I would like to go back to Latvia to visit. I am from the US but my grandparents on my mothers side were from Latvia. My grandmother (I called her Omamma) took me to Latvia in 1995. I am sure things are waaaaay different there now.
@WeAreHarvestingdreams6 жыл бұрын
Yes Omamma sounds very Latvian. 😄 you should definitely come visit again, all the things that have changed have changed for good. Also I advise to visit in summer as it’s most fun in summers 🙂

there is no way you can rent an apartment for 200 unless its 50 min. from center and in soviet era bilding (not a pleasant place to be). Rent in OK place STARTS from 300. I don`t see how it is posible to eat for 5 euros per day either.

I rented a 2 bedroom flat for 265€, 40 minutes from city centre in a soviet building, but the flat was actually really nice.

@WeAreHarvestingdreams6 жыл бұрын
Hi! It always depends on how much your family spends but I believe that 1500€ should be enough!
@TotalRookie_LV6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! IMO me and my wife make less than that together, maybe around 1050-1200 euros netto a month. One advantage is - we don't pay rent, only expenses, as I own a flat (didn't buy it, of course, got it privatised after Latvia regained independence). We just don't spend much, even save a little.

It can be very hard to find a job in Riga without Latvian or atleast russian language. While not expensive compared to other countries, it would be incredibly hard to start living in Riga from scratch without knowing the language. With the language it's actually pretty easy to find a good paid job. Local fastfood restaurants can earn you about 800 euros a month full time. (-31% taxes and other crap, and you end up with about 500 on hand.) With a little support from maybe your parents its actualy quite easy.

How many people in latvia speak english? Could I move there without speaking latvian and be able to communicate still? Also what kind of jobs could an american get there
@WeAreHarvestingdreams4 жыл бұрын
I would say that the younger generations understand and speak English better, but you could find it rather complicated to communicate as older generations do not understand or speak English. To get a job in Latvia you should know Latvian very well as well as some russian language. I would say English would be the third and the least used language in Latvia. Hope this helps 👍
