Talking so much sense. 👍 I used to take loads of stuff with me and then I took a girlfriend for a week in France on my K1200GT, we agreed that we’d have one pannier each, so about 40ltrs each. We managed perfectly well and had a great time. Thanks for posting these great vlogs, informative and thought provoking. 👍

It's experience, all experience, and the method you suggest. Nobody can tell you what to pack because nobody knows *you* that well, and what you want. For me, I generally ride, set up camp for a couple days and ride unladen around that area, tear down camp and ride home. That way I can bring more camp supplies/bigger tent/etc. however, if I'm riding say, a BDR and setting up/tearing down a camp daily and always riding fully laden, the camp comfort is less important and bike weight/comfort laden is much more important. Thus, everyone has to figure out what works best for them and their trip. That said, I totally agree that "fashion" (if you will) has been getting out of hand, and people are often criticizing based on how well they match current adventure fashion vs. how well they are set up for exactly what they want. For sure, less is more generally, but there's no need to mock - people will figure out what works for them quickly enough. Hell, I've actually mailed home *whole bags* mid trip in the past!

We have a camp up north. I use plastic blue barrels to store pans and kitchen utensils. With a huge home made grill/smoker and outdoor kitchen. I take too many guns because moose, lion, bear, and wolves. I strap my rucksack to the pillion seat on my Buell. Side hard cases hold tent and clothes. The rear hard case is just food. And that works for wife and I. And she don't have to carry anything on her sportster.

I travel and camp a lot all year round. I prefer to pitch up somewhere for two or three nights and while I am established there I want to be as comfortable as possible. I want to enjoy my time away and I want to sleep well and be ready for a day on the bike or perhaps a day walking in the mountains. I do not do a triage after every trip, I have my basic equipment which even if I didn’t use it last time is staying on the list. I know exactly how much space that equipment takes up and where it gets stored on my motorcycle. Basically my panniers, roll bag and small tank bag will be full leaving only my top box to fill with the things that I believe will enhance my next trip. Last trip the final space was filled by my drone. It’s not that big but is to me a luxury. It’s also light which is an important criteria for the top box space. I only used it once to take a handful of photos but those photos made it well worth the space. To make space for the drone I took out a few handy snacks but that didn’t matter, things like those are available just about anywhere. Each of us is different and each of us will take what we believe is best, videos like yours can be interesting but at the end of the day I’m not sure they’re going to influence people or change anybody’s best practise.

It's the noisey minority drowning out the larger, quieter majority. As far as luggage? I found you need at least 3 trips before you learn how much to take. It's called experience. However, according to many riders of the modern ADV bikes and their multitude of added furniture all has to be filled apparently.

Always thought provoking. I probably move in different circles because I haven't come across this kind of criticism. Surely there are hundreds of different variables as you point out but surely the important thing is the how or what, only that you do. Does the two wheel fellowship end end with "Adventure Riders" ? Just asking.

There is a middle ground in the States, I am a member of it. It’s actually quite large. The rub of it is, we are not loud, don’t whine, and generally keep to ourselves. Consequently the media outlets, driven by the spectacle imperative, pay no attention to us. It is easier to sell ads when you report about the wing-nuts. Good vid by the way. I often over pack on my rides. I like to carry lots of tools and spares, since I tour on a bike approaching 40 years old. Curiously, I’m confident carrying less on my 52 year old bike on long trips. The older bike is simpler and there is less to go wrong.

Thanks for your insightful comment Phil. I'm pleased to hear there is a middle ground in the States. The reasonable majority, no doubt.

It’s people afraid, polarized by hysterias rallied by political group, industries and their driven influencers making most people followers of one or the other simplifying approach, as all people are driven to immediate feeding and expectations. Noone is going for learning by experience, thinking and trying/planning. I have my setup and need no piling. Even when i change bike and travel mode. Experienced over 35 years of travel.
