Hey, I played your game a few days ago and I must say, it was one of the best video game experiences I've had this year. I'm really looking forward to your next game! :)

Hey Chris! Awesome job making your game and getting it out there. I’m working on a game myself called Elimination. I’m a solo dev with a full time family and job, working in Unity and been working and pivoting the game since summer 2020. I’m hoping next year or so I’ll be able to publish my game. Can I ask you this question: how long would you think is a good time to have everything done before publishing? Of course you don’t want to finish the final build and then publish the next minute, so that you can use time to QA the game and plan a proper launch.

I released Fantasy Survivors end of April this year. I love the game so much I released 93 updates since then! It's a mix of Vampire Survivors and Diablo and I keep adding more features to it. My to-do list is huge! When I'm not working on the game I take breaks by playing with people that just bought the game. Full development time to date is around 1 year 3 months.

Great video, and respect for the full transparency!! The contents should be quite useful for aspiring indie devs. Due to market over-saturation and other factors, indie game development feels insanely high-risk nowadays (definitely more-so than 5-10 years ago)! I don't know how we're supposed to survive, haha Anyway, I'm working on a weird action game called BURGER IMPACT (currently Early Access on Steam), check it out if you're interested.

Players are always looking for games that are similar to the ones the already have. Just make your game stand out a little and they will notice it. Enjoying your own game seems to be the key since you will be putting in extra effort and time without growing tired of it.

It really depends on the game and the scope. I always think if you have something playable get people to play it early on and get feedback. If you game is feature complete, bug tested, and people are enjoying it that is good time to release it. Also, get your steam page up ASAP if you have enough material to show on it@@jimkurth

Thank you for making this video, it’s really insightful and for a first release your sales so far seem good! I wish you all the best in the future! In response to the pinned comment: I’m a freelance game composer, for almost 9 years now. It’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done, but I’ve also been creating pixel art, animation and learning how to develop games for over a decade, and I’m finally feeling brave enough to make my own game!

I would say that is pretty successful! Congratulations man. I know it may not have been the ideal, but no one tells you how much goes into this process. I am currently working on getting my steam page setup and starting some marketing and its just a ton to balance all at once. Not to mention trying to work fast enough to get into the Next Fest. A couple grand doing something you enjoy is pretty awesome!

I've been working solo on a game for roughly half a year now, I am very close to finishing and I expect to release in the next 3 or so months. I have a degree in 3D asset creation and have enough saved for just this one project. For me this video is kind of a massive downer. I knew I would never make much money, even enough to fully live off, but I was super hoping I'd make enough to buy a really good game dev workstation to allow me to continue to make games and grow a legacy. I don't expect to do better than you so I don't think it'll happen anymore :( but still will try n see.
@chrisdanelon7 ай бұрын
I think you should release your game later and start marketing your game for at least 6 months to a year before releasing it.

Gamedev shouldn't be for profit anyways, if you become millionaire by doing it then Congrats! if not then you're enjoying the process. That's what the mentality must be :) Thanks for the information

One important tip you forgot is to have a shorter turn around, 5 years is a long time to make a video game, I understand it was a passion proyect but you cant spend 5 years on every game you make, you need to make games with shorter gamedevelopment time if you wanna make it full time as a solo dev. There are developers out there who make shorter games but release them often. And make a living, these developers are often also are the one with an audience, see people like Puppet combo.
@chrisdanelon3 ай бұрын
Yes, 5 years is long but it was my first game and at the start I didn't know much about making games and by then end I know much more about game dev. Also consider that shorter games that can be beat in less than 2 hours are more likely to be returned and have to sell for a lower cost per unit. My next game will be out in way less time than 5 years of dev but it will still have high quality and a good amount of gameplay for a fair price.

Price is too low, should be $20
@chrisdanelon3 ай бұрын
It was my first major title and I wanted the price to be competitive as well which is why I landed on that price.
