Ever wonder how much a veterinarian makes? In this episode I'm going to tell you how much I made each step of the way in my training. Get ready to be.....surprised. I enjoy talking about this sort of thing because in our field basically no one talks about it and I think it is very important to know ahead of time what to expect if you embark on this career path. Happy to discuss anything in the comments. Please like and subscribe and leave a comment if you so desire!

I currently work in a vet clinic as a receptionist and assistant, and I'm a vet tech student. The best way that people can support veterinary staff is by not fighting about prices constantly. My clinic raised our prices by 30% and cut all discounts and that money solely went toward raises for staff
@rhiannn3416
@rhiannn3416 2 жыл бұрын
That's great! I really hate it when clients try to hackle prices. That's not how it works. Medications, surgery, equipment all costs money. As a human patient you'd be paying a similar amount, if not more, only in most countries the majority of it is covered by whatever healthcare system your government has. And then the clients proceed to berrate the vets, receptionists, nurses and other staff for not caring, only going in to the industry for the money, etc. and all of it simply couldn't be farther from the truth.

Very insightful information Dr.Cellini thank you! As a rising 4th year vet student, I'm having a lot of thoughts on which specialty to pursue post-vet school. I've heard that it's pretty difficult for non-surgical specialties (with exception to radiologists) to make more than a surgical specialty, how true is this? Like for instance a busy internist vs a busy neurologist/surgeon.
@DVMCellini
@DVMCellini 3 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I'd say that's true. You're paid based on what you're doing procedure or diagnostic wise. Unfortunately the reality is that you're paid as a % of what you do. You do more (or do more expensive diagnostics/treatments), you're paid more. Simple as that.

Sheeesh...Let me just say, from where I'm from (Finland) all schooling is free and students don't usually have any debt after graduating (unless they need the money for living expenses). UK vet student here: What gets me is the foreign students we get. US and Canadian students coming here already need their first degree so they have however much debt from that, but on top of that my university charges $52,000 per year for overseas vet students for tuition (domestic is $12,500), plus London living expenses (an easy extra $25,000 a year). They can do the accelerated course so can do it in 4 years, so our overseas students are likely ending up with like $450,000 in debt? My university is the best vet school in the world (#flex), but youch. I'm "only" going to have $161,000 debt when I graduate.

I went to Edinburgh, my first degree in the US was paid for by an athletic scholarship. I had a choice of going to US or UK schools. I chose Edinburgh because the tuition was fixed for the entire program (US school tuitions go up ~1-2k each year usually) and wasn't *much* more than my out of state US options any way. I chose it because Edinburgh's program just fit best for me by far, so the slightly larger amount of debt was worth it to me. It also worked to my advantage because the last couple years my tuition dropped by about 8k in US dollars due to Brexit and the pound's value dropping, but that was just sheer luck for me financially. Anyway, I know that's not the case for everybody, but all of the North American students in my class had their reasons for choosing the UK. Some didn't get into US schools, some (like me) just preferred it over the US schools they got into, and some didn't even apply to US schools because they wanted to go abroad. Maybe not the smartest choice financially for them, but to each their own. Also, though our earning potential is still low here in the US compared to MDs/medics, we still make a lot more than UK vets comparatively (which is one of the only reasons I didn't stay in the UK).

I found this analysis interesting. My first year as a veterinarian, I earned $36K (1994). I was fortunate that I only borrowed $15K for veterinary school and my wife convinced me of the importance of paying off the loan first (within a few years) before I began to spend it on other things. I also worked 3 yrs. as an Animal Health Technician II at UC Davis while a veterinary student which paid well above minimum wage. I could not imagine having the debt service that some students now carry at graduation. I think the last AVMA study I saw said the average student loan debt was now $125K. Unbelievable. Ross University graduates might be paying off their student loans in their 60s.
@DVMCellini
@DVMCellini 2 жыл бұрын
According to avma it’s $185k or so. That and below is juuuuust doable. The problem is the 50% of all vets that are higher. It’s just too much money once you get much higher than 200k.

Awesome video Dr. Cellini! I was wondering, how much surgery would you say you perform in a given week? I was wondering if the cases a neurologist sees are more internal medicine cases than neurosurgical or if its a good mix of the two. You did say one can choose to be busy and perform surgeries so then do most surgical cases get referred to a SA surgeon if you dont want to do them? My other question was, out of all the cases that you see how much require neurosurgical treatment??
@DVMCellini
@DVMCellini 3 жыл бұрын
Anywhere between 0-5 surgeries a week I'd say. Neuro (in vet med) is a mix of medicine and surgery. That's why I like it. You can be managing epilepsy one minute and doing spinal surgery the next minute. Great mix. And yeah if you're a medical neurologist you'd refer surgical cases to either a neurologist that does surgery or a surgeon.

My goal is to become an equine sports medicine veterinarian (not precisely sure how I’ll specialize within that (osteo surgery, etc) and if I’ll end up needing to do a residency, but it’s probably likely).The general consensus that I’ve heard from equine vets and others in the industry is that equine vets make less than small animal vets, and I was wondering if this would be the same for the interning/first few years out of college/residency stage? And if so, do you have any advice for me, as I am unfortunately pretty darn committed to equine medicine?

Jesus, that's insane. Second year vet student here in Australia. Normally domestic students would have to pay 295 000 for the full 5 year course, but if you're a citizen, the majority of the fees are covered by the government, which we don't have to pay back. So when I graduate, what I'll have to pay is ~65 000. The other 230 000 is paid by the government and I won't ever have to pay it back. Jesus, you guys in America really have it tough. I'm also thinking about specialising, but have absolutely no idea what yet. Definitely will have to wait for my clinical years before I decide. I want to go into wildlife, but I also know there's basically no money there so I will probably have to go do small, mixed or large animal beforehand so I can actually pay for my education.

Could you/have you made a video in medical vs surgical neurology? I realize it's a little niche. I'm a first year veterinary student and neurology is on my short list of specialities but I know I am not interested in surgery. I didn't realize that you could choose to practice medical-only. The loan burden of veterinary medicine is equal parts terrifying and unnerving to me. I'm ridiculously fortunate that I'm going to come out of vet school with very little debt (should be well under 30k) because of some very ...specific choices that I made (accruing no debt in undergrad, and doing a PhD along with my vet degree - can't necessarily call that a *smart* decision but it's good on the debt side), so I hope that will come out as more freedom on the other side since so much of my income won't go toward loan payments.

don't tunnel vision yourself, its too early. Your preferences may change. Medical neurology has by an large NOT advanced in 20+ years (apart from treating and managing MUO). This means for many it becomes boring, frustrating, and likely not as financially rewarding as other disciplines. Consider academia if you are really stuck on medical neurology...that is where you MIGHT be able to make the most change. Also consider ophthalmology...good income potential, low after hours demand, niche and very cool surgery, less 'death and dying' which some don't deal well with...good luck

so hypothetically, if one week/month you earn more than your base salary bc of production, you would get paid ~20-30% commission and net week/month revenues = yearly salary? also, from your experience, to what degree do you think it's true that vet specialists can make upwards of 10-20k cash per procedure in a private practice setting? many professionals say the most lucrative medical careers today are specialists in veterinary/dental medicine because of the lack of insurance reimbursement and potential practice scaling opportunities with a majority cash-based model? -also, your points about the lack of consideration in the space of inbreeding among various populations leading to adverse pathology is something that's not spoken about a lot, and great that you are passionate to speak up about it!

No one makes 10k-20k cash per procedure. Like, no one. At most it’s like 800-2000 depending on how involved it is. When you’re paid production you get either your base salary or how much you made in production, not both. It’s whichever is higher.

How do you think getting paid as a percentage of production affect vets' decisions on testing and treatment?
@DVMCellini
@DVMCellini 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it does frankly. There’s a self regulating culture within vet med that would keep that from happening. I’ve very, very rarely seen instances of unnecessary tests.

I can tell you as a veterinarian who just started making production for the first time that it has not affected my recommendations *at all*, I hate running unnecessary tests, but it has just made me much less miserable when I'm staying 2, 3, 4 hours past my shift doing paperwork because I feel like I'm actually being compensated for the extra time.

I am glad that India is a welfare state, you don't really have to pay anything for vet medicine ( literally 0) including Hostels N meal. Here, medical education is also almost free even in top colleges in the country. Though one has to come through a tough competition. Keep it up buddy , wish you all the best 🙏

Say nothing bad about Bulldogs. They will provide for us for years to come. Unless of course we are interested in animal wellfare. In this case Im not sure we can still be helped. We do spinal surgery very nearly every day, sometimes up to 3 a day and most of them are french Bulldogs. I make a point of thanking every French Bulldog owner for their breed selection. Most owners even understand what Im talking about but the reality is that every year we get mor Frenchies than ever. Kind of sad but there it is.

I have to add, from what I've heard, American vets get screwed. Of course it's practice-dependent, but compared to here it seems like you guys get worked harder and paid less, and the US loans system is an absolute abomination. The wage for a graduate vet here after tax (thus including loan repayments) is the equivalent of about $36,000. Vet work is never easy of course, but at many practices you are going to be woking a 40-ish hour week for that too, although you'll tend to be working 8am-7pm 4 days a week. The situation is worse at the corporates, who really seem to drive their vets into the ground with 60+ hour weeks; the independents are much better.

They need to be pay right, but the prices on the vet clinics is ridiculously high, one example my dog has a dental plan, he is already under anesthesia for the dental cleaning, its already on the plan and paid for it and they want me to charge extra $ 800.00 to remove 2 more tooth on a chihuahua and that happened every year , I bring my dogs, always during the cleaning they says my dog lost 2 tooth, which its normal but always they need to remove 2 more , $ 800.00 USDS is ridiculous hight.
