Great video! If anybody wants to be a PA, you got to really want to take care of patients. It can’t be about the money because There are a lot of other ways to make good money that are easier, less stressful, and less debt. I made 130k as CT travel Tech in 2022 (have no debt) and the crazy part is only about 56k of that was taxable from the hourly wage. The rest was from the tax free stipend. As a Pa, the entire paycheck is taxable. Pa is a great career but you are selling your time to make decent money in the long run.

I'm confused by your math. I'm a Nurse Practitioner paid hourly, and I make $80/hr. At 40hrs per week, that comes out to $166,400/yearly (Gross income). Is the $128,000/yearly income you mentioned your take-home pay (Net income)?
@keldendelvecchio6932
@keldendelvecchio6932 Жыл бұрын
Your math is right for working 40 hours a week. In the ER we don’t work a regular 40 hour week. We usually do about 11-12 12 hour shifts a month which puts us at our contract hours. We sign a contract for 1,600 hours/year which is about 133 hours a month. And the agreed salary is $128,000/year. So $128,000 divided by 1600 hours is $80/hr. And then any overtime worked is just the hourly rate at $80/hr.

@@keldendelvecchio6932 I work ER too, in Texas. We do 12hr. shifts also. I typically average about 11-13 shifts per month, so I actually work about 36hrs. per week. But you're way underpaid brother! Get a year experience and get out of there.
@J.Davila_NP
@J.Davila_NP Жыл бұрын
That doesn't include overtime pay or our quarterly bonuses! I'll actually be closer to $190k, this year all together (Gross pay). I hate how ER's take advantage of new grad PA's and NP's. Hopefully you can get some good experience and get the heck out of there man. Good Luck.

Is it hard to get admitted to PA program? What do you think of online PA schools?
@keldendelvecchio6932
@keldendelvecchio6932 10 ай бұрын
I would say it is pretty competitive. It is definitely attainable though. You just have to look up the requirements and try to exceed the minimum. My program was mainly online due to COVID. We were in person for a portion of didactic. I would say you will definitely benefit more from in person for clinical skills. I’m not sure if online programs like Yale have in person opportunities for clinical skills or how they go about that. I would have to look more into it.

Hi @Kelden, I am enjoying you're videos! Mind giving me insight what is a realistic number of patients per hour as a new grad starting out in EM?
@keldendelvecchio6932
@keldendelvecchio6932 10 ай бұрын
Hey 👋🏻 great question. I would say it depends on which hospital you work at and if you only see fast track type patients or if you also see more critical patients as well as how high/low the census is usually at the hospital. My hospital has been having a lower census so we have been cut down to 8 and 9 hour shifts. I also just hit my year mark in the ER, so with that I would say for the past several months I have been averaging anywhere from 13-17 patients in a 8 or 9 hour shift. And those are a mix of higher acuity complaints and fast track complaints. If I were to only see fast track patients I could see way more. I don’t know exactly when the title of new grad goes away haha but my first 2 -3 months I would say I was probably seeing under 10 in a 12 hour shift because I was still getting used to the EMR and charting and learning where everything was and I was also asking a ton of questions and running every single patient by someone more senior than me. I still run patients by docs and other PA’s/NPs to get some input here and there and I still ask questions everyday. Hope this helps!

Have you shadowed any PAs to see if that’s something you would want to do? Also, to take into consideration - I’m making pretty much the exact median of what PAs make so you might make more or you might make less. I would do some research into what specialty you would want to do and the area you want to live in to get a ballpark idea of what you would be making.
@mjfreespirit
@mjfreespirit Жыл бұрын
@@keldendelvecchio6932 I have not done any shadowing. I guess the other consideration is I work 70+hours a week to make that 4k. I'm really interested in specializing becoming a psychiatric physician assistant. My research led me to get my bachelor's in Psychology, while adding on the required course work for PA School. The plan would be dual licensure as an LMHC/PA-C. Then after I graduate as a PA-C, going back and getting my PsyD. Haven't found many resources that would support this path. I could just try to get into med school and do psychiatry, but I'm not sure i would get enough counseling/medication balance as a provider. Certainly I'd have to focus on becoming a PA-C first then go back to school to get a second masters in counseling. Then work towards my PsyD. I'd love to work in a State Psychiatric Hospital.
@keldendelvecchio6932
@keldendelvecchio6932 Жыл бұрын
@@mjfreespirit if you are that passionate and set on working in psychiatry and that’s ALL you would want to do I would recommend just going to med school and pursue becoming a psychiatrist instead of trying to get multiple degrees. You would be spending probably close in student loans to get these different degrees and it would also probably take the same amount of time to just bite the bullet and go to med school.
@mjfreespirit
@mjfreespirit Жыл бұрын
@@keldendelvecchio6932 Thank you. I will give psychiatry a try. I was just figuring as a PA i could get to working sooner and making money than the psychiatrist track
@keldendelvecchio6932
@keldendelvecchio6932 Жыл бұрын
@@mjfreespirit you definitely would be working a lot sooner, but you don’t want to work that hard to become a PA and have second thoughts on if you should’ve went to med school. I think becoming a PA is really attractive because you aren’t locked into a certain speciality. That’s why I said if psychiatry is all you would want to do then that perk of being a PA wouldn’t apply to you. I would recommend trying to shadow people in the field before making any big life altering decisions so you can see what it’s like and pick that person’s brain to get all of your questions answered so there is no doubt in the decision you end up making!

@keldendelvecchio6932
@keldendelvecchio6932 Жыл бұрын
I’m sure PAs get paid more in Sacramento, Ca than where I live. The cost of living is comparatively low where I’m at currently. Also, travel nurses where I’m at are getting paid like $150/hr because there is such a shortage. (I don’t really think that is going to last forever, if so they will definitely need to also bump up the APPs rate) So, cost of living and supply & demand are big things to take into consideration. Are the nurses where you live working a lot of overtime or is their hourly rate just higher? I would also be curious to know what exactly PAs are making in Sacramento, Ca!
