Well, I'll say. I've been doing the grain/hay thing backwards. My boys eat their grain while I cut strings and sort and shake out their hay, and then when the grain's gone they mosey over to the hay. What you said makes sense. I'll reverse that starting today and if they pitch a little horsey hissy fit because they want their grain, I'm giving them Buddy's e-mail. (Buddy would be sympathetic...Tanner'd tell them to shut up). :)

Can you imagine the disclaimer a channel would have to put up if you had a tv show? "The views expressed by Buddy and Mr. T, and those of Mr. Gore do not necessarily reflect the views of A&E. We at A&E LIKE the color pink...from magenta to mauve and all the shades inbetween, we think if a horsey product is pink that means it's of good quality and will be good for your horse, we like women and think they are the smartest EVER, we LOVE Obama, are all about big government, entitlements, gun regulations, gun control....shoot...we'd love to see guns in the hands of private citizens outlawed, we are for rodeos, horse racing, barrel racing, dressage, shoes, whips, bits, spurs, stalls, and support those industries....because they make a ton of money. We've tried to get Mr. Gore to wear something besides a ball cap, sunglasses, HIS old jeans and a sweatshirt....you know, so we could get some dinero from the clothing manufacturer, but he won't, and we can't, much to our chagrin, make him. So we apologize to those of you who are disappointed he doesn't look like a "cowboy". We hate that he won't endorse carrot sticks or any other gimmicky items, because we'd like to sell them on our website, and are dismayed that he won't even consider it. Warning: there may be some graphic footage. Buddy will be corrected, either by Tanner, or Mr. Gore, and when he pouts, it makes us want to cry. You will see chickens in cages, caught by their own eggs, and innocent armadillos shot simply trying to cross Mr. Gore's property, you may see a horse on a bridge, if this will affect your children, please have them leave the room....we will give you a 10 second delay, there will be hoses across their backs, and water sprayed in their faces. We'd like to apologize to the makers of Mane & Tail Horsey Shampoo, he doesn't like soap on his horses and "washes" them with just water. If you are offended by dirt and mud, you may want to turn the channel. His horses are sometimes dirty, and although it's hard to believe, he's alright with that. If you believe plastic toys should never be abused by being placed outside in the elements, please turn the channel....the man's got a rubber duckie in a watering trough. We've tried to keep him on script, but he chases every rabbit he sees, and he's given the director an ulcer. In other words, watch this program at your own risk." But, in all seriousness, I'd watch. I'd even upgrade my subscription, and that's saying a lot because I'm known as a VERY frugal person. I squeeze each dollar until it squeaks. :)

Thanks for the tip on when to feed grain vs. hay. I live on a brome field but there’s snow everywhere so I put grain In Their feeders first and the brome in their racks. They wolf the rolled oats and alfalfa pellets first and then nibble through the hay. I’m going to change that up and always give brome first. Then alfalfa and rolled oats as a mid afternoon snack.

And the part about a blanket, I used to use a blanket more but I started listening to my horse and she normally does not want the blanket even if it gets in the 20's or lower at night. If she wants it I put it on if she tries to walk away or pull it off we don't use it. But I take it off first thing in the morning before the sun comes up if I do use it.

Mr T has that long hair to trap a layer of air as insulation. He has some control over the amount of insulation he has by raising or flattening his hair. He only needs to have some place to get out of the wind (a run-in shed with the opening away from prevailing winds, the side of a barn, a hedge or stand of trees). Horses only need blankets if you clip all that hair off them. Then you have to replace that hair with a blanket when a horse would raise his hair to increase his insulation and you must remove this insulating layer when he would. So much easier to let him take care of his own blanket. All horses must have access to good quality hay - not grain, to fuel their internal furnace to heat that insulating layer, 24 hours a day. it's okay to feed them twice a day, as long as what they are given each time is the equivalent to or more than the same amount they would consume having free choice - that is the best blanket money can buy. we always baled our own hay and the quality was a known factor. it never occurred to me that you might purchase hay that would have been put up wet to turn moldy or more likely burn the barn down or that it may contain foreign objects like dead birds etc. should I ever find myself in that position, I will be sure to check out, shake out the flakes to be sure of what my animals are getting! Thanks for the heads-up

Thanks, glad you shared this - I think they did a good interview - and had some valid points. Some people think I hate them or think they are bad, I did not like what I saw on the clip, I never knew what happened before or afterwards, but what I saw I thought it was confusing at best and mean at worst, but I did not like it - speaking for the horse not for Parelli. I have gotten lots of hate mail for saying bad things and gotten lots of love mail from people that hate Parelli - the goal is to make it better for horses, no one is perfect and no should be judged by their worst moment - I try not to attack other horse people unless I think a horse is getting a bad deal - in the clip I saw I thought the horse was getting a bad deal so I said my piece.

Your welcome and I think they did good in the interview too but she never apologized in the video about her actions on what she did to the horse. She was just being mean to this poor blind horse who has never been outside which is also sad. I am not fan of them but I don't hate them maybe I will do the 7 games with my own horse or mule somday. You mentioned before that you met Pat at a expo,right? People need to use common sense, which ain't common anymore. toodles debs from Texas.

I always shake the hay out for the horses instead of just throwing them just a flake, but what I quite don't understand is why shake the bale hay out when you or any one for that matter uses it, but when it comes to rolled hay it don't get shaken out, they have to eat clumps of it. I may be missing something IDK.
@ThinkLikeAHorse11 жыл бұрын
Yea right, that is why I am not a fan of round bales since it is not as natural as hay but it seem that round bales have hay rolled in layers and it seems to cum out different than pressure packed bales, but rounds bales sit in the elements, rain, snow, heat, sun and that breaks down the hay and molds which is another reason I am not a fan, but it that is all you have or all the horses have they will eat it.

My horse has half her pasture in Rye and the other in just normal dry grass. My farrier told me just to let her on for a few hours a day to keep from foundering from the grass. Is that true? I mean, if she has a choice between dry, rye, and hay. Would she stop eating rye when she gets her fill? I'm a little scared to let her stay down there all the time.
@ThinkLikeAHorse11 жыл бұрын
IT Depends? If you feed Alfalfa and Grass, most horses will eat Alfalfa - so giving a choice if you make one choice bad does not mean just giving a choice is good. Think like a horse, in nature they move, walk and cover 25 miles a day, no time to stand in one lush pasture bored and eat all day, they have move, walk, find water and avoid predators, so when we lock them up and all they do is eat, they do not know that eating just lush available pasture is bad for them. That is why you want more grass hay available in pasture so they can grass without negative affects, if you plant rich, fertilized food a horse will eat too much. It is like saying I put a bag of grain out in the pasture with 10 bales of alfalfa and 10 bales of grass hay, so the horse has a choice it must be OK - NO. If you provide BAD choices then choice is NOT good. RE: lunanightwolf 1 hour ago My horse has half her pasture in Rye and the other in just normal dry grass. Arrow Eyraud I'm curious to know.... I live inside central MN and we don't have a run in for our horses.... Never have and we've had horses for the past 20 to 30 years that is between my dad and his brothers..... They do have cover from the wind (the woods and a hill but also there is an old trailer house out there for them) here's my dilemma.... My father and I cannot seem to even come to any sort of an understanding of anything.... Funds are real right now and the hay we've been getting them is not the best sometimes thru even have to go a day or 2 w/o.... I believe that, taking into consideration the arctic like weather we've been having this year, they need some sort of run in put up at least and he doesn't.... We have enough or could easily get our hands on the materials to do it but he just seems to fight me on it EVERY SINGLE time I bring it up....idk weekday to do..... Any words of advice??

I hear ya, I live in Iceland, and of course we only have Icelandic horses that can handle temp below 0F (-18C) easy. It can often get colder than that. NEVER have I seen one of these silly blankets. They don't need it. If they have shelter, ample food and clean water (not frozen, that's another thing to worry about), they'll be just fine!! We never see horses freeze to death during the winter unless one of the above is missing, meaning the horse is severely neglected.
@dinks200018 жыл бұрын
Imagine someone telling you that your horse is losing weight because it's cold.. even though you know there isn't enough feed in the paddock, and the feed you manage to give him just isn't enough. I clipped my horse (trace clip) for the winter, so I rugged him appropriately. But nothing helps when you are not allowed to simply put down lots of good hay and walk away. Not allowed to do it, because my horse is in a small herd and they would steal his food. I've been told a round bale is on its way.. I've been waiting for a month or more and it still isn't there. I'll be broke by the time it gets there, because the only way to keep my horse from losing any more weight is to feed him hard feed twice per day - and the owners charge something like $7 - 10 per day for this service. I don't like it one bit. Not only is it costly, but my horse doesn't get the roughage he actually needs. Just a miserable situation.
