$6 k HKD sounds incredible. I have never heard of rent below $20k HKD for even studios

$6k will get you about 120-150 ft2 in an old building walk up with a wet shower. Lots of them around, but it's a tough way to live. You can't own a lot of stuff. It's a place for sleeping and shitting, not living.

He's not lying. I taught English in HK for over 10 years. I can't speak for Mr Bohemian, but most teachers also have private lessons on the side... anyway, I averaged around 80000HKD per month and even cracked the 100000HKD a couple of months per year, usually running summer camps. There is a hierarchy of salaries. At the bottom are the tutorial centres, then the local kindergartens, then the EDB NET scheme, then international schools. I know English teachers who were making 20000HKD and English teachers who were making more than 100000HKD... I didn't save much... I rented a village house and I have a wife and two kids... but I ran a BMW X5 and never had to think about money. Be aware that it's extremely easy to spend money in Hong Kong... for me, the number one extravagance was having a car and I could really only justify that with having kids and a dog... A car will set you back minimum 5000HKD per month... usually more parking/fuel/tax then you have maintenance, etc... For a family, you'll need minimum of 15000 for rent in the New Territories... the sky is the limit in Kowloon and HK island. We spent around 20000HKD on groceries and around 10000HKD eating out. School fees, a couple of o/seas holidays, entertainment and it's mostly gone... on average, we saved around 10000HKD per month. When we returned to Europe, we were able to buy a house, but there's no way on earth I could run a big BMW X5 now, lol...

Wow! You're living the good life. I teach in China, and I get about 25,000 CNY / 26,500HKD a month after taxes. With my housing stipend the rent for my 2-bedrrom apt. is $60 USD. However, I live in the sticks with nothing to do. I'd love to live and make bank in Hong Kong, but I'm assuming that for your job, you have a teaching license w/ a master's. I can't be bothered to put in the work and go back to school just to teach in Hong Kong. (Also, I'm 51 now. I'm guessing that the cut-off age for teaching there is about 60.)

Definitely a remarkable savings! I did the cram school teaching thing in Taiwan for twelve years with my wife. Together we were able to put away $20,000 (US) per year so that when we moved back to the States (Hawaii), we had a pretty good nest egg. We are now fully certified high school teachers (I teach English and psychology and my wife teaches Chinese), and I personally would love to break into the international schools teaching circuit, but unfortunately my wife is against. I don’t think she’s ever quite believed me when I’ve told her that in places like Hong Kong we could probably put close to 100K in the bank per year. Granted, Hawaii is a very hard place to live once you’re here. But the cost of living is very high.

Not sure of exact dimensions, but you can check past vids that showed the apt when I moved here. Yeah, I’m coming from San Francisco, where my rent was $900/mn. Most of my colleagues seem to be paying about double my rent here in HK. I guess it’s how you look for your spot. Expats sites vs local sites.

Dude. You’re either lying, or something is very wrong with your ability to count. Something doesn’t add up. You SAVED $325,000 HKD, which is overall more than some teachers even earn, but you only had $32,000 in your MPF. That means you were contributing $1300 a month, and your employer matching it. With MPF being 5% of your wage, that means you were on 26k a month. What am I missing 😂😂
@davetsang88
@davetsang88 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure I can explain for Mr. Bohemian, just my 2 cents. MPF is not a pure saving. Owners of the MPF accounts are required to invest the saving on some limited choices. In the past year, most investment options were having a bad time, and so the value of the MPF investment probably have lost a lot.

MPF is capped at $1,500 per month if the 5% exceeds that amount. Also, it's invested, so its value goes up and down like any investment, and in the past few years, due to COVID-19, it has gone down. Also, international school teachers earn HKD 40-70k per month, so it's your knowledge and math that doesn't add up.
