Yeah, but if you start putting semi-slicks on both, the road car is starting to become less of a standard example and slightly more modified for the track, so the comparison isn't as clear. This was a good video anyway but I think the best comparison would be to put the same racing driver in each car - might make the difference even clearer.

Used to work on E46 BMW 330i Stannic group n cars, which were 'standard cars' allowed the interior to be stripped, standard engine (nicely assembled) and drivetrain. Different brakes. In a drag race it would hold a standard M3 manual, but around a track it was no comparison. I think putting a turbo 135 against an old E36 M3 is an advantage to the 135 big time, and yet as you said the tweeks on a race car win hands down. Next time you look at the race car, just look at how much more welding there is on the chassis, in order to help stiffen it. That alone is an eye opener
@KiwiCarLife9 күн бұрын
On the turbo front I’d say it doesn’t make that much of a difference as the M3 had modifications and is a bigger engine. So they probably make about the same amount of torque anyway. Not to mention the fact you’re at high rpm the whole time where the extra torque of the turbo is irrelevant, and the M135i tends to heatsoak making it slower over time.

I've been driving a lot of FWD or AWD in my collection of cars in my past... I never owned RWD car(s) in my collection of owning one before. From your perspective, I'm going to daily and also track it more often so. What's your suggestion? I've been eyeing on 8spd ZF M135i since you own one and was gonna ask how's the reliability after been tracking it or daily it. Any recommendation will be great :)
@KiwiCarLife11 күн бұрын
Hey man BRZ vs M135i is a pretty easy choice imo. The M135i is much faster, has way more overhead for modifications, is already 6 seconds a lap faster on track out of the box and is a way nicer and more dailyable car with heaps of features. BRZ is potentially a little more reliable, but if you do your research into N55 common failure points like the valve cover seal, crank hub guard and making sure you overfill the oil a bit because they don't have a baffled sump, I wouldn't expect you to have any issues. Mine's been reliable

@@KiwiCarLife 100% this is true. A modified street car with decent and not too expensive mods and slicks will get close to the times of the M3 but if you are looking for ultimate performance and times and 10th's matter then you have to spend the money and the time to get there. As in stock M3 vs track M3? Had to work with what I had
@morior302712 күн бұрын
actually for the ammount of tuning the M3 got, I think our winner should be the M135i ! 10 second is nothing! Get sticky tires, stage 1 tuning, remove spare wheel and rear seats, and it will lap the same with not NEAR the mods the M3 got. The torque of the M135i and its better weight distribution, balances the suspension and weight difference... Don't get me wrong, thats all for a single lap, long term of course the track tuned car will do better!

10s is nothing? Okay.

Interesting observations. I agree that the M135 did really well and it's subjective to say a racer is better than a road car but I think it might be a stretch to conclude that with the mods you are suggesting the M135i would get into the 14's. My (educated) guess is that slicks would give 3 seconds per lap and a light tune and lightening another 2-3 seconds. This would put the M135i in at around the 1.19's, maybe 1.18's. The reality is that every 10th of a second below 1.17 is very hard earned and normally requires $1000's in modifications and track tuning to achieve. Of course the best way to loose time is to be a better driver and in this case both cars were very well driven by the same man. Well done Liam and excellent video. Maybe next time we will get you out in an actual race!

Yeah would have to agree with Richard. Even with slick tyres, tune and a bit of weight saving, I still wouldn't expect the M135i to get close to 1:14. That M3 is so light and nimble. You'd have to shed a good 200-300kg and at that point you'd basically be turning the M135i into a race car anyway. 10 seconds is a truck load of time to make up. Think about F1, if you're even 0.5s off the pace you're uncompetitive. Shaving 10 seconds will take more than just better tyres and a bit of weight saving.

@ im an f1 fun myself and looking forward to a very interesting season... maybe i was a little TOO EXCITED for the M135i... :P although if you do turn the M135i into a racecar, it WILL be faster :P

@@crampynzI think he’s talking about vvti crossover just when the car comes into its power band and switches to the high lift cam lobes

@@dingus3182 I was wondering that, but 4AGE didn't have "lift". The 20 valve Silver or Black tops have VVTi, but no lift. Unless he meant 2ZZGE, then yes lift is present.
