What's going on guys!
This is a very highly requested video and I'm happy to share with you how much software engineers really make in 2020. This answer can be quite arbitrary with a lot of factors that effect salaries at different companies based on size, competition, speciality and most importantly location. I hope this video helps and answers your questions.
The tech industry is really fun you should join me!
Thanks for watching this video, and as always God bless :)

Salary potential also has to do with what type of job you take. In my area, contracting dev jobs are becoming more and more common but they definitely pay a ton more. I’m currently making $52 an hour as a React and React Native dev. There was also another 6 month contract near by for $65 an hour. Granted, contracting isn’t for everyone as you never really stay in one place for too long, but you gain a ton of exposure to many different companies and technologies while making pretty decent money. I even know contractors that work only 8 months out of the year because they make all of the money they care to make in that amount of time and then take the rest of the year off. So keep that in mind, full time positions aren’t the only ones out there.

I worked in silicon valley as a electrical engineer and it was crazy expensive to live...I airbnb a 1story...3 bed room... that price tag was 1.2 million dollars. It was rare to hear that people out there owned there own house and didn't have like 5 people living with them. I must say silicon valley is extremely dope for anyone who loves tech and want to be around others who love tech and have the mindset to be a CEO or a legit inventor. People out there take young tech people very serious. And its alot of open events at every tech company out there.

I feel like my TC for the job I'm getting post-graduation is pretty good for an entry-level and for the area I'll be in. Medium COL places from my observation seem to be pretty great (for now at least) because they pay maybe 10-15k less than they do in high COL areas but the rent, food, transportation and almost anything else is much much cheaper to the point that it more than makes up for that loss of base salary.

What I've done is starting learning the basics of coding SQL, Python, Java, ect.... and about to finish up a Business Analyst Cert. Since i have the mortgage business back ground and understand software development and know how to operate as a BA, I'm told that this should increased my income to over 105k base, as an BA consultant.

Well as someone who just got into this field, here’s my experience: If you’re entry level with 0 experience, no internships, and live somewhere the cost of living isn’t crazy like CA or NY then you can expect to make between 60-70k assuming you’re not an IVY league prodigy but rather the average CS student getting a degree.

Samuel N very true
@mastermnd
@mastermnd 4 жыл бұрын
So in reality, Popular Stacks command lower salaries because the supply is much higher. Lots of Full Stack Engineers know Node/React or Python/Django so its easier to find talent. The median salary for node is ~112K, but the median salary for lets say a Go developer is around ~135K
@pinkdiscomosh2766

mastermnd this is very true and is exact reason why I’m picking up alternate languages on the side. For now though, React and React Native are paying my bills so I’m always keep up with those but when they start to fade in salary potential, it’ll be high time to move to something else.

People making cross continental comparisons like this (not taking in account currency value among everything else) is crazy to me. Those $500 a month would better scale to about $4000-$6500 a month depending on the "African" country in question.
@mo6248
@mo6248 4 жыл бұрын
@@tbg6070 It's 100% true, but in some technology fields like software engineering and CS, it's different, the cost of the software and data analysis almost be internationally the same depending on features. due to this, they leave their countries for a better chance abroad. The equipment prices (i mean the personal hardware) wont be covered by a local currency, they work for some selfish companies witch making hundred of thousands per year or even millions (by dollars) and they just give them some crumbs. by the way, two of my doctors leaved the country just in this year. Ay bro as somebody who’s a senior at lmu and who started in mechanical engineering did that for 2 years and then realized nahhh and went to computer science and love it, the fields of study are very very different although they both require math and critical thinking. I’d say take an ap comp sci class in high school and see how you like it. Comp sci looked like basic programmming and data structures and algorithms in java at the beginning and then went to learning c and assembly and ui design and databases you learn graphics, which is mostly linear algebra, and operating systems which is basically the. Ins and outs of the mechanisms that control operating systems all the way to building your own language and launching an app. Mech engineering looks more like physics and math, differential equations and thermodynamics and fluids and vibrations. And at the end you design something from beginning to end, test it and display it. It’s completely different and tbh bro just do what you like that’s what matters not what you think you should do because of other people cause when you’re in industry the only thing that matters is what you’re happiest doing.

Justin Wiggins I appreciate that, Yeah I got unlucky and got put in ap environmental science instead of computer science. And b4 I tried to learn python language in the 8th grade so yeah ofc , this the route I’m planning to take . Plan on taking the ap class my Senior year next year then take it again for my bachelors in college . I love mechanical engineering but like u said , I’ll be more interested in software engineering. Hopefully u make it far with cs, feel free to type again later on about how you got yo first job.

tyrone smith yeah I heard a lot about the difficulties on learning about mechanical engineering and mostly trying to get a good job right after . I’ll be more interested in software engineering where I learn about computer science , since I can take those courses the next 5 years (once in senior year hs and then doing cs in college). Hopefully all goes well for you 🙌🏽thanks again

When I was your age, I preferred culture over pay. Now, it’s money over culture lol. I would like to retire at 65 and a higher paying job where I could save more money, set more aside in my 401K, savings acct, play around with the stock market. Yea its more money for me.

If Base salary around $200k in Google include Base salary+Benefits+Bonuses-stock etc for a Fresh Grad student then what is the 20+ years of experienced Senior SWE salary at Google lol ? $1M+ ? And these salaries are reachable for 80+% of the SWE workers or these numbers are for the top 5-10% ?
@liam1902
@liam1902 Жыл бұрын
No, base salary for entry-level SWE position at Google is not on average $200k. For entry-level at Google, it's on average $110-$150k base salary + RSUs over 4 years + bonus so maybe about $200k compensation per year if you divide everything equally (or more depending on experience, COL, and specific area of interest at Google aka Web dev, Mobile dev, ML/AI, etc). The higher level you go as a SWE at Google is $160k-$300k base salary + all RSUs + bonus. However, only a small and very selective people end up getting promoted to Senior, Staff, Senior Staff SWE. Majority of the SWEs at Google stay as just Software Engineer in the first 2 levels. Senior Staff SWE probably makes an estimated $700k compensation per year but they will probably have 20+ years of experience and only a very few people make it there (esp to Staff, Senior Staff, Principal, etc).

I think many "IT" folks like to call themselves engineers which is why the nation average is so low.. The actual average is 120k for a senior dev...
@girlanonymous
@girlanonymous 2 жыл бұрын
They don’t “call” themselves engineers. It’s what the job title is. If you look at the core curriculum of a computer science or computer engineering degree which a vast majority of Software ENGINEERS I know have, they all took engineer and math courses all throughout college. Software engineer is an accurate title imo.

Salary starts low but grows fairly quickly in growing tech markets. Moved to Denver to work for a defense contractor right after graduating in 2016 starting at 70k. in the 3 1/2 years i was with them salary went to 97k. Just got a job with amazon here in Denver with a base salary of 160k. So if you play your cards right and continue to develop your skills the money is out there. But i will say the work/life balance and benefits are worse at amazon than at my previous employer.
