While it is an adjustment for drivers, most streetcar riders are happy about the changes to King Street. Pam Seatle tested out the King streetcar route to see how much time commuters are saving thanks to the pilot project.

I'm an occasional driver, I just avoid King Street, there are hundreds of other streets that drivers can use. King Street was an appropriate choice as it carries more riders than the subway in the morning.

Why is it even possible to drive on the tram tracks? This completely undermines the use of the tracks. Also why are there no platform at the stops? People are just exiting on the car lane?
@moho472 Жыл бұрын
I'm 2 years late, but I'll explain. Old Toronto's streets predate the car, which is why our streets are narrow. The streetcar/tram tracks were installed during the late 1800s. Street running was the standard, because there was nothing else in terms of traffic. (Other than the occasional horse, and pedestrians). Because our system hasn't changed in terms of layout, it's impossible to place platforms on certain streets without impeding traffic. You also can't add a barrier on the tram tracks due to limited space. The only viable solution is to heavily restrict car traffic in the downtown core.
@Mgameing12311 ай бұрын
@@moho472 No its the fact that there are already 4 lanes on the road so taking 2 away from cars should give the trams a free flow without cars.
@moho47211 ай бұрын
@@Mgameing123 You can't put barriers on 4 lane concession roads in Old Toronto. Having a single lane in each direction with little to no clearance room would severely affect response times for emergency services. The roads are too narrow. The only solution towards improving streetcar traffic is to reduce the amount of cars on the road. Congestion pricing is a good way of disincentivising traffic.
@Mgameing12311 ай бұрын
@@moho472 Just ban cars on the streetcar tracks then allow emergency vehicles & buses on it. But yeah we also need to reduce the amount of cars.
@moho47211 ай бұрын
@@Mgameing123 It wouldn't work, because vehicles could potentially be trapped in-between two streetcars going in opposite directions. If they tried to go back onto the street and the roads are congested, there's no way the vehicle can pass without cars driving onto the sidewalk. You see barriers on St.Clair, Spadina, and Queen's Quay because the concession roads are wide enough to allow clearances (in the case of Queen's Quay, the streetcar track alignments are all on one side, rather than in the middle). The viable solution is to reduce car traffic, because those roads (and tracks) existed well before the invention of the car

What if they just spent more money and put the streetcars underground. I forget what it's called, but it's like a subterranean railway. I think cities should really think about investing in these subterranean railways, because it creates quick, reliable transit without sacrificing necessary roadways for cars.
@flubsche4 жыл бұрын
Often when they do that, they tend to put fewer stops underground than initially overground, so you have bigger walking distances to the next station. Adding the time needed to go down to the platform and back up, it usually makes the journey longer and less convenient.

Because until 1940 the US and Canada had extensive tram/streetcar networks that were decades old until they were removed, and the term used from the 1870s forward was "streetcar".
