. Unless you are hunting the bears of Alaska or African dangerous game todays bows deliver more than enogh energy to kill anything in the lower 48.

Illinois is 40lb in 29 inches. I shoot 63 and will probably have it up to 65 by October. I'm going to have it at 70 by next year because I'm going moose hunting and I might have to reach out to 50 yards to tag him. Besides my bow is 60 to 70 and I like the heavy draw. It makes shooting more fun if you can only shoot 6. Besides how many shots do you need to kill a deer? 1.
