After Andy Murray won the US Open, you could hear him saying to his players box "where's the watch" and then you see him wearing it at the trophy ceremony and it is especially highlighted when he is holding up the trophy. Just think that after winning his first slam, he was thinking about a watch.

Tennis is awesome and difficult to play at multiple levels. I enjoyed the very real and honest video from you. It shows how deep the talent is on the various levels of pro tennis. This is also why for every junior player that could be good enough to become a pro there is a player/family that cannot afford it. Your hitting footage also highlights how good you are. Thanks for sharing.

A refreshingly open and honest analysis of money in tennis and in sport in general, thx. It's such a shame that so much of the money is concentrated only at the very top of the sport. Don't even think about what you'd be earning if you were the 450th best football or basketball player in the world! You got to follow your heart though. Keep the vids coming, we and Felix are really enjoying them and each one is getting better than the last.

Excellent video, Evan! Now I'm ready for the Spanish version since Yo recuerdo cuando naciste en Torreon, Mexico:) If you have time, I'd love to hear your insight on the relationship between country of origin and success in professional tennis. For example, how has Russia managed to produce so many successful pro players? Do those players tend to come from wealthy families that can help overcome the financial hardships you've described before they crack the top 200? Does being Welsh/American hurt or help you? Could you actually compete for Mexico in the Davis Cup or Olympics? I know some players have done this in the past. What are the pro's and con's of such a move? It seems that Osaka, for example, didn't really get the full backing of the U.S. earlier in her career, which is why she trained in Japan (so I've heard, perhaps this is incorrect). Just a suggestion. I know you have lots to offer. Wishing you luck when the tour resumes...

I would like to tactfully note that the people who pay for Ronaldo's salary also have merchandising for most of what he wears, while tennis players would have that put under merchandising. The economics for team sports is radically different to that of sports like tennis and golf, where there are both more people per side and vastly more teams competing at the top level (most leagues have more than eight teams in them, which is more than the number of players reaching the quarter-finals). This means that relatively few players could earn most of the money in these sports, while team sports would have more teams getting an even amount of home-team support as well as distributing the money to a dozen or more people. I'm hardly an expert, but I think this could be a major factor.

Let alone the endorsements, one big problem in tennis is the exponential distribution of the prize money, which leaves crumbs to the first round losers and gives 80%+ of the cake to the first four. In my opinion the prize money should be awarded in two ways, i.e., most of it should be distributed according to an arithmetic progression (namely, each win awards more or less the same money) and only part of it should rise exponentially. For example, suppose there is a tournament with 32 players and (more or less) $1,000,000 prize money. Let's say that 90% is distributed arithmetically and 10% geometrically. Since there are 31 matches altogether, and there is a budget of about $900,000 for the arithmetic part, each game awards $30,000 to the players (15,000) each. Then the remaining 100,000 are distributed, say as follows: 30,000 to the winner, 15,000 the finalist, 7000 the 1/2 finalists, 5,000 the 14/finalists and 3,000 to the 1/8 finalists. The final prize would be something like this round of 32 15,000 round of 16 33,000 QF 53,000 SF 75,000 finalist 105,000 winner 150,000 (10x the 1st round loser) Let us compare this to, say, Montecarlo prize scheme in which we keep the ratios that were applied (2019). Assume we still give 15000 to the losers of round of 16, but then progress as in Montecarlo 2019. We would get: round of 32 15,000 round of 16 28,642 QF 57,172 SF 110,930 finalist 216,267 winner 427,251 (28x the 1st round loser) . But this way the total prize money would be about 1,560,000 so we have to rescale since we only have 1,000,000 and we get roughly the following final prize money distribution round of 32 10,000 round of 16 20,000 QF 40,000 SF 76,000 finalist 147,000 winner 291,000 We see that with the exception of the semifinalists, most people get screwed while 2 people are happier. In order for more people to be able to enter this type of tournaments and therefore get their share of the cake, something should be done for the rankings. One extreme solution would be to abolish them altogether and replace them with "titles" such as grand master, IM, master, etc in chess, or black belt, brown belt, etc in karate. Basically, there are a handful (5 or so) of grand masters (such as Nadal), then there is another 20 or so *very good* players, and then another layer of perhaps 50, but then, from around 90th ATP ranked to 300 or even 400 they are basically equivalent, more or less indistinguishable as far as their technical ability. Some of them have been luckier than others in getting the ATP points that allowed them to play in good tournaments, but they have all worked pretty much similarly hard. Tournaments could be organized so as to have players from "XXX-belt" up, but then any of the players who have the level to enroll could play. There should only be a limitation to the maximum number of tournaments in which one can enroll each year.

Stupid are tennis tournaments.they only give 12-14 percent of there revenue in prize money ,that's stupid .most sportd league give 45-50 percent of their revenue.even golf PGA tour give 30 percent of their revenue even though maintaining golf course is way harder than maintaining tennis courts

With the student loan crisis in the USA increasing at an exponential rate, pursuing a degree seems like a more feasible option financially. If you’re good enough at the age of 17-18 to even entertain the idea of going pro then I can guarantee you can get a full scholarship to a 4-year university.

But... the manager's cut? The agent's percentage? Before or after taxes? ---on bad deals, that would make the star pay their entourage's taxes... Then there's the entourage/team---coach, accountant, lawyer, ball boy, housekeeper ... And expenses, travel, rackets, club memberships... Would you agree that a 15 % net, after taxes and expenses is usually a good guestimate of a star's take?
@rishbahpandey86973 жыл бұрын
No its easily more than that , around 50 percent.tournament nowaday easily give all facilities to players ,only cost maybe coach and some travel expenses that's it
@udishomer58522 жыл бұрын
players ranked 150 or below don't have managers, agents, full time coaches or ball boys etc. As you go up the ranking your expenses go up as well. But still the top 100 take home a nice chunk of money.

That’s capitalism. I do think some of that endorsement money should be used to support travel, lodging and training centers for all tennis players. Maybe private jets for the top 50. First class commercial for 51 to 100. Business for 101 to 150.. Then coach for the rest. The same for lodging ect.
