How much faster is the 6.2 than the 5.3?!

In todays video we see the performance difference between the 5.3L and 6.2L! Both trucks are basically identical with the same options and factory equipment aside from he engines. This was a lot of fun testing the trucks. Both trucks are great and will make you happy.

I agree! I was at a Toyota dealership and found my 2017 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3L as a trade in there. Was the only GMC on the lot and I love it. If I was able to choose which engine came in it, I'd have taken the 6.2 but the 5.3 is great as well. Maybe I'll procharge it at some point and make up that extra power lol. But mine came with the 8 speed which is great, has a sunroof, heat/cooled seats, etc. Practically every upgrade you can think of. Big upgrade from the things I've owned before haha. And I'm only 22 so there's plenty of time to upgrade later.

Also very fortunate with my 15’ Denali with the 5.3. I had new 5.3L Silverados in 2008, 2012, and 2016. I bought a new 2019 with a 6.2L. The 6.2L get better mileage than the 3 previous trucks. The required 93 octane for the 6.2 costs 20% more, but it gets about 10% better MPG than the 5.3's. Probably due to the 10 speed transmission.

GREAT video...nicely done. My last two GM trucks had the 5.3L. My new truck (2021 GMC Sierra AT4) has the 6.2L. BIG difference. It also has a CAI, Borla muffler (flapper delete), Pulsar LT, and stock wheels (with one size taller Bridgestone Revo 3 A/T tires). No added weight with the tires. I call my current AT4 "a Corvette with four wheel drive". I didn't buy it for fuel mileage, or being in the slow lane. 91 octane is good. 93 octane is hard to find here in Oklahoma...but, it is def better. Thanks for doing an excellent real world video comparo. The 6.2L (to me) is the way to go and brings a smile to my face every time I wanna drive like Dale Earnhardt Sr.

I had a 2017 Silverado crew cab 4x4 LTZ 6spd auto with the 5.3. It was good. But it always felt like it needed more. I put an cold air intake on, tune & a exhaust system. Better, but still seemed a little lacking.... Now I have another 2017 Silverado crew cab 4x4 LTZ with the 8spd auto & the 6.2l. Much much better overall. It is noticeably faster but surprisingly it gets slightly better fuel economy than the 5.3. I'm guessing the 8 vs 6spd has to help, but it is just a way better experience now. Imo it is a very worthwhile option if your in the market.

Wow, this is very informative. 6 2 is the way to go if you want performance, and, if you can afford it, is the better choice. It performs better, it sounds better, and has a much more visceral experience while going up through the gears. And a 13.86 is an awesome quarter mile time for a truck! Very competitive. Kudos to you for this video. And kudos to Chevrolet for still offering a large displacement V8. And for raising the top speed governor on these trucks to 112 mph on 2021's and after! Yeow!

@@mikerdz75051 The other considerations taken were the driveshaft (OEM is thin with a 115mph critical speed failure) and the transmission is next on the list. Unfortunately GM made the torque converters and transmission pumps very poorly in general so replacing is guaranteed. These components are cheap for GM and will fail as mine has begun to do. I do wish I’d have changed the torque converter earlier on but it’s a gamble if the trans pump fails.

I still can’t see the value in the 6.2. At the end of the day it’s still a truck, not a sports car. You’ll pay more for the engine option and here in eastern PA you’ll pay .80$ more a gallon. It’s not apples to apples. If they both ran in the same fuel, then I’d talk. With the 5.3 truck it weighs just a hair over 5k pounds and has 355hp, that’s not weak like most of you guys are saying.

@@chrishansen7004 the ford 5.0 makes 395 horsepower stock, and the 5.3 makes 355, the difference is negligible. Drive ability for me. I had a 2009 5.3 then a 2012 Denali with the old 6.2 and I had a 15 5.3 and now a 2020 with a 6.2. I prefer the 6.2 just for the feel. I don’t have to be racing around which I don’t it just feels better. Takes less throttle and doesn’t feel as pokey. Also when I go to merge onto the interstate or overtake a slow moving vehicle it feels better to have more power. I agree though technically the 5.3 isn’t really slow it’s actually putting up numbers “sports” cars did years ago.

I got 22.5 mpg (trip average) on an 85 mile 65-70 mph highway trip climbing 1600 ft elevation (~4700 ft-> ~6300ft), passing a few people, full bed, full tank, with wife and 3 kids, and then 28 mpg (trip average) on the way back all on 91 octane. I also pulled an 8,000 lb travel trailer 20 miles (flat no change in elevation) and ended with 16 mpg (trip average) on 87 octane (would have used 91 if I knew I was going to tow). This morning on my way to church 6.5 miles away (flat) my trip average was 24.1 mpg and 25.1 mpg on the way back and there's 7 stop lights, 2 stop signs, and a roundabout with 35 - 50mph speed limits (87 octane). So glad I got the 6.2. I wrestled with getting a truck for years, for fuel economy and practicality reasons, kept trying to cram everything into our SUV that I could get 25 mpg - 30mpg. I try to avoid that happening, but when it is unavoidable, I will run the mix of high/low grades in most of south TX, which results in 91 advertised, but I think it is closer to 90. The oil reports for both current 6.2's wear metals are as expected for the mileage. I know both are likely down on power (some timing pulled), but they have so much more torque than the 5.3; even using 87, there is really no comparison.
