The problem I have is that the games are so big, that they are taking far too long to come out. I came from a time when I got a new Crash from 1996-1999. A new Spyro from 1998-2000. A new Jak from 2001, skip 2002, to 2005. A new Ratchet from 2002-2005. A new Uncharted bianually from 2007-2011, and a new Ratchet/Resistance alternating yearly from 2006-2013. Now, we have to wait 5 years between Horizons. 2-3 years between Spider-Mans. Almost a whole decade between Last of Us. It's too long and its not good. They need to go back to making them smaller, and getting them out faster.

They money went to the CEOs pockets. Today it’s easier than ever to make video games, too many AAA games these days worry about graphics and trends. Most of the budgets for game development goes into salary and marketing. I’m not going to forget the Suicide Squad team patting themselves on the back when the game released and some of the staff members being jealous of Palworld success and claims how hard game development is.

Marketing takes up a huge chunk of the budget. The fact that games take longer to develop now also increases development costs. It's not sustainable, and we're already seeing the downsides. This is part of the reason why companies incorporate anticonsumer practices into the games.

You might point the finger at the consumer if we’re being honest. Like you said in the beginning of the video, gamer’s expectations today are insane. Constantly critiquing a game before its launch is a norm. Flawless graphics and a well performing experience doesn’t impress anyone anymore. Developers and publishers struggle to decide what to prioritize because gamers are extremely inconsistent with what they want from games today. It’s a struggle to gage interest because there isn’t much that hasn’t been achieved in game design already. So in turn they chuck millions into the budget hoping it results in the most engaging experience possible when in fact it’s the lack of budget and tools that allows creators to truly be creative. Which then leads to an experience that may be limited in scope, but is sure as hell more fun and interesting than a bloated experience caused by a seemingly endless budget. Then again not everyone who consumes games appreciates smaller and more creative experiences so that’s not really where the profit lies.

I mean if you look for example at a game like Spider-man 2. Reports have said the game has sold over 10 million copies just from October to February. If you do the math $10 million copies x $70 dollars a copy thats $700,000,000 million dollars so If the cost of $300 million dollars if accurate then that means they turned a $400,000,000 dollar profit in less than 4 months. And there's no telling how many more copies they have sold since the last 2 months. Sometimes, especially on games like this, The budget might be worth it.

The cost of making videogames isn't sustainable in the long run unless they will be a change of mindset. Instead of making big open world games or live-service titles that rely on sales of content from years after the initial release, the focus should be on focused single player experiences that have tight gameplay, engaging narratives, and exciting visuals. Unfortunately, one of the biggest issues at the moment is the way microtransactions and keeping the players engaged through them brings in huge chunks of money. It is partially our fault that the gaming industry focuses now more on longevity and quantity of hours per dollar as opposed to the quality of their games.

I also want more of a focus on art styles and art direction over hyperrealism. I feel that the novelty wore off for me. It seems the uncanny valley is still as prominent as ever. I would rather the "realism" be put in things like animation, physics, and AI behavior. Playing No Rest for the Wicked now and aside from awful performance, it looks a lot better than most AAA games despite being stylized.

Same thing i've been saying for years as well. The budgets feel like they're artificially bumped up for no reason other than to make these dev studios pay more money to make their games. Alot of these games with those huge budgets don't even come across as games that were made on that kind of money. Who decides the prices for game development? Because it honestly feels like these developers are getting nickel and dimed very hard out of greed.

You didn’t say this jeremy, but i just saw some people mention how rockstar does the same things sometimes as the other devs do, and I know people like to harp on rockstar also releasing half a game technically because they drop the online like a month later. But at least they do it for a legitimate reason 😂 that “half the game” they dropped is like the most replayable open world game ever made. They want people to beat the story they spent like a decade on first and then you have the other half a month later. Completely different thing than some of these other games where even their full game isn’t even 25% of what GTA 5 single player is. Rockstar earned the right to do things like that and people be okay with it. These other devs want to have the success of rockstar and do what they did with GTA 5 but without earning the trust of the fans for decades first and without putting in the same effort and without releasing the same level of games over the years first. Everyone thinks they can just pump 200 mill into a game and it’s instantly going to be a hit. There’s games like Stardew Valley that 1 guy literally made all the assets by himself and it’s one of the most popular loved games on steam. Didn’t cost that much to make but i’m sure he’s made a good amount on it. My point being, game devs are too focused on the dollar than actually just making a good game first and foremost. There’s movies like ‘Buried’ where ryan reynolds is literally buried alive underground the entire movie. The movie cost almost nothing to make being as how theres no special effects or anything. 1 actor. 1 place where the movie takes place, nothing else. But it was actually pretty successful and showed you can make something amazing even while spending little to nothing. It’s all about the vision. Same way you see movies that cost a ridiculous amount to make and flop

Yes I agree, in my opinion most games are focused on cinematic experiences rather than an interactive one, and I believe naughty dogs uncharted is the reason why gaming isn't that expensive especially with unreal nowadays however actors set design locations music scores from an orchestra will most definitely bump a cost of any game back in the day the technology wasn't there to focus on cinematic experience only an interactive experience that's why fallout was so popular back then as well as Dark Souls. The cinematic experience has gotten so bad that sometimes it is virtually unplayable point and case final fantasy 16, while the game is pretty to look at you can see straight away money was spent on a cinematic experience buildings barely had any architecture to them it was just plain an dull compared to an online game like genshin impact which brings more of the fantasy charm that final fantasy is supposed to have. The number of cut scenes will infuriate anyone, let alone gamers. Even mission structures aren't interactive. they go here, go there, no real effort put in another example Mirrors Edge you actually understood faiths story the more missions you completed when running through building and on rooftops and solving puzzles there was always notes messages around giving an interactive story with a few cut scenes. Compared to Mirrors Edge catalyst, where you get a decent amount of cut scenes and virtually no interactive ones, there's no mystique to the game in the slightest. So yeah, gaming is definitely getting too expensive and spending it on the wrong things. In my opinion.
@Drstrange3000
@Drstrange3000 5 ай бұрын
The cinematic experience was also very prevalent in the GameCube/PS2 era. I remember playing a lot of games with elaborate cutscenes and well produced music and such. I think the difference was in that it could also balance it with great gameplay. One didn't necessarily overtake the other. I grew up with JRPG's and Point and Click adventure games of the 90's/early 2000's. It was always a thing. I do think the regression on interactivity and the advancement of gameplay definitely makes the modern games feel shallower though. One reason I like Nintendo is they still try some really new ideas despite not always landing. Their experiments can drastically change how we play games. I think that is kind of missing today with the 4K twins. They are both basically PC's.
@Dithunder

@Drstrange3000 That's a great point, and that's the problem today in gaming. The modes aren't interactive enough. Gameplay isn't rewarding enough. Honestly, it feels like a punishment nowadays. Sifu should have been really pushed because it went back to what games originally were interactive. Gameplay first and cinematic second.
@Drstrange3000
@Drstrange3000 5 ай бұрын
@@Dithunder It is great you mention Sifu as it was one of the games that made me want more for games as it has very focused, excellent level design, with lots of interactivity in both how you approach enemies and how objects and enemies react. Just something as simple as pushing another enemy towards someone on the stairs causes them both to fall down and constantly using the environments to your advantage. It had amazing cinematic quality while allowing the player a lot of control. It wasn't overly expensive either due to the expert art direction. Love it!

I think it’s bullshit, they’re just trying to get as much money as possible. I’ve played many VR games developed by one person or a small team that plays and looks amazing all while they cost $20-$30. AAA companies are just greedy, plain and simple.

He is wrong. The reason people beat new games or sequels fast is because people rush through games. I'm just talking about single-player games, though. Rise of the ronin came out late last month and I'm no where close to beating the game and I'm taking my sweet time and I'm only 19 hours in the game so he is wrong about that part.

you misunderstood what I meant. I'm talking the replayability of a game and how long it stays on your mind. Not how fast someone gets through it or how many hours it is

All this gaming is to expensive is by designed. Think of physical games. Everyone went digital by designed. Having you question whats the point of physical disk?🤔 now the attack is on console. Exclusive doesn't matter and games should be in the hands of all gamers not hidden behind a console. More money=more games. Even though console Exclusive pushes one another to be great. Full circle 🔵. Streaming is the end goal. Wake up folks. If games is to expensive. Games are everywhere. It then comes down to. Who can have the cheapest streaming services. Its by designed

if you're not making an MMORPG***** Why are you spending over a million? I think more than a few million is over kill for a single player. but 100 mil? that's uh... past the "9 figure".. when most are trash, you gotta question as a society if its worth it, definitely not.. the hits that weren't misses did something no one else did, there is some luck at the end of it all, like saints row and no street game will ever be like gta with how gta did things.. gta at least for me is starting to get lame now though, I'm not very excited for 6, I'm more excited to finish my own projects lol. and yeah the question remains, why spend over a million if they're not making a mmorpg? a mid ass game not worth the time or $, collecting dust in unfinished games or finished and question if it was worth it. they are sitting on billions though, square ubi capcom bethesda all them lil guys who getting bought out by bigger billionaires and trillionaires... WoW STILL got a garbage subscription even owned by microsoft, that shit needs to go, they'll realize how much their player base will increase and change their way of cleaning out bots. but seriously, I'll excuse 1-50 million for single player games for these billionaires that have so much money to burn in our fucked up economy. but i think 100+ mil projects that have online access as petty as the souls games or dragonball xenoverse (these are good games but they are not mmo is all I'm saying) why??? lol. it's not even amazing to see the budget numbers anymore. kinda is for gta 6 i guess but, they are playing more than a casino trying to hit a 1% at this point. i suggest if its 100 mil it must be a mmorpg i say that genre cause its the most expensive demanding and if that's your single player???? i don't believe something is genuine.

"why spend over a million if they're not making a mmorpg?" An MMORPG costs tens of millions of dollars to make to begin with. A game with high quality soundtrack and proper animations costs over a million to begin with, not even getting into gameplay

I think the issues people have with that game are more with presentation over graphics. Ghost of Tsushima was also not as graphically impressive as other Sony games at that time, but it was held up by its art design, animations, and fluid combat. It also cost a lot less than other big AAA titles. Not everyone values the same things in games. One thing someone overlooks, may be a dealbreaker for someone else.
