I've been growing a vegetable garden and trying to be more self sufficient. In this video I show the total harvest amounts from this summer and cook lots of food from the garden.

just a small piece of advice for your potatoes next year: washing them actually severely cuts down on how long they store, so if you want to store them for several months through autumn and winter, lay them out to dry for a couple days, but don't brush or wash off the dirt. and try to harvest them after a few days of no rain so that there isn't any wet soil clumping and clinging to the potatoes. Also even green tomatoes can still ripen if you keep them with something that accelerates ripening, like bananas for example. I've heard it works well if you wrap them in newspaper with a banana so that whatever the banana releases is trapped in there. if you ever have green tomatoes fall off the vine again it might be worth a try

I have also been reading about following any brassicas with potatoes in a rotation, cuts the scab down considerably. I hardly had any scab issues this season and last season I planted my fall brassica crops there. Hopefully it will continue to work out. ☺

​@@just_alex @kikikeks2 The banana peel releases ethylene, which is a gaseous plant hormone that induces/regulates the ripening of fruit. So I guess keeping the green unripen tomatoes close to the bananas makes sense. Check out the Wikipedia article "Ethylene (plant hormone)" for more info ;)

We had very wet end of summer and soil here has much clay in it, so it stuck a lot to our potatoes. We also had a lot of rotting of potatoes this year and I was thinking that washing them after harvest would prevent it a t least to some extent. Do you have any other idea how to prevent this in the future? I live in sub-Mediterranean climate and don't have any air conditioned storage space, so the temperatures in storage space are still pretty high (this also impacts potatoes sprouting those long pink/white sprouts while in storage).

Just a tip from an Aussie with a garden, in really hot weather water at night, that way the soil doesn’t dry before the plants have time to drink and often in the morning the soil is still wet to get them through the heat 😊

The people comparing homegrown tomatoes to supermarket ones speak about the big ones. Cherry tomatoes usually come with a pretty hard peel already, but homegrown heirloom tomatoes are soft and juicy and won't survive transport, supermarket tomatoes are hardy at the expense of flavor.

Try buying from a fresh fruit and veg stores they don't store any fresh foods with ice or refrigerated boxes etc.. they wont last as long but the taste is noticeable

Just a small "top tip" if you decide to prepare corn in the future ( that helped me). Chop the tops and bottom ends of the corn off but leave the husk on, you can then microwave the corn ( depending on the size and how many) for about 8-10min and the corn steams itself in its own skin making the flavor a bit better and less time and water wasted. I didn't learn this until I was in my 20's, and of course you don't have to do it...I just thought it may be a good experiment to try in the future. Love watching your videos, so educational and so motivating to watch. ❤

It was such a leap of faith your parents had in you to first let you have your bees and then the garden. I think they enjoyed how special it all was. When you're set up at your new place, you may want to look into doing no-dig gardening (less work, and also less watering, as it mimics what nature does), and also to giving your plants a deep water, and then not watering for a few days. A deep water means the roots will dig further down, which makes them more drought-resistant, and more hearty. The less we pamper the plants, the more hale and hearty they are, which also translates into less diseases and even less pest damage. :)

I've never really known anyone else that's as interested in plants, gardening, propagation, and the way things grow, both separately and together as I am. Love catching your content and learning a few little extra things along the way too. I like learning how to avoid blights, how to do soil amendments, & all that stuff too. I wondered if you'd be interested in doing a pen pal/seed swap, kinda thing with a gal that lives & gardens in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of the U.S.? I've been playing in the dirt & growing things my whole life. I only do the organic, heirloom, sustainable kind of thing too. Be nice to have someone to swap tips, seeds, & spores with once in a blue moon, and to maybe sometimes see the comparison of how things grow & turn out in the seasons of the 2 different regions (between where u are across the pond & my zone 6 region in Eastern KY). Just a tip if you have a lot of tomatoes ripe at the same time try making chutney out of them or tomato sauce pasata!! You can let the chutney do it's curing and usually it will be ready by Christmas. And since you have onions you can make tomato onion chutney. That was you can still enjoy the fruits of your labour till the end of the year 😍😍 tomato onion sauce you can make and keep for a long time and use for basic pasta sauce like Bolognese!! Keeping the ground covered with mulch will make it so you don't need to water as much. It also helps prevent weeds. Saves a lot of time and efforts.

Good to see you back again Alex. My entire family has missed your videos. Your dad's flower gardens are so lovely. I had to keep stopping the video to have a better look at them. What are they going to do now without their Gardening Chef? [1] This is, by far, one of your best Videos. [2] Onion issues, treat with vinegar; water; dish detergent. Solution [1 part V; 3 parts W; 2 drops DD]. Threat every other week. [3] You will need to "NET UP" the melons in the Greenhouse. Even though some places sell it as green garden netting, other places call it bird netting. We just call it "fruit netting" here on the farm. We use the green fruit netting all the time for vertical gardening. We clip them up with "S" hooks. And when we taken them to market we literally leave the nets on so it's easier for the buyers to carry them. They come on a long roll and you just cut them to size. [4] Potatoes look Iron deficient. Might need to add some chelated iron for plants. Especially since they were planted around the tree. [5] Vine crops are best gown on mounds [hills]. They get thicker and hardier. Just be sure to train the vines to grow in 1 direction. [6] At the new place in Bristol, you could ask all your followers to donate £1. each to a Greenhouse fund. You need a proper greenhouse. You are destined to be a homesteader, and maybe grow in the back of the property, with a little bistro in the front. "The Gardening Chef" could be it's name. [7] YES compost is the key to a successful garden. But it's far better to make your own and not buy it. That saves money and the environment all at the same time. [8] The City of Bristol actually has an online list of places that have allotments. I have cousins who have allotments there. [my counsins have them and 1 sent me this link for you if you haven't already applied. (www.bristol.gov.uk/residents/museums-parks-sports-and-culture/allotments-and-gardens/apply-for-an-allotment) ] GREAT VIDEO AGAIN. Well done you! ps.. I'm sending you a recipe for those onions. We like to put corn in the fire in the summertime. Peel back the husk, remove the silk, and pull the husk back over corn. Chuck it in the fire over some hot coals, turning it occasionally. It's fantastic!

I really have enjoyed watching you grow food, you have done your research but you have also have a lovely "bung it in and see what happens" attitude, which is what people starting out in growing fruit and veg need to see more of, and as a regular grower of fruit and veg myself, I often forget and get caught up in more complicated things.
