I have fond memories of a renting a Gen 3 Prius in New Mexico, it was awesome on gas. Got to drive it from Albuquerque towards Gallup, then up to Santa Fe (Where the LX press drive was) and back around the Duke City. Still think the styling was way better executed than the current one while still being quirky but non-descript. For intensive purposes, I think if I HAD to buy one, I would just get the XLE for the moonroof.

I bought a 2013 prius for car camping. When you lay down the back seats it lays almost flat, perfect for sleeping in your car. The gen 4 prius the seats don't lay as flat. Also it's lower to the ground compared to the gen 3. So if you go a little off roading you will scratch all the trim panels.

I car camped in my 2013, traded it in with 257000 miles on it and no problems for a 2018 prius. I wasn't easy on it either, but did get it serviced regularly. 70 to 75 mph fully loaded all through out the west. I tent camped though, didn't sleep in it. Still averaged 46 mpg. My 2018 has 100000 on it fully loaded I average 52 or more depending on temperature. Couldn't afford to travel as much as I do if I had to use my 2009 f150 4dr 4wd at 12 mpg lol My seats fold flat, I take the headrests off. Large toggle switches work so well. The acceleration is definitely quicker and more effortless. The engine barely hums when it’s on and it feels way more electrified at all speeds. Wait what? There’s cars with solar powered roofs? How good can it recharge?

I saw this before he commented but he said that it’s pretty much worthless BUT that was in 2012. I look forward to seeing chicks come over with cracked trunks like they come through with cracked cell phones.

Solar grids inside the sunroof glass really aren’t anything new, they’ve just never really caught on. The Mazda 929 for example had a solar sunroof available and that was all the way back in 1992.

Ok but what about now

@@Mike01029 - No idea, but the fact that you and I both have no idea which cars today have a solar roof or not demonstrates that they’re just not that useful or popular.

If memory serves the solar roof was just to recharge the classic 12 volt battery and also run the fan to keep the cabin somewhat cool.

In 2022 is there any excuse to not get a hybrid?
@alejandronopasanada53023 жыл бұрын
You say as they scrape the SNOW(AWD) past my neighbors house where they have a paper weight useless SUV hybrid that had the battery just going out and it’s more to replace it than the car is worth so it’s just sitting there next to the new car. That was literally happening as I read your comment. I really want a solution and I’m waiting on Lexus’ version of the solterra before I make a move. Hopefully it will get good mileage and have Subarus AWD with Toyota wheel vectoring 🤞🏾
@hiwrenhere3 жыл бұрын
There's a few reasons. One being climate. If you live in a rather cold environment with a hybrid or ev that doesn't keep itself warm. The second being climate again, living up in the mountains and needing real power or AWD like some of my friends. The third is costs I suppose. If you can only afford a 5k car then getting a hybrid in that price range is a recipe for disaster. But otherwise, no! Hybrids are great for folks who don't have the infrastructure or lifestyle for charging!
@micahkoenig84723 жыл бұрын
@@hiwrenhere I get what you are saying, but I think of the excuse are niche. I also think more people envision their daily conditions are mountains when most of the times they are molehills. More recent electric cars should be using heat pumps rather than electric heat, so I would imagine that only budget hybrids would still suffer here. For the third point, yeah I think I saw it costs the mechanics at least a grand to replace a Prius battery with a refurbished battery. anecdotally the people I know who have bought Toyota hybrids have all had a good experience with the engines well into the 100,000+ miles range.
@hiwrenhere3 жыл бұрын
@@micahkoenig8472 oh I completely agree, especially the mole Hill comment 🤣 I also agree with the reliability, just with the exception of reliability of the third gen Prius. I've spoken with a lot of owners who have had to replace their head gasket (myself included) I absolutely agree that the folks who have complaints with hybrids and ev because of their commute are very very very much niche as you said!

I agree the 2012 Prius is the best looking inside and out. With the sheet panel changes they have made to the 2022 model, the car looks less like a clown car but still butt ugly. The next model change is going to have to hit it out of the park to make up for the 2016 fiasco styling.
@drivedb73 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I’ve just never cared for the 3rd gen Prius. If I had to find something nice to say about it, at least the 12v battery is easier to replace than in the earlier models. Regarding the 4th gen, Toyota somehow managed to make it look even worse after the refresh than it did before. All in all, if I was FORCED to buy a Prius, I’d hold my nose and begrudgingly drive away in a 2nd gen.
@tails3003 жыл бұрын
Or you could buy a Corolla, Camry or RAV4 hybrid and be inconspicuous, since they don’t look any different to there gasoline counterparts.

I have ridden in 2 Priuses (my sister has owned a gen 2 and a gen 3) and finally drove a hybrid Avalon that I am kicking myself for not buying, and as ugly/strange/weird as I sometimes think a Prius looks...I actually thought the front end of the 2015 Avalon that I drove was totally yuck. Yet, it managed unbelievable mpg numbers for such a large car.

2022 Prius sacrifice space to make it smaller than 2012. The room in passenger and driver, as well as cargo space is much smaller than 2012. The sacrifice of weight is to gain a bit more MPG.

What you analyzed are pure amenities on the superficial level. Notice that gen 4 is way superior than gen 3 in mechanics. The single biggest reason of hybrid battery death in gen 3 is that the batter filter is dirty and most people don’t clean it and don’t even know it exists. In gen 4, it becomes super easy to access that battery filter to clean it or change the filter altogether

I have de 2012. The technology is not much different but… man i hate my oldschool dated green dashboard lights. You would think that they already had l.e.d colored dashboard lights.. and most cars had in that time. But the prius ( the car that is trying to be futuristic) still had that oldschool 80s 90s weak green digital dashboard light. And speedometer. Like it’s a 1987 mazda 626. That’s the only think I don’t like . Everything else is perfect.
