Here is a simple yet accurate test as to whether or not you will enjoy living in Hawaii: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." If you understand that old saying, and can apply it to your daily life, you will do fine here. If you don't understand it, or won't apply it, your life here will be a struggle. Simple as that.

Don't know if you have covered this in other videos but one important thing to consider is the availability and quality of medical care. Queens on Oahu is pretty good. But you can be caught in bad way on other islands, and are forced to head to Oahu for any (good)serious care. It is a much better place for the healthy young to middle age as far as that goes. I want to stress this especially for the Big Island and Kauai. The vog also really affects some people acutely.

I'm often astounded by the cavalier attitude many people seem to have about moving to Hawaii. Even as a local my upcoming move to Oahu from the Big Island would not be possible if I didn't have housing secured and family support and connections in Oahu. When I hear about people selling everything and moving to Hawaii I get the image of a boy from a coal town or a farm girl from Kansas arriving in LA with just a dream and the clothes on their back.
@rcamacho667 жыл бұрын
Thanks for being honest, I believe that if someone wants to move to the Big Island they have to be well informed and prepared, it is what it is. Keeping the dream alive, thanks.

Good discussion. SUMMARY negatives: hostile locals, very expensive!!, poor food, not intellectual, homelessness suffering, black mold and bugs, lack of diversity of nature/birds/animals, indigenous resentment of billionaires (THIS is justified!), cut off from rest of the world, road rage, slow pace of life. I wonder how the medical facilities and hospitals are?
@joqiii34 жыл бұрын
Jill S Doctors are good, but there is a SEVERE shortage of doctors state wide. The outer islands are the worse and in many instances those folks must come to Oahu for care. The doctors I have, in my estimation are fantastic. All are caring with great educations--even Ivy League educations. If you live in Honolulu, toward town, everything, all the doctors are all within 15 minutes of my place. However, the place is EXTREMELY expensive, it is common to have 15 people, or more, live in one house with two or three bedrooms. But, as far as healthcare, it’s very good.

I grew up on oahu 45 years. Being White "haole" was no fun. Racial discrimination is in your face all the time. Cost of living is high on every level. Anything not hidden or locked up in your yard will get stolen. Car broken into is all too common. Drug addicts and homelessness people are everywhere and in your face. Slow heavy traffic everywhere. Drug and booze party culture is everpresent. I had 2 homes robbed, 3 cars and 2 motorcycles stolen over the years. Yeah...clean air, warm ocean, good surf, beautiful jungle and landscape, nice fruit and vegetables, great variety of foods and restaurants, laid back culture, beautiful smelling flowers everywhere. It is a fishbowl environment and everything becomes a rerun after a while. You must adapt to slow traffic, slow progress, low expectations of quality outcome, breaking infrastructure, cockroaches, spiders, centipedes, fire ants, mosquitos, many bugs. Health insurance, car insurance, home insurance, DMV fees, gas, electric, water...all the usual cost of living costs are very high. Lower your expectations of a quality outcome or timely outcome in all aspects of business or relying on services rendered.

That is not what "Brain Drain" means. It was because a lot of people that got degrees from UH went to the mainland instead of staying on Hawaii, because there were no jobs in Hawaii in the tech industry.For somebody living in Hawaii, you really should learn a lot more when speaking on subjects. There are many different type of Hawaiian Sovereignty. There are some people that want every non-Hawaiian out of Hawaii, there are some that want the American government to just acknowledge them, there are some that just want to have the Hawaiian Monarchy back, etc. That's why they can't get one movement together.Facebook man wasn't suing kamaaina, he was suing kanaka maoli, which is totally different.

I am born and raised in Hawaii. If one knows the old Hawaii and compares it to today, Hawaii is NOT paradise. It’s extremely expensive. There’s a lot of homeless. There’s drugs on our streets. To sum it up, Hawaii is not far away from the LA skid row. There is a lot of racist, stereotyping, and judgement going on. The local people are getting pushed out. This is Hawaii, yet there is barely any Hawaiian culture or the mixed culture Hawaii was once known for. Everywhere is nothing but Asian culture, Asian foods which all have that sodium flavor. You can walk into any business and notice 50% - 100% of employees are of Asian decent. All local people including our local elderly people are homeless while foreign Asians occupy the senior housing. Walmart on Keamoku Street employs 100% Filipinos. I am not being racist it’s a fact that people in Hawaii don’t wanna admit to. I am saving to get out of here. I have been to a lot of mainland states and have never seen anything like what I am experiencing in Hawaii right now. I lived in Colorado, it’s beautiful and the people are nice. Texas, Arizona, New Mexico just to name a few states I was treated with respect. Here in Hawaii the Asians look down on Me and stereotype Me. I was recently accused of being the cause of the homeless people sleeping in the garage of where I just moved into a week ago. A group of Asians told the property management company that ever since My son and I moved in to the building, homeless people are coming around. How ignorant is that accusation?! There’s homeless all over Hawaii’s streets, and I highly doubt it’s my families fault.

Marco Island , Florida is beautiful. The Flora is the same as Hawaii. The weather is not too far different other than the summer is brutal but the winter and fall and spring are gorgeous. The streets are clean, very safe, not a whole lot of rifraf like many other Florida beaches. the neighborhood on the island is littered with tropical homes and flora. The beaches are great. Alot of residence ive talked too that live on Marco Island say it's a mini Maui because Marco island and Maui have alot in common. Plus you're only an 2.5 hours drive to key largo and the Florida keys.

The nature is beautiful, but many of the locals are butt lazy, on the dole, and live with mom and pop instead of moving away to where they can make a decent living.
