good video dude. standard camera op rates.. 550-750 standard. don't take any less. that's just to operate.. not your camera rental.. not your hotel, nothing..they should travel you, put you up, and expect you to do nothing but operate for those rates. 550-700$ 11.5 hr day with 30 min lunch

i worked as a camera operator filming live concerts through a union and it's not much money at all. no benefits you're responsible for your own taxes and the work wasn't consistent. You would have to have at least 20-25 years on the job in order to see real money. that's why you see mostly older cam operators in the business

My father hung up his job and retired as a senior soundo here in Australia for the ABC, the industry is going to shit and he was disturbed at how streaming services were eroding conditions in the industry with that churn and burn model. He stayed on entrenched and mates of his went and free lanced, some did well for themselves but he said the way it is going now, the soundos are going the way of the dodo and they are getting the camera men to do that job too... He said it was never going to be as good as having one man on the camera and one with the recorder. Anyways he said now the pay is shite for a very long time, where as previously it was comfortable and grew to have him earning over 130k+ a year. Long hours mind you but a dam comfortable income. He would never free lance because he said as you said, the work was inconsistent, you have zero sick leave, paid rec leave, it is cut throat for going to tender for work and you had to try and keep up with the ever changing technological advances in the industry. You need to pick your work carefully for your portfolio as well as a flop production will not look good with your name to it..... What a nightmare. I ended up doing an apprenticeship as a light vehicle Volkswagen mechanic to have under my belt and now earn 6 figures driving Semi Trailers at night. I am glad I did not follow down the path of film and tv because it doesn't go anywhere pay wise till as you mentioned you are considered senior which is usually a few decades... You have to be really into it and have a passion to keep that flame alive and even then it would challenge that passion when the bills come and the work dries up. Mad respect for doing it mate, much like my apprenticeship which paid shit money, I am glad I did it for the experience but glad to be out of it.

Hello Sir, I would like to become a camera operator and I'll be going to film school instead of entering the industry as a PA. I understand I will most likely start as a PA after college. I was just wondering about the legality behind how you get paid as a camera operator; do you need a an LLC to operate or is it as simple as being hired for a short period and receiving a taxed pay check.

You don't need an LLC. Production companies can pay you as an individual. So you're just a contractor working for them. Sometimes it'll be taxed or it'll be non taxed and you'll owe later.
