Why use something not designed for trees over something that is?

He uses tree gaffs.

Tree gaffs for coniferous trees, Pole gaffs are unusable in coniferous but are great for deciduous tree which generally have way thinner bark, with less penetration the more you're pivoting on tree gaffs which messes up your knees in the long run.
