How much gold did we get with this .. MAGNET!?

A large gold mining operation in the Quesnel area of British Columbia, run by my buddy Tyler, uses a magnet in their clean up sluice to prevent the magnetic black sands from plugging the sluice. Tyler gave me a sample of these black sands removed with the magnet to see how much gold got caught up with the black sands. Check out these results.
And as a side note, Tyler usually goes through these black sands to recover the gold. It is not lost. And NO! gold is not magnetic.

Well done, you're re-invented the CleanGold sluice system. That one uses a line of magnets to trap black sand, which then is used to trap gold. It does this astonishingly well, even better than the old mercury amalgamation method and is being touted as a way to stop people using mercury quite so much.

Actually, this device is a much scaled down replica of the electro-magnetic ore separator used in iron mining since before 1900. Exact same concept of alternating polarity magnets in the core of a spinning drum. Of course, in this case, the prize is in what was "waste" in the ore separator.

Suggestion - Re some of the output spilling on the table. Why not use quart jars and adjust height of top of jar up a bit so the blue neck outputs are farther in each jar. It seems like they would have less chance of bouncing out on their way to bottom of jar. You could also use a canning ring to hold a paper coffee filter around top of jar with center area cut out. In other words, just using the paper like an additional funnel for anything that tried to bounce.

I just checked the math on the difference between pyrite and gold for their mass density. They are 19.3g per cc for gold, and a mere ~5g per cc for pyrite. With this knowledge it's quite easy to see how that tiny amount of pyrite doesn't effect the total in any significant way when Dealing with such a small amount. Now, if you had a ton of mixed material like that than yeah, I would try to remove the pyrite.
@Danhurd
@Danhurd Жыл бұрын
It also depends on how clean you need the gold for the end result too. I mix this back into paydirt, so having some pyrite in there does not really matter.

i picked up a bunch of black sand off the beach with a magnet. grass will respond to a dressing off iron plus i experiment with making weights n stuff. there already is some iron in our garden soil at all levels- brought in or naturally but not black sand (rhode island coast). after 20 years messing with this stuff i learn there is actually gold in it. maybe in the summer ill check out the 30lbs or so i have in the garage or the tons of it 1/2 a mile away on the beach. sorry for using freedom units i left 🇬🇧 before they compltely went over to metric.

Hi Dan! Love the content and positive energy! Had a thought.. I’ve never panned gold, but watching you tap the pan to bring the gold to the top I wondered… would a small hand help vibrator accomplish that task faster instead of tapping the pan? Just a random thought
