Original Charterboat Conversion Cost Breakdown: • Converting a Bareboat ...
We set out to buy a cruising catamaran with a budget of $300,000, all-in. We have spent a lot more than that, but Clarity is the boat we always wanted: safe, strong, well-equipped, and fun to sail. This boat will take her crew anywhere, quickly and comfortably. This week we break down the additional upgrades we made since publishing our original cost breakdown a couple years ago.

Wonderful job, you have made Clarity not only a fine yacht but an outstanding home as well. I understand that there are those that think $400k is a lot of money but they forget your $400k home can take you around the world and to places they can only dream of. In the end $400k is nothing compared to the lifetime of experiences you will see and enjoy while doing what you love.

Yes but 400k as a used boat. then 10 percent per year for the life of the boat to maintain. So in 10 years you paid 800k and the boat might be still be worth 300k . But youre house you paid 400k and did nothing in maintenance is still worth a million in 10 years even though its a dump.. my point is oats cost and be ready to spend.

2 things that I learned from this video. 1st. You basically have to be prepared to spend twice as much as the boat sticker brice. $254 thousand dollar boat means you should have at least $500,000 set a side for the boat(I added an extra $100 thousand for the Homer Simpson moments, that I know I would have. 2nd EVERYONE wants a used OWNERS version catamaran, but you guys have proven that there are actually lot of advantages to having a charter version, because you guys EACH have your own play rooms, that you wouldn't be able to get with an owners version.
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the condition of the boat you buy (Clarity was a little rough when we bought her), but after talking to a lot of owners, the basic cruising kit for a 40-50ft cat is about $100-140k. Agree with you wholeheartedly about the owners versions. Don’t get me wrong they are very very nice, but after living aboard for a few years now, I see that they make very little difference to the overall cruising lifestyle, which is about being outside and sailing. The rest of the concerns, like power, water, navigation....those have nothing to do with owner vs charter versions. Thanks for the comment!
@steveturansky9031
@steveturansky9031 4 жыл бұрын
Most cruisers want an owners version for more cabin space and a nice bathroom/dry head area. Also owners versions tend to take less abuse because they are chartered less or not at all. Clarity is a big boat and each cabin and dry head is large, comparatively, so having an owners version is not quite as critical. If it were the typical 40-43 foot cat, having an owners version would make a big difference. You pay for the extra size in everything you do though. Nick has said in the past, get the smallest boat that meets your needs. But they sure have made Clarity into a tremendous cruising platform.

@@steveturansky9031 Oh I agree, I think that with enough love(and research and money), you can turn any boat in to a home, but yeah size and design does make a difference. This is a pretty generic comment about your channel in general, not for any specific video. Retired and quarantined, I found a bunch of other sailing channels for entertainment, and most seem to make sure they have younger bikini clad babes in order to catch one’s attention. Some have some decent info, some not so much, but just letting you how much better your channel feels in how you carry yourselves, what you communicate, the honesty of what your sailing has been like, and all that. Just refreshing, engaging, informative, and a bit encouraging for those of us wondering what the cruising life is all about. Great overviews of mono- vs. cat- from a couple that has experience in both. I’m retired, had kids (and 14 grandkids) so I don’t have deep enough pockets to begin to duplicate your experiences, but thanks for letting us piggy-back on your life a bit, and let us dream. Good job you two. Unfortunately being retired and on fixed income, Patreon support isn’t likely, but I would if I could. Thanks for letting us tag along.

I'd like to know more about why a Sailrite sewing machine isn't your choice all the time. Because I've been drooling at buying a LSZ-1. A way back I bought an entry level Singer and it sucks big time! So now I just get angry when I can't sew what I want and I fantasise of how wonderful everything would be if I only had a Sailrite... Your videos on how to sew things are awesome Megan, a huge inspiration!
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! The Sailrite will work on just about anything, so it really depends on what you're planning on sewing. The thread & needle are too big for most lightweight clothing fabric so I opt for that when sewing clothing. Thicker cotton, say for face masks or pillows, I will use the Sailrite. What do you like to sew?
@everythingexplained
@everythingexplained 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheOKellys I bought the Singer to shorten the straps on a pair of sailing trousers (I got the trousers for $100 off and bought a crappy sewing machine for $70). And since then I've been making tool sacks and fixing outdoor wear for me and my family, but the tool isn't up to the job with heavy fabrics and heavy thread. I've done some curtain and pillow jobs in the house, it could do fine work if I have almost endless patience with it. Nevertheless it is a skill that I really enjoy learning and I'd like to advance in my sewing skills. Thanks for your inspiration and feedback :)

Labor is a major cost in the refit. So, any sort of arbitrary labor estimate would create a more realistic total project cost calculation. So, how many thousands of hours of direct labor on the refit and at what rate would you pay yourself (?) say $10 per hour because it is easy to calculate. Direct labor on refit projects, estimate what, 6,000 (random number) hours in direct labor for Megan and Nick in total. That would take the total boat cost ($400,00 plus $60,000) to $460,000. If you hired someone else to do that labor you did yourself, you would probably have to pay closer to a minimum of $30 per hour (at a minimum) for a hypothetical total costs of $580,000. Why am I doing this? 1. The $400,000 total costs for the boat does not reflect opportunity costs of your labor. 2. The total project costs should be compared to the fair market appraised value of Clarity to indicate how much value the owners' hard work has added to Clarity. Thanks for another excellent video.
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 4 жыл бұрын
Lol. Good point. But my fair market value of labor is closer to $1.35/hr. Lol. We did it this way because we wanted to. More fun than earning to pay someone else to do it....makes a lot of sense for a lot of people to spend more to have something done by someone else. You’ll get no judgement from us on the wisdom of that path!

Clarity is a beautiful boat, which you've turned into a customized "new" boat, with features that Leopard wouldn't have even thought about. This is nothing different from what people do with their houses. Is it an investment? Yes, in yourselves. It was also smart to do these things over time, as you really got to know your boat and understand what you wanted. I just did the same kind of restoration to a 50' MY, and the one thing I know is that as long as the hull(s) is sound, everything else can be repaired, replaced, or redesigned. I'm looking forward to following in your footsteps upon retirement in 3-5. And 2.4 KW's of solar... maybe in 3-5, electric engines?

It always looks like money solves all problems, but having done this with fancy boats and not so fancy boats, I can tell you that the "problems to be solved" in outfitting a boat are mostly self-invented. What one thinks one needs for a comfortable existence afloat and what one actually needs are two very very different things. What we have done with Clarity is pretty extreme. I hope we don't make it look like this kind of setup (and expenditure) is required to cruise happily....because that's simply not the case. Small, safe, simple boats are amazing fun, and a lot less work to maintain.

I do wonder what fair market value would be for Clarity should you want to sell it? A friend of ours just sold their vacation property, they paid $600K and sold it for just over $300K. I'm not sure if they managed to get that much back in a tax shelter as we just learned when we sold our vacation property and didn't see any savings. At least we are left with our memories which most would argue are priceless. 🤔😃I am a pragmatist when it comes to stuff like this so my opinion is usually not the majority. 😁Happy y'all are enjoying the Oregon coast and being with your family! 🥳Next cruising season will definitely be an interesting one. 😐

Based on what we are hearing others are paying for L46s right now, somewhere in the mid-300s I would suspect. Maybe high 300s. A boat is only ever what someone is willing to pay for it. Thank you both for sharing your wealth of information! While we love watching Vaga, Delos or Evans, you two are our go to for overall boat information, maintenance and tips - especially now that we are planning on buying a cat! I had a question for Meghan (as I understand she is in charge of this part of boat maintenance ;)) that maybe warrants a video: "How do you keep your boat ship shape in terms of cleaning?" I know you said you love natural products like vinegar and baking soda - what do you use each for?

Congratulations and thank you for watching, so happy we can help you get out here! Great question about cleaning maybe I should do a little segment about it. I basically use a mild dish soap with hot water for the floors (ideally 1x week) and then simple green diluted for stove, counters and bathrooms. Baking soda for the showers and diluted vinegar for the headliners (mold). Bar Keepers friend is great on bathrooms, galley sink, stove and fridge too. Good luck with everything hope we see you out here!

@@TheOKellys Thank you for the super fast reply! :) A video would be amazing- I bet you think it's so simple but when you start speaking about it you might realise there is more to it. For the baking soda: how do you apply it? Just like Cif or something, in powder form? For Vinegar: how often do you do it and is it safe for most surfaces? Also, how do you wash your upholstery? Take it off and wash it or do you have some sort of steamer (perhaps you had one before and can recommend one for upholstery that cannot be removed)?

Thanks for the update, ex charter boats will be a money pit in general but do you think the “crewed version “ of the leopard from moorings would be any less of a money pit because it has been run and “maintained “ by a professional crew?
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 4 жыл бұрын
Charterboats are "fleet vehicles." They are generally well maintained, as they don't make money when they are not working. However, they do see a lot more cosmetic abuse from credit card captains who don't know how to handle them in tight quarters. Crewed boats are a different ball of wax altogether. A knowledgable captain at the helm who can handle the boat without bumping into things makes for a much shinier boat. And to be clear, all boats are "money pits": new boats just as much as old boats. Anyone who argues that point simply doesn't understand how boats wear, get maintained, or depreciate. And if you are in any way concerned about whether a boat is a smart financial decision or not, do yourself a favor and take up a different hobby...this is not the right endeavor for you. In fact, complainers should avoid this activity at all costs.

So let's assume a guy and his gal are going to do something similar and buy a Leopard or even a HEAVY LAGOON (*gasp) from a Charter company. Once I deal with those pirates and my survey work is identified, how long would I need to assume I need to plan for before I could be back in the water and cruising? I've seen your videos and you are great for sharing this detail and going full kimono for us, but given I would be essentially moving to the boat for part of the year, the timing is interesting too. Thanks.
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks first of all! Appreciate that. Re how much time? Lot of factors involved. But with stuff you see on our boat, it was six weeks drydock St Maarten, another six weeks in the water, then a handful of big projects over the next year and a half totaling another six to eight weeks. And then every year, at least a month of full time maintenance/projects.

Great video. Perhaps you could add on your podcast what were the make or break features of Clarity when you first bought her. For example, what were her engine hours (total and per year) and was that scary? As a charter boat they must have been high. If someone is thinking of buying an ex-charter boat what should they be wary of and what seems tolerable?
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 4 жыл бұрын
What a great idea for a video. Low engine hours is not necessarily a good thing...boats that don’t get used much are the ones that have more problems. Most charter boats, contrary to popular belief, are actually fairly well taken care of...these are a lot like “fleet vehicles” in that if they aren’t working, they don’t make money. So they get maintained. However, charterboats do get more abuse in terms of dock dings, furniture scrapes, etc. I’m generalizing of course, as all boats come with unique histories, like people do. Personally, I’d never buy any boat with less than 250 hours per year, and never one sitting for more than a year. Most of these Yanmars are good for 10000 hours or even more if they are treated well. My limit on buying a used boat would be engine time of about 7000 hours. But I’ve got more details to share....time to plan a video! Thanks.

A great video - like always 🙄. I would think some viewers might not understand what you have actually saved compared to buying a factory built Leopard. You have spent in my opinion your money very wisely, and in the things you actually wanted, and in the process you have increased the value of Clarity not just for you. A factory Leopard will still miss some of these options which are available only as after market additions. You should perhaps drive this point of savings further. To get into the water anyone is going to spend money. The question is how to do it wisely and to suit your needs. Changing tack here: your eyes seem to be doing better by the way.

I like that you made the bed king size, but where do you put your stuff? My bedside drawer has pills - prescription and over the counter, antacid etc - reading glasses, torch, plus on top lamp, clock radio, chargers, evening cocoa spot, middle of the night beverage, ear plugs etc. There's probably more, but that's from memory.

I noticed you have a soda stream and are carrying a lot of their small and over priced cartridges. I switched to a single 20# cylinder and it is so much more convenient and less expensive. One 20# cylinder costs $21 and has about 21 times the co2. It may be worth looking into for your boat?
@clarkharms
@clarkharms 2 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention there is a initial cost to set up of about $300 but that is mostly for the cylinder core charge which is refundable. I buried the cylinder in a cabinet void so it is out of sight.

Great video but could you do one on your average boat speed in different wind conditions. I know this is a complex question with many variables, however it would be nice to know what the realistic speeds a cruising cat can do compared with a performance cat. For instance in typical downwind sailing, what percentage of wind speed do you make in light, medium and high winds bearing in mind that your cat is set up for living not racing and so you added a realistic amount of weight. It's the real world values that I think people would find interesting. In the meanwhile, keep on enjoying your life and making videos!
