Good info. Did a borehole at our new property at the beginning of the year and this is what I learned and what it cost. Also got quotes from three places. The one company had drill packages that includes the drilling and the casing pipe only. The other two companies quote drilling per meter and casing pipe per meter. Two of the three companies also charged a setup fee. I went for the company that charged 320 per meter for drilling and 600 per meter for casing and no setup fee. I checked references of this company and all were very good. I then did some research in the area and asked people in the area that do have existing boreholes what is the depth and yield of the holes. This will give a good estimate of the expected depth that you will require (Important this is just an estimate) Drilling started and solid rock was reached at 21 meters so 21 meters of casing were installed = R12 600 First water hit at 25 meters More water at 35 and then 40 meters. Driller said this is strong water but I asked to drill another 5 meters to create more space in the hole (a sump) Total depth 45 meters = R14 400 The drilling took about 5 hours to complete. The drilling in total cost R 27000. Here is the hidden costs: All the drill cuttings needs to be removed and cleaned. I did this myself but you require help and a trailer to remove it. (Worst part about drilling) Pump installation: This is an area where consumers need to be very careful. There is people that does pump installations and take advantage of people and their lack of knowledge regarding boreholes. They will tell you they first need to pump the hole dry to establish the yield and what pump is required. R 2500 for this. Secondly they will tell you, you need a 1.1kw pump and this will cost R18 000 including the installation. Don't fall for this crap. If you want to use the borehole for domestic purposes then check your average monthly consumption. In my case we used about 2000 liters per day with irrigation. So I expected to get at most 3000 liters in a 24 hour period from my borehole. I bought a .55kw borehole pump kit that include all you need to do the installation excluding the pipe. This pump is suited for a hole of 55 meters. (As you go deeper you will require a stronger pump. Good place to buy pumps and get good information is at places like Obaro or NWK) This cost me R4800 and I did the installation myself. I already had a 2500 liter tank and pressure pump so I connected the borehole to this tank and automate the filling by means of a smart pump controller and float switch. The pump controller provides protection should the hole run dry or an electrical issue occur. The controller and float switch cost R2500. Also had to buy a manhole cover and did the construction. Cost about R2000. Keep the following in mind: Borehole water is not always clean water. You need to have the water tested if you want to use it domestically and completely go "off grid" from municipal supply. We were lucky and unlucky. The water is clean in terms of no bacteria and safe for human consumption but its not visually clean. Lots of sand and mud in the water so water is very discolored. The water is also hard which is not good for pipes, taps and geysers as it will cause severe corrosion and/or scale build up. This required a water softener system and water filtration. Additional costs: Water test = R650 50 liter vertical filter filled with activated glass media (Pre filter on the borehole line before entering the tank) = R6000 Big blue three stage filter system (Post tank filter before entering water softener) = R2400 50liter water softener system = R9000 Fittings, valves and pipe for installing filters and softener = R4000 This filter and softener combo cleans and softens the water to the point that the water is clear and no corrosion or scale build up occurs. Note: I did this installation myself. A quote for this filters and softener combo including installation came to R32000. Be careful as again companies take advantage of people and they will install oversized valves and other items that brings the cost up. The labor rates are also insanely high. So in total my borehole cost me: Drilling = R27 000 Borehole Pump incl manhole construction = R9300 Water test = R650 Filters = R17 400 All fittings required for installation = R4000 Total = R58 350 Again this does not include any labor as all the installation work was done by myself. So yeah take these additional items into account. Each borehole is unique and will have different hidden costs. Make sure you shop around when considering a borehole and check online references before making a decision. Also remember a borehole is like a living thing that requires care and maintenance. No company will tell you this. With a tank system use a valve at the inlet to the tank to throttle the borehole pump. My tank will take about 4hours to fill from empty as it pumps at about 10 liters a minute (2500 liter). The pump at the depth can pump 50 liters a minute but the borehole cant produce that much and if the pump runs open it will run the hole dry. This is not good for the hole as it will start washing the hole out. This can lead to rocks dislodging and then sealing the hole off and you will end up drilling a new hole. Secondly I add about a quarter packet of pool "shock it" every 6 months to sanities the hole. As said borehole water is not always clean and algae and other coliform growths can form inside the hole. This will keep it clean. That is my learnings and tips. Is the borehole worth it. 100% yes. No more worries about water outages and no more municipal bill for water usage.

Very controversial subject and one that there is no clear answer to.... I have retired now and have worked in the ground water industry for over 40 years..... So here is my 5c worth - ! - Borehole drilling and completion can only be done as an estimate not as a quote... No one can predict conditions under ground and what will be involved... My advice - Find driller tht has drilled and knows your area well... Ask for references etc from the driller - you are about to spend a lot of money... 2 - Yield testing - This is absolutely vital if this will be a primary source of water.... Most lending banks will insist on it,,,, 3 - Water tests - If there is any likely hood of using the water for domesic consumption it has to be tested.... 3 - Pumps and installation - This is a mine field as there is no qualification to become a pump installer... This is the tragic part of the industry.... Contact a couple of the major pump suppliers and ask who their approved contractors are and work from there.... Conclusion - The ground water industry is and has been plagued by unethical and downright criminal contractors for years due to the amount of money involved.... My best advice is find out from friends and neighbors who they used and what their experience was... Best of luck.... PS - I have some videos on drilling on the tube on my site - @Clive Dredge

Good information. But like other people said get the water tested if you haven’t done so. Your garden doesn’t like hard water. Also washing your car with unfiltered borehole water is not a good idea. For our lodge we have a sand/carbon filter and a water softener. About 10 years ago we paid R 100000 for the complete system. A few years back we build a new house and decided to go for rain water instead of a borehole. 25000 L storage and a sand/carbon filter with a uv light to kill the germs. Nice soft drinking water from all taps at our house.

@xireninsights4 ай бұрын
I think it can be able to supply a large number. You’ll just need a bigger tank maybe from 10000L and a pump that’s able to pump water quickly from underground to the tank plus a pressure booster so that the water going to the households can have sufficient pressure. But I’m sure people dealing with industrial boreholes can give better advice.

That’s very affordable. How long ago was that and which province? My parents’ borehole costed around that price, 25m but that was 20 years ago.

Not to mention the fact that you're in SA so they can easily tell you they drilled 100m while it was only 50m.

Speak for your GP/L/MP/NW town SA is too big to use experience of an individual or a handful. Im in the western region of the EC and i dont hear horror stories. You cant see when they take the measurements or verify that yourself? Smh.

Borehole water is healthy than tap water from municipal
@xireninsights4 ай бұрын
I agree. Municipal water is chlorinated and the state of some water reserves where it’s pumped from is very dirty 😅

You can't just give a cost of a borehole!! It depends on the land and if you are higher or lower land..this is my bread and butter,we do most of the boreholes in jhb
@xireninsights4 ай бұрын
I’m giving my cost (my personal experience) obviously it will differ with another person’s experience. Have you done a video on social media to market your services?
