@@alisonhowton5506 well study shows it does get old. Most people who live in one area stop going to those things. I know MANY people that live in Florida even on the coast that rarely if ever go to the beach anymore. There's a reason why people from the south want to go north a d north want to go south. We as humans as we age want some form of change. The majority of people like travel and different experiences. Everything after a while gets old. Doesn't mean it ever gets boring to everyone it just gets old and most people want something new. You can be happy anywhere . You could also be unhappy anywhere , including Hawaii. Being broke and poor and working till you're 70 or dead would suck. There is no middle class in Hawaii. the reason that is higher on Hawaii is because we are in the middle of the seas and every thing is shipped in so this produces a self fulfilling prophecy. there is only one company that ship between Islands there no fairies and you have to fly between islands. It is not like being in the mainland. Lanai are higher because they get a shipment once a week. His price is about what I go threw in a month. people who come here and look for work have it rough. Here in Waipahu the streets are hard to get around because there so many cars parked on them, many times there is extended family living in the house to maybe three generations. On Oahu there a lot of condos going up but they are in the upper price range. There is a move to get as much land in to growing food. Lanai is mostly empty land because they do not grow the pineapples there like the did in times past. You noticed that he did not talk about the price of houses, they are hard to find. I hope that this fills in some.

As a 62 year resident of Hawaii, I can tell you that what he is saying (at around the 13 minute mark) about having a reserve fund is CRITICAL. If you're planning to move here, make sure you have at least a low five figure savings account. This will be your emergency fund, and set a condition that when it drops down to half, time to go back. The lure of "paradise" is a powerful thing, but it can very quickly become a trap from which you can't escape. Be smart. Bide your time, save your money, line up employment and housing BEFORE you get on the plane, and have a concrete escape plan!

you need a vehicle on Maui :)! Unless you want to hitchhike everywhere which many people do... and... unless you just want to and are happy to stay in that area where you live... Just to give a real example - public transportation - from where I live - takes me 15 min. to drive with a car, to get to the closest bus station... that would be - 1 hr or more walk... :)... it is also where the closest store is... that's like half a day trip just to grocery store without vehicle :)... Not to discard the info you gave because your other info is pretty spot on and applies to Maui too :)...

Houses with all the rooms rented out are extremely common on Oahu. $700-$1000 can get a decent room with utilities included. $900 for a moped to get around really don't think it's as expensive as some people think it is (or at least doesn't need to be.)
@robertcharles96045 жыл бұрын
Quite accurate with majority of points covered. Depending on the type of work you will be doing a car is critical on most islands. If you can work near where you live and are single then you can get away with moped, bike, bus, etc. A vehicle on island is usually the life blood of improving your job status, place of residence, touring, moving, etc. You can find cheap vehicles on island but recommend paying reputable mechanic to go over it for major problems (automatic transmission and head gaskets issues) . One thing not mentioned was the difference of living at sea level as opposed to upcountry. There are pros and cons to both locations but typically the higher elevations come with a cost.

This could be a problem if you work in retail but it is also everywhere in the US, unless you have a degree, otherwise, you are pretty much screw anywhere you live. I always though that Hawaii was skyrock expensive but in New York, rents go for around 2gs in decent areas, Chicago the same way. I pay almost 300 to keep my small home warm during winter time, wish it could be up to 9 months and electrical bill goes for around 100, we pay for a lot of stupid taxes in Illinois. Thanks for your candid review of Hawaii. I grew up in Honolulu, but left as a teen. Have visited some of the other islands but for me the Big Island is like the idyllic “Old Hawaii” - but is slowly changing. For the young, if you can find an honest means of support then why not go for it? For the elder near retirement like me then other factors come into play, like Healthcare costs and insurance although Hawaii is considered a tax friendly state for retirees.
