@@sheilalamothe9936 yep yep! I also only use wood in the winter. It takes about 6 cords for a normal winter cut and split by me. Unfortunately my side hustle is breeding and selling tropical fish. My 50 aquariums will need to be emptied and dry docked for a while. Next move is enough solar to run a fridge, freezer and a couple lights and fans. Once achieved they can keep their electricity..the rate hikes are unjustified and basically insane.. We grow all our veggies and are settling up a 14x38' run for our 8 chickens. They will be spoiled.

Going through this myself and trying desperately to keep working the huge garden we have. So, my SHTF is here and will likely continue. My garden was a bust this year nothing grew well and we got very little out of it compared to 2 years ago. We are trying to shop sales and stretch the food as far as we are able to keep the bills paid . But then we always lived a frugal life. I don't know how people are doing it. Thankfully my farm is paid off. I have a car payment and a tractor payment. I'm scraping by. I'm trying to sell off my goat herd to cut back on livestock feed. I'm not going out to eat nor am I traveling. Things I used to do on a weekly basis. I'm working my farm. Keeping my nose to the grindstone. My bills are going up even though I'm cutting costs everywhere. I nearly passed out when my electric bill came last week. It was DOUBLE of what I normally pay. I have a small business that is struggling, and I'm looking at having to raise my prices AGAIN due to costs going up. When do I price myself out of business???? I'm physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. I'm ready to lose my sh++ on the people who want to vote for Kamala or those that think everything is fine. Thanks for letting me vent. Hang in there, I had a meltdown last week, it's so frustrating trying to tell people what's going on and they still act like everything's fine. I just got overwhelmed, with trying to keep up with everything, and on top of that, I sprained my ankle really bad, so now I'm hobbling around trying to do what I can do. I've got a big garden, animals, trying to can, freeze, dehydrate, etc. I totally get it, and then having what's going on in the world to think about, it is mentally draining. Yes, chicken feed here keeps going up, I feel like the only stuff I buy is food, animal feed, and things to put food up with, like vacuum seal bags, food processors, etc. canning jars and lids, etc. Meanwhile, everyone else is taking trips to Hawaii, the beach, this and that, and I'm at home working working working. And guess who they'll try to come to when the poo really hits the fan? Yep. I hear ya. We all need to vent at some point.

We went pier fishing over the weekend. 8 of us. With 8 coolers. We all caught striped bass, croaker, sea trout and a few flounder. Have to fill up that freezer while we can, with fish. Making fish stock next from the bones etc... and canning it. I now understand why so many people are dumpster diving. The prices on food and the WASTE of the food they throw out to the landfills. They should be composting it. Animals died, what waste of a life, and to be thrown away in the dumpster, that is a sin.

Well, we aren't rich and I reckon, prior to the pandemic we would now be considered middle class, but no longer. We were making it on under $2k a month. On Soc. Sec. Survivor's Benefits and SSDI. The house was falling apart because of all of the hurricanes and a tornado. We finally saved enough to fix it and by that time, it was considered too far gone. But, when the pandemic hit, I was already prepped to some extent, but I went into overdrive. That cut our costs. Hubby finally got his VA Benefits with a little backpayment. We counted the costs for removing the old mobile, renting while putting in a new one and a new well because we were getting saltwater intrusion, and a new septic. We decided to move and sell the place "as is". We moved 3 hrs away. We bought a used truck and a new trailer and took our time. It about did us in, but we got it done and our new place was used but cheaper than a new singlewide. We ended up with 2,000 sq ft. Thank the Lord! I actually have a full pantry! Prices were continuing to rise so I kept stocking up. I'm loaded on beans, rice, pasta, grain, etc. I stocked up on canned hams, corned beef and tuna and corned beef hash. So, we are still eating on stuff we bought three years ago. I bought 40 lbs instant mashed potatoes and 25 lbs. Dry peas and 10 lbs of cheddar powder and approx. 50 boxes of pasta. For dry canning. Just bought boneless pork sirloin @$2.49 a lb. Canned the jars a little on the light side. 32 pints. Got 10 lbs of chicken @ $0.78 a lb. Gotta can that. Last winter, I found out that Dollar General had leftover canning jars stacked on the top of the rows and they were way cheaper than walmart. I went to every store in my area and bought almost every case they had. I'm not as energetic as I used to be. I bought barbecue sauce on sale and recanned it in jelly jars. It's just the two of us and we don't eat as much as we did when we were younger. I did the same with jugs of salsa. I got commercial sized cans of spaghetti sauce. There's 5 pints to a can. I rarely buy anything unless it's on sale these days. Stocking back up on sugar because prices go up in November. Stocking up on instant coffee because coffee is imported. We go out to eat once a month sometimes. We don't go crazy on soda and snacks. We don't have credit cards or even watch TV. We don't rent movies. We buy pizza at Aldi's or I make it. We live simple lives.

I have started eating frugal oatmeal for some of my breakfasts and frugal home cooked brown rice and lentil meals for some lunches or dinners. Yes, I can afford to have more expensive meals each day, but oats, rice, and lentils make up a lot of my long-term food storage. At some point, it may become too expensive to eat the way I prefer, or there could be food shortages if the supply chain is disrupted. So, I decided to get used to eating more cheaply like I would have to do if I had to rely upon my long-term food storage. Today at my favorite grocery store I saw that a #10 can of Augason Farms freeze-dried diced beef was priced at $107 per can. The last time I put this product in my food storage, I paid around $68 from Amazon. Thank goodness I bought most of my freeze-dried animal protein years ago. I really do not know how people with moderate incomes but who make too much to qualify for public assistance food programs are going to survive if food prices keep rising. So few people today know how to do vegetable gardening or have the land or the time to grow some of their own food. I have heard that just a few major international corporations own most of the food processing plants in the U.S. and a lot of the agricultural land in the U.S. I have to suspect that a near monopoly, if this is true, is some of the reason behind the increase in food prices.

We need to go into full 80's mode with peanut butter and Jelly served with Kool-Aid. Biscuits and Gravy. Stews and chowders. Beans and cornbread. Well, yes this is our situation and we all know that it will get much much worse before it ever gets better, as desparate governments do desparate things (expect your property taxes to triple)....research what the US Gov did to farmers who owned their land outright (no mortgage) during the Great Depression. So, that being said, what are we to do, as we are all just tiny little cogs on the big wheel with a miniscule chance of changing the big picture. Folks re-examine your life today. You are going to have to make some uncomfortable changes if you are to survive. If you don't there's a 99% chance you become homeless. MD you may have to take your mother in, depending on her living situation. Multi generational living arrangements are now a necessity. Consider taking in vetted roommates. Cut your number of vehicles down. Quit buying any and all processed foods. You really have to rethink everything you are doing, and don't wait for it to get worse. Take action now instead of being reactive later.

I honestly don't see how people are making it. I really don't. I went from buying all organic everything to having to be very, very selective about it. Because my son had a very serious reaction to just the DTaP and rotavirus vaccines at 2 months, I'm so glad I didn't let them talk me into more and I still feel bad about the two I allowed, my husband and I purged all the chemicals to try to give him his best chance. I still prioritize as much of his food as possible being as clean as possible. I can't afford to maintain that standard for me. Gas is not a problem only because we're at home most of the time. I also cut my own meals and that helps the grocery bill. My neighbors had paid their house off and they've taken out a new loan and refinanced it. They're probably gonna lose that house eventually. We homeschool and I spent almost $500 last night on science and spelling. The milk I buy has gone up $2.00 and it's only sold by the liter. If it gets much worse people are gonna have to steal to get by. My property taxes have quadrupled. My home owners insurance has more than doubled. Hey, I'm gonna suggest something to you to get your property devalued. Go grab a black friend. We know and if y'all are good friends it won't cause offense. Our homes are routinely undervalued if they come out and see it's a black family living there. This is one time that can actually be helpful. If you have a black friend that you can talk into bringing pictures over and staging the house like they're your brother or sister and you had an emergency to deal with but they're there to make sure your assessment can be done, it'll almost certainly drop 10-20%. I can't do that because I put up a pool in the back without asking but you haven't done anything you don't want anybody asking about. And listen, don't let this bother you. If we can use sorry policies to be a help to each other, we should. There's a reason blacks who can leave all black communities do so it's not entirely without cause. It's worth a shot.

Just park some old broken down vehicles on your front lawn. Plan B is to relocated to a rural area zoned for agraculture, No taxes on land that is in farm use. You can always just grow hay and find a farmer to cut & bale it.

I think home ownership is one of their primary targets. The last thing the state wants is for the citizen to actually own something. They want dependency and obedience. They want total control. And they are "your" government.

My daughter just bought me my probably last Moreno Wool jacket and I bought good sneakers, usually $95 reg. for $35 on e.o.s. clearance. Thrilled. Got jacket large enough to wear 30 y/o wool sweaters under. Was cheaper than a new winter coat (needed) and more versatile. Just need a good pair of jeans. Else, I don't usually get rid of much, just store away until size or style comes back. Not that it matters anymore. But she helps me as much as she can. Physically also. I actually owe her about 15,000 plus for the last 15 yrs. I can't say she's the best out of 3, they all have their own ways. But, without her I'm not sure where I would be. I'm watching how I say things because ~ 3 yrs ago I said something to my grandson and got injured and have aged ~ 5 yrs and just starting to get around better. So, am I thankful for what I have left for now, you betcha! Getting teary eyed. Bye.

I make decent money at my regular job, basically double what the operators do. I still work multiple side gigs and run our family farm where we raise and grow some of our meat and veggies and sell some of our produce and honey, but my wife was laid off 2 weeks ago and it is getting tough. My biggest expense is Government theft and medical insurance which is still Government theft. We will manage but I am tired of the theft and at this point We are a huge tender pile waiting for that spark and there is a fool running a grinder and welder with a cigarette dumping gasoline everywhere in Washington D.C..

"My biggest expense is Government theft and medical insurance " I ditched the Obamacare insurance: too F king high. have a non-compliant plan. Usually when i go in for minor issues, I just tell them i don't have insurances and the bill is under $100. Not sure if this will work for you.

It’s kind of funny I got my house as it was being built for a steal at $169.9 cause no one wanted all bedrooms on the second floor because it seems here in Texas everyone wants the master downstairs. 🤷‍♀️ my gain! Problem is now they evaluated the house at $325,000. No upgrades. Seems like they just want their money.

OK if you can stand sharing a 12'x 8' room with 6 to 8 people. Prisons are overcrowded & likely to become much more overcrowded. You better off being homeless in my opinion. Plan B is to share an apartment or home with others contributing to the costs.

I'm a retired correctional officer. The thing that use to REALLY piss me off was when they got their food tray.... would look at it and start complaining about the food they were served. I recommend going back to work, as inflation is only going to get much worse. Sadly retire is over. Anyone that isn't retired will never be able to retire, most that are retired will have to go back to work. better to get job sooner than end up getting stuck in a low wage retail job working for min wage. I am in my late 50s & won't ever retire.

You think your savings & fixed income is going to last?!? You need to "get real", because inflation isn't going away, & its going to get much worse.

It pretty much sounds like from the comments. I had no idea that so many of us are in the same boats. I guess it just seems better out there because if I maybe stop at Lowes, I feel like I have the oldest vehicle there, a 2000 Heep, everything else looks new to me. It's the same all over, these vehicles look new, restaurants have full-up parking lots, same w/grocery stores. I can't figure it out.
