With M43, ISO will be a definite Achilles heel. But then you do have that wonderful 2x crop for more macro "magnification". New full frame sensors do surprisingly well still at over ISO12800, delivering keepers. I wonder whether this generalisation would hold water: a FF sensor is around four times the size of an M43 sensor, so it makes sense that it would allow for 4 more stops of ISO.

Great video thanks for sharing . I use the OM1 and 90 mm macro most of the time and without a flash you can get some great results :)

Agree. I also use the 300mm with 1.4 TC for bees, mining bees, nomads, wasps, bee flies, butterflys, long horn beetles, scorpion flies, lace wings, dragonflies etc. I have the function button on the lens set to focus bracketing. I love the 90mm macro but you have to get so close you often scare the subject away.

@@youphototube I am finding I have to back off a bit with the 90mm after decades of FF Canon which I sold everything the OM1 is my first 4/3s camera and it`s quite a learning curve but an enjoyable one . Especially the light weight the 60 mm macro is a jewel of a lense compared to the 100mm canon macro lenses so light and small :) .

@@jimwilson542 I have the 60 and the 90 and the working distance is good especially with the 1.4TC on the 90. Sharpness is still excellent. I've had the Olympus 300mm F4 and 1.4TC (840mm equivalent) since 2017. With a close focus of 1.2m it is an excellent telephoto for insect photography and super sharp. Fantastic for bird photography. I also have Nikon full frame and the new Nikon 600mm PF prime. I would say that the Olympus 300mm, many years old, is as sharp as my new Nikon 600mm costing a list price of £5000. I would recommend anyone into macro who has an OM-1 or EM-1 mk 2 to get the 300mm it opens up a whole new world. Like catching a bee Woolf wasp in flight clutching a bee to stack her burrow. My best butterfly and bee shots are with the 300mm. Enjoy the OM-1 fantastic for macro, birds in flight and the best pre-capture in raw on the market.

@@youphototube Thats great to know about the 1.4 tc on the 90 I have been thinking of getting one for it . The reason I sold all my canon gear to heavy to carry around all day . I am just debating to go and buy the OM1 mk 2 all the reviews keep saying the AF is improved , and keep the OM1 mk 1 as a second body and hopefully when the firmware update arrives for it the AF will be much improved on that . I do miss a long lense for birds etc one day I might get another but for now the macro kit and a pair of binoculars are much easier to carry around :) .

I used to be terrified of upping ISO. But that's because I started at the beginning of the Digital Camera revolution in the mid 00's and yeah, I see why when using my 20D on 2024 why I trained myself to fear ISO. But now? On my Sony A7 IV I can go easily to 3200 with out a worry and even 6400 and its not at all close to the noise of the past. So SO SO SO SO many photo shoots over the decades I ruined shooting at ISO 100.

I just read your comment after making mine. Seems like we had a similar experience. It is camera dependent, but I don't worry about ISO anymore. I shoot manual with auto ISO, the ISO can do what it likes. I want the shot and sharp so controlling the shutter speed and apperture is what matters to me.

So true. After a long time, I'm now finally shooting mostly in Manual, with my ISO sitting at Auto bounded at around 25600 (except when using flash, of course). What a liberation. But this is full frame. As Stewart said: do your own measurements and see where your creative freedom allows you to go.

I bought a Oly camera to do macro. I shoot canon but it does not allow you to use flash with the electronic shutter when doing focus bracketing. So there are to terms in the Oly universe. Focus stacking (which the camera makes all the decisions and a final 1 image from many. And Focus bracketing which you take many pictures then send them to a program like Helicon Focus or Photoshop, and the program puts all the images together. Now it was my understanding to use the bracketing with flash you have to have a native oly lens and flash to do this. How are you using the Godox flash. I would like to focus stack using Helicon focus but I want the camera to take a series of high speed shot using the flash. The canon camera will do this super fast without the flash but my understanding the Oly wish do this super fast (electronic shutter) and use a flash. How does that work and do you have to have a Olympus flash?

The focus bracketing in olympus does require a compatable lens, mostly Olympus lenses. the Godox flash work with the camera out the box with no issues.

Thank you for this video, I have similar experiences. The Iso behavior of the OM-1 is a bit better. However, did you check the batteries of your flash? Godox flashed do not work properly and cannot be set when the battery is low. Know this behavior from my Godox flashes.

It's the dial that broken on the flash so I'll have to get a new one.

ISO was my nemesis for years. Taking advice that to get good photos, the ISO must be low, native. Now, for most of my photographs, I shoot manual with auto ISO. Controling the shutter speed to freeze the action and aperture for DOF for look is a must. This is certainly best for bird/wildelife photography and street. For landscape and focus bracketing with flash I go full manual. Get to know your ISO and how important it is to your photography and how to deal with high ISO is great advice.

what^s about external trigger? like X2T with flash hot shoe on it?
@IAmR1ch

This is what I was going to say. It says group channel on the godox flash. Make it a wireless remote flash. Depending on the trigger, you could use your phone app to make the changes on the flash.
