This is fascinating. I have a music degree and there was a time in my life, about 25 years ago, when I seriously considered doing this for a career, but in the area I live it can be *really* tough to carve out a living like this so I decided to take a different path. Thanks for making this - I can only imagine - uncomfortable video. As I live and gig around Belgium, I always wondered how the rates compared to the USA and it seems very similar actually for the wedding/corporate type of gig. Great to see you educate people about some basics as a self-employed musician too, I saw some clips of your clinic on insta. It always baffles me how young musicians can brag about fees to each other without mentioning the context (rehearsals leading up etc.) and costs it brings with it, conveniently ignoring taxes. This video is really important. Understanding exactly how much you could earn during a random week helps musicians make informed decisions. I had to learn this the hard way and for that reason music is still my “side hustle”. That said, the most important thing in my opinion are those in between moments. They really make it fun to be a musician. Performing the music for me has always been a small part of what makes it fun. For me it’s the getting together with friends and fellow musicians, learning something new and/or rehearsing something fun whilst networking that’s invaluable and I’m glad you showed that part. Great video and keep up to good work.

Hi there, really enjoy watching your videos, especially seeing how things go before and after performances. The performances are great too, but it's neat seeing how things work. Also, want to point out about what seems like a misunderstanding on standard mileage. That is a tax deduction, key point being that a deduction reduces how much tax is paid on one's income. It is NOT an actual cost paid anywhere, it is just a mathematical variable in tax calculations that, in theory, should help folks pay less taxes overall, and otherwise streamline the tracking of business vehicle use as it relates to expenses. So, using your example in the video $425 income - $84.42 standard mileage deduction = $340.58 of income that will then be taxed. Hope that helped a little! Like you also say in the video, always wise to seek out a CPA to better understand the finer details of such things! EDIT: You did get it correct in the video when you said you pay taxes on the resulting amount, so I think you have it down, just got the details a little crossed.
@FoolishFrankie3 ай бұрын
Hey thanks so much for the kind words!! Sorry if I was confusing in the video - I do understand that mileage is not a cost, but putting gas in my car + maintenance is but I'm not allowed to expense it from my business so it's not shown in the video. I figured it was just easier to explain everything by what my net income on my tax return would show. Definitely smart to trust a real CPA and not me LOL

@@FoolishFrankie Ah, I see where you are coming from now, that makes a lot of sense to share it that way! More unsolicited kind words: I always figured it must require one to be quite busy to make it as a musician, and I got that impression from the many earlier videos I've watched but this one definitely reveals it more evidently. That said, I'm really hoping you continue to find success, and I think you will with how reflective you are in the moments when mistakes are made, or afterwards looking for ways to improve, and just being a great musician and individual in the company of others. All of that is a long way to say, success is in your future, and looking forward to more of what you have to share, whether on KZbin or otherwise!

This is a great video. Coming from a fellow 26yr-old musician, the tax strategy I use is super different than what you propose (I think both approaches have merit). I withhold nothing in preparation for taxes each month, and instead invest any surplus I make into index funds and ETFs. Any additional cash I make from January thru March then goes to paying for the previous year’s taxes. That way, I’m able to invest extra cash 9 months out or the year, and it’s worked out great so far. I’d be more than happy to rap about it if you’d like to know more.

@@FoolishFrankie I have. It works out, as I have a mix of W2 and 1099 income. I deduct enough on my w2 payout to offset the 1099 quarterly non-payment penalty. This strategy wouldn’t work for someone only making 1099

As someone not in the industry getting to watch your experience and your insights from the inside are really interesting! I find it weird that the gigs dont cover parking or arrange parking for you, specially with a lot of gear you don't really get to not take your car. Love your transparency dude, thanks for sharing!

8 days a week? It's been a hard days night 😜 This is a superb documentary series, and don't assume it's only of interest to aspiring musicians. Better than a lot of TV and film producers work, imo - bravo!

Not a musician (might be too late because I'm old) but this is so interesting to watch. Also it seems like your grinding hard and enjoying the journey at the same time (correct me if I'm wrong) , that's where I want to be eventually, low stress high enjoyment career/ life

OK I spoke too soon, there are stress involved in it too I guess

I'd have to say this was very cool. You've definitely improved from when you first started posting (no offense). It's fun especially when you 'play with joy.' Interesting also as this is the music scene that's not Nashville, Austin etc. Very much enjoy the gig vlogs. My wife is woodwind...gotta buy some merch. Keep going.
